Comprehensive transportation survey is an important instrument to discover urban transportation development patterns as well as to forecast future trends. Many international and domestic cities have es-tablished the mechanism of regularly conducting comprehensive traffic surveys. This paper firstly reviews the existing works of urban transportation surveys in United States, Japan, and China. Then, by learning Lessons from the 5th Beijing Comprehensive Transportation Survey, the paper summarizes the main find-ings in relation to the changes in travel demand and modes. Finally, the paper also proposes a couple of suggestions for the future research, including establishing a national-wide transportation survey regulation, revising survey data, and contending with the challenges from big data era.
