Based on the development trend of global ship products in the recent years,analyses of ship hull optimization,high-tech as well as high added-value cases are made to draw the conclusion that throughout the development of shipbuilding industry,design is the primary while building is the secondary;also that modern design is the high level integration of technology advancement and artistic creativity rather than the so-called design ideas in the common sense.For the shipbuilding industry,the key point of changing development approach is to return from ＂building＂ to ＂design＂;this idea can serve as a guidance and reference for the sustainable development of domestic shipbuilding industry.
