An Exploration into the Choice of the Right Type of Tunnel-Boring Machines（TBM）

As mountainous tunnels in our country increasingly get longer ahd longer,more and more tunnels as long as tens of kilometers are either being built or planned to be built. Since these tunnels are mostly deeply-buried, the arrangement of their branch shafts is Very difficult,and they are usually very demanding in environmental protection, more and more hard-rock tun- nel-boring machines （TBM） are used for the construction of them. The adaptability of TBM to the geological conditions is less than that of the boring-and-blasting method, but greater construction progress may be achieved with TBM in suitable geological conditions. TBM may be of the open type, the single-shield type or the dual-shield type. Different types of TBM have different characteristics while different projects have different requirements. Thus, the choice of the right type of TBM for a specific project should be made mainly upon the basis of a comprehensive analysis of the engineering geological and hydrologic conditions of the project, the design requirements of the tunnel, the requirements for construction progress, the forms of supporting and lining,etc. Only the perfect combination of a right type of TBM with the specific geological conditions can promote the smooth and successful progress of the construction of the tunnel project,achieving the targets of safety,good quality,construction duration and economic effects.
