The methodology of hazard evaluation for hazardous chemica substances carried out by GESAMP and its application

This paper introduces the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection （GESAMP） and the methodology of hazard categorization for chemical substances carried by ships. It elaborates on the principles and basis of determining the rating for the chemical substances based on their impacts on the aquatic environment, human health and the use of coastal amenities. This paper also introduces how the evaluation results were applied in the development of the IMDG Code. The authors of this paper hope that it would provide a reference for those relevant in this field.
