This paper analyses the occupational future of the American merchant seaman. Reasons for the decline, foreign competition, technological change, effective manning and the feast or famine cycle are analysed. Strategies for the resurgence of the occupation are discussed.  相似文献

This paper examines the meaning of four common maritime and admiralty terms: found, cargo, ballast and voyage . These terms are problematic because their definitions are elastic which makes application of the terms difficult. The four terms are important because significant legal consequences are attached to each of them, particularly for seamen on flags of convenience (FOC) and crews of convenience (COC) vessels in US ports. The findings of the author are based on personal experience as well as research conducted in preparation as an expert witness in several maritime cases in both the US District Courts and in Louisiana State Courts, personal interviews with seamen on FOC/COC vessels, interviews with legal and economic experts on the international maritime industry and officials of national and international labour organizations.  相似文献

The major factors influencing tanker safety are discussed. For the discussion information has been gleaned from maritime labour officials, industry experts and a recent United States Coast Guard study on tanker safety. Results of other tanker safety studies and/or accident reports are also utilized. Some of the factors analysed are the size and age of vessel, licence qualifications for mates and engineers and manning levels. Other factors are those related to or attributed to flags of convenience and the pressure to maintain shipping schedules.  相似文献

Historically there have been only two groups involved in the conflict that has engulfed the US maritime industry for the past fifty years maritime labour unions and shipping companies. Estimation of trip tables and other matrices that are subject to constraints is a common practical problem. This note reviews four common estimation methods: (1) minimization of the sum of absolute deviations, (2) the biproportional technique, (3) information minimization and (4) constrained generalized least squares (CGLS) regression. A small example illustrates their application. Computational approaches and burdens as well as implicit error structure assumptions are reviewed. The paper concludes that estimates obtained from the biproportional, information minimization and CGLS regression (with a chi-square type error distribution assumption), are likely to be similar in practice. Choice of an appropriate technique depends upon a priori assumptions of error structures, relative computational burdens and the usefulness of estimate uncertainty measures.  相似文献

The marketing of ferry services has almost unique characteristics but little literature exists in this field. This paper is the result of a preliminary investigation, based on a series of interviews, into some current aspects of marketing on the Irish Sea. The study considers three services types: container; freight only; ro-ro and multi-purpose ro-ro.

The complementarity, or otherwise, of carrying passengers and freight together is debated, as is the organizational conflict or confusion that may arise from this type of operation. The need to adopt different marketing strategies in the freight and passenger markets is derived from consumers' different buying behaviours. The sometimes contentious relationship between product differentiation and market segmentation strategies is explored and definitions provided. Both market coverage and specialization strategies are found in the ro-ro industries and the more competitive segments are identified. Using 'purpose of travel' as the basis for segmentation, potential growth segments of the passenger market are identified. The marketing strategies employed by the freight industry are less apparent, although segmentation does seem to play a major role in the identification of target markets.

The study indicates the extent to which shipping companies on the Irish Sea have adopted the marketing concept and that scope still exists for them to make greater use of this fundamental business philosophy.  相似文献

This paper explores the influence of this occupation on alienation and social integration of its members. Data were collected using a survey instrument from a sample of 293 seamen, both officers and crew. Factors determining variance in levels of alienation are examined using multiple regression technique. Results indicate that variance in several occupational features of life at sea affect the degree of alienation experienced by seamen, and a number of social characteristics were found to mitigate these influences. Supplementary qualitative data are also used.  相似文献

In this paper we describe the shift in membership of the Marine Engineers' Beneficial Association (MEBA), the major us marine engneer labour union, and the problems asssociated with this change. The problematic nature of this change is examined by describing the changing membership of MEBA: demonstrating a relationship between the occupational socialzation of members prior to entering the union and their behaviour as members; and by explaining how the actions of MEBA led to the creation of the problem and the policy it implemented to alleviate the sitution. Data are gathared from participant observation, interviews with union officials and marine engineers. Implications for the formation of sentient groups are discussed.  相似文献

This paper examines what is becoming the new order of maritime shipping, the transnational corporation. By combining the flags of convenience with crews of convenience, these corporations have become entiitcs with an existence above and beyond the nation-state in which they operate. Factors contributing to and problems resulting from this maritime structure are discussed. Possible resons for scholarly neglect of this area in the U.S.A. are suggested.  相似文献

This paper explores the occupational and extra-occupational sources of job satisfaction in merchant seamen. Data were collected using a survey instrument from a sample of 302 seamen, both officers and crew. Factors determining variance in levels of job satisfaction are examined using a multiple regression technique. Several factors were found to have a significant impact on the degree of job satisfaction, particularly shipboard status and marital status. Collectively, the independent variables predicted over 63% of the variance.  相似文献
