This paper takes a stance of metadiscourse analysis and explored the frequency and function of a metadiscourse device:it-clauses in academic papers of different disciplines.By analyzing and classifying the function of it-clauses,it identifies that variation does exist in academic papers in different disciplines as the nature of different discipline varies.It pinpoints that authors of different disciplines should take different strategies in applying meta-discourse to achieve communication,shared knowledge and acknowledgments with readers.
