Considering the static stability and the change of the displacement volume, including the influences of higher order nonlinear terms and the instantaneous wave surface, the nonlinear coupled heave-pitch motion was established in stochastic waves. The responses of heave-pitch coupling motion for the Truss Spar platform were investigated. It was found that, when the characteristic frequency of a stochastic wave is close to the natural heave frequency, the large amplitude pitch motion is induced under the parametric-forced excitation, which is called the Mathieu instability. It was observed that the heave mode energy is transferred to pitch mode when the heave motion amplitude exceeds a certain extent. In addition, the probability of internal resonant heave-pitch motion is greatly reduced while the characteristic wave frequency is away from the natural heave frequency.

A reliability analysis was used to investigate the parametric instability of a top tensioned riser (TTR) operating under irregular sea conditions. In practical applications, the parametric instability evaluation of a riser is a very difficult task, owing to uncertainty of various parameters such as the environmental conditions of the load, the structural geometric parameters, and material properties. Considering the uncertainties of these parameters, it is vital to adopt a probabilistic approach in evaluating the instability. In this work, the Hill equation of a TTR operating under real sea conditions is first derived, and the corresponding stochastic external excitation is obtained using the Pierson–Moskowitz wave spectrum. The effects of various random variables on the parametric instability are studied by a sensitivity analysis. A surrogate model is used to construct the response surface for assessing the reliability of the parametric instability of the riser. The distribution regularity of parametrically unstable cases is examined using the contour of the parametrically excited responses. The effect of three significant uncertain factors on the probability of the parametric stability is investigated using the surrogate model. The proposed approach is demonstrated to be efficient for evaluating the reliability of the parametric instability of a TTR.

Time-varying coefficient vector autoregressive (T-VVAR) modeling with instantaneous responses is applied to spectrum analysis
based on the nonstationary motion data of ships. Because of the ship's maneuvers, changes such as course and speed, the ship
motions in waves are regarded as a nonstationary random process, although the seaway can be considered as a stationary stochastic
process. The T-VVAR model is transformed into a state space model, and the time-varying coefficients can be evaluated by using
the Kalman filter algorithm. Using the estimated time-varying coefficients, the instantaneous cross spectra of the ship motions
can be calculated at every moment. In order to examine the reliability of the proposed procedure, on-board tests were carried
out. Under stationary conditions, at a constant speed and course, the proposed method shows good agreement with stationary
vector autoregressive (SVAR) modeling analysis. Moreover, it is confirmed that the proposed method can estimate the instantaneous
cross spectra of the ship motions even under nonstationary conditions, showing that this is a powerful tool for on-line analysis
of the nonstationary motion data of ships.
