Origin of Suburban Railways and Regional Express in Paris

The organization of transport in the Greater Paris region is a successful reference in the world of urban transportation. The main reason for its success lies in the sufficient supply of public transport where urban rail transit plays a crucial role, especially the coordination of regional express lines and suburban railways in single-center megacities or networked cities. This report introduces the conditions that pertains to the development of early suburban railway networks, as well as the conception and formation of the regional express rail in Paris. History shows that despite the different ideas and interests of the parties involved, an agreement was finally reached and the goal achieved. Considering the current situation of urbanization, and the great interest in urban rapid rail transit in China, this article hopes to serve as an authentic reference point for the development of urban-rapid rail transit that avoids detours.
