Third party monitoring for the impact on environment by the shield boring of a subway transit tunnel

Shield boring of a metro tunnel through adverse geological section will cause disturbance to the ground,resulting in the deformation and settlements of the buildings in the vicinity,in particular,when shield driving traverses the water-stopping curtain walls of a pit under construction it may split the walls,endangering the safety of the pit and surrounding buildings.Consequently,monitoring should be exercised.The paper introduces the experience and understandings of the third party monitoring obtained in the practice of Guangzhou metro shield tunneling,which can be taken for reference by similar projects.
