After introduction of main compartments and operation condition of power drive type in suction hopper dredger, this paper presents its development history and the current application of electric propulsion, analyzes and compares the advantages and disadvantages of the technique characteristic of the three power drive types and makes modification scheme of electrical propulsion for ..several suction hopper dredge. We want to make it clear that is it really desirable for suction hopper dredger to apply the electrical propulsion.
