Abstract

This paper concerns the newspaper distribution problem. It addresses the transportation of newspapers from printing plant to newsagents with distribution vehicles under various particular constraints. The objective is to minimize the distance traveled by the vehicles and/or the number of vehicles. In this study, the routes for vehicles of a leading newspaper distributor company in the Turkish press sector are examined. The problem is defined as determining optimal delivery routes for a fleet of homogeneous vehicles, starting and ending at the printing plant that is required to serve a number of geographically dispersed newsagents with known demands under capacity and time constraints, while minimizing the total distribution cost. An integar linear programming model is proposed as a solution using Cplex. Computational results demonstrate that the proposed model is fast and able to find optimal solutions for problem scenarios with up to 55 newsagents within reasonable computing times. It was found that the proposed model reduced the delivery cost by 21% on average when compared to the current manual method. The results show that this model is adequate for medium-sized distribution problems.  相似文献

Both the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) live, feed, and nest in the Mediterranean, mostly on the beaches of Turkey and Greece. The greatest threat to the survival of Caretta caretta has been found to be on the sandy beaches where their lives begin. In this study, the digital terrain model (DTM) of the Iztuzu Beach in Turkey where the Caretta caretta sea turtles lay their eggs was prepared using a global positioning system (GPS) and a geographic information system (GIS). A flexible coastal geographic information system was prepared integrating the DTM with digitally processed satellite images and ground truth of the nesting area and its surroundings. Researchers, decision makers, other end users, or sea turtle experts can find and query any environmental information having a possible impact on the nesting area using a computer-based GIS database. A multidate monitoring of the nesting area allows users to extract and compare much information about the location and condition of the nests and will help researchers develop better strategies for protecting sea turtles.  相似文献

Clustering is one of the major data mining methods to obtain a number of clues about how the physical properties of the water are distributed in a marine environment. It is a difficult problem, especially when we consider the task for spatial–temporal marine data. This study introduces a new clustering algorithm to discover regions that have similar physical seawater characteristics. In contrast to the existing density-based clustering algorithms, our algorithm has the ability of discovering clusters according to the nonspatial, spatial, and temporal values of the objects. Our algorithm also overcomes three drawbacks of existing clustering algorithms: problems in the identification of core objects, noise objects, and adjacent clusters. This paper also presents a spatial–temporal marine data warehouse system designed for storing and clustering physical data from Turkish seas. Special functions were developed for data integration, data conversion, querying, visualization, analysis, and management. User-friendly interfaces were also developed, allowing relatively inexperienced users to operate the system. As a case study, we show the spatial–temporal distributions of sea surface temperature, sea surface height residual, and significant wave height values in Turkish seas to demonstrate our algorithm.  相似文献
