On Functions of Output Language in Second Language Learning

The purpose of this paper is to discuss three functions of output in second language learning. The first to be considered is the ＂noticing/triggering＂ function （or consciousness-raising function）. The second is the hypothesis-testing function. The third is the met-linguistic function. It is proposed that we may use the third function of output as the pedagogical means by which we can ensure that the other two functions operate. The paper gives new ideas of improving both communicative ability and linguistic knowledge in the classroom teaching.
