In 1982, a national survey of U.S. taxicab operators was conducted. This survey sought to assess the economic, operational and organizational status of the industry and to determine how these characteristics have been changing in response to rising costs and an economic recession. Two results of this survey are reported in this paper; the size structure and the organization of the industry. Both of these characteristics show that it has recently been undergoing two fundamental changes. These are the rapid switch away from employees as drivers to independent contractor drivers and decreasing average company size.  相似文献

In this study, passengers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for and willingness to accept (WTA) improved public transportation and shift to public transportation in Malaysia were examined. Specifically, this study aimed to determine the factors or transport attributes that affect passenger WTA and WTP to shift to public transportation. The adopted methodology was based on a contingent valuation (CV) survey, which was conducted on a representative sample of a cross section in residents of Kajang, in Malaysia. This CV primary survey elicited the demand of passengers for improved public transportation. The spike model was adopted to avoid estimation errors caused by a large percentage of respondents who were unwilling to pay and accept at all. The estimation results showed that the best reduction rate for both travel time and cost was 45% among other amounts that range from 15% to 75%. The best parking cost increment was US$0.30 and the average WTP is US$0.68.  相似文献

This study reports bus passengers' behavior and perceptions related to the use of potential features of an automatic vehicle location (AVL) system in bus transit through conducting an attitudinal on‐board survey in Bangkok. A passenger waiting‐time survey conducted as part of this study revealed that passengers perceive waiting‐time at bus stops to be greater than actually experienced. The other aim of this study is to examine the potential benefits of bus‐holding using an AVL technology, in terms of waiting‐time, through minimizing bus bunching under different congestion levels. The results are obtained using PARAMICS, and reveal a significant reduction in average waiting‐time.  相似文献

In many countries, dial-a-ride services are provided by public authorities to elderly and handicapped people who cannot use regular transit. Cost minimization is key to running these services, but one can observe a growing interest in quality measurement and improvement. A first step in improving quality is to define a quality measurement scale specific to dial-a-ride services. A second step is to incorporate quality measurements in mathematical models that serve as a basis for optimization algorithms. To this end, an extensive survey of dial-a-ride users was conducted in Longueuil, the largest suburb of Montreal, Canada. This paper describes the steps of the survey and presents its main conclusions: (1) 56 attributes were identified based on interviews, (2) the questionnaire developed has proved to be reliable and valid, (3) an exploratory factor analysis allowed us to determine 13 dimensions of quality in dial-a-ride services, (4) the most important criteria for users were identified, and (5) population segmenting variables by which subgroups of users can be categorized were also determined. Managerial implications of our results are also discussed.  相似文献

Research presented in this paper uses results from an acitivity diary survey to comment on the quality of data collected in a home interview travel survey. The two surveys were conducted in Adelaide, Australia. Evidence is presented to suggest that although a period of slightly more than three years separated the two surveys, the samples were reasonably similar with respect to their socio-demographic composition and real mobility levels. There was, however, a much higher level of travel and out-of-home activity reporting in the activity diary when compared to the home interview survey. Differences in reporting rates are examined in detail and areas of deficiency with the home interview survey are identified. The paper concludes with a short discussion of the possible implications of these deficiencies when home interview survey data is used to investigate a range of urban transport issues.  相似文献

There are growing concerns on traffic congestion, climate change and parking problems in major cities. Faced with these concerns, policy makers have sought sustainable transportation options including electric vehicle sharing programs (EVSPs). The city of Seoul with 10 million people also has recently launched an EVSP to provide citizens with an alternative travel mode. This study attempts to explore factors affecting the EVSP participants’ attitudes about car ownership and program participation. To do this, a web-based survey was conducted for the participants of the Seoul EVSP, asking their satisfaction levels for the components of the EVSP. Then, using 533 responses of 1772 EVSP members (a response rate of 30%), ordered probit models were developed for three types of attitudes: (1) willingness to dispose of a car, (2) willingness to purchase an EV and (3) willingness to continue participating in the EVSP. The estimated models suggested that participants’ social and economic perspectives were the most important factors affecting the participants’ attitudes. In addition, the attitudes varied depending on personal characteristics such as gender, age and income. Although this study was conducted in the early stage of an EVSP, its results are expected to provide insights into a better EVSP design.  相似文献

Assessing the accuracy of the Sydney Household Travel Survey with GPS   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Over the past few years, GPS has been used in a number of surveys in the US to assess the accuracy of household travel surveys. The results have been somewhat alarming in that most of these exercises have shown that the standard trip-based CATI survey conducted in the US under-reports travel by about 20–25%. It was decided to use GPS to assess the accuracy of the Sydney Household Travel Survey, a continuous survey conducted by face-to-face interviewing. The procedure used was for the interviewers to recruit households for the household travel survey in the normal manner, and then, if the household met certain criteria, to endeavour to recruit the household to also undertake a GPS survey. A small sample of about 50 households was obtained, and GPS devices successfully retrieved that measured data on the same day as the travel diary was completed. In addition, participants in the GPS survey completed a prompted recall survey a week or two later, using maps and tabulations of travel obtained from the GPS devices, to identify mode, purpose and occupancy for trips measured by the GPS, and also to check for accuracy in defining trip ends and total number of trips. Based on the analysis of the GPS compared to the diary results, it was found that respondents under-reported their travel by about 7%, which is much less than in the US CATI results. Respondents were also found to under-report travel distances and over-report travel times. There was also a high incidence of non-reporting for VKT.

Many types of travel behavior involve positive social interaction (conformity effect) and it sometimes induces undesirable results, such as chronic illegal bicycle parking and illegal car parking. In this study, the conformity effects among bicycle users in the choice problem of bicycle parking locations were modeled and estimated within a discrete choice framework. The proposed model combines discrete choice behavior of bicycle parking locations at an individual level (micro-level) with an average choice at an aggregate level (macro-level). The social equilibrium equation, which is derived from the individual-level choice model, entails multiple equilibria with regard to the choice proportion for each reference group of individuals. The model was econometrically identified by using the data collected in a survey conducted in Tokyo in 2001. The empirical results indicated that large variations in collective behavior occur across subgroups, which were defined by the stations the respondents visit often, since there was an intensive positive social interaction. Finally, the marginal frequency of police patrols required to drastically reduce the level of illegal bicycle parking was also calculated using the identified model.  相似文献

This paper reviews the results of an origin-destination survey conducted in Beirut, Lebanon. The survey was conducted according to the techniques developed and used in the U.S.A.There has always been some doubt that methodologies and techniques, namely dwelling unit interviews, developed for use in U.S. cities would work in cities of developing countries. The results of the study indicated that such methods proved to be useful and effective.In spite of the higher residential density and lower level of car ownership, trip rates in the city of Beirut were within the ranges observed in U.S. cities. The comparison of travel parameters acquired from various cities around the world might show that the regularities and trends in urban transportation are universal.  相似文献

External station travel surveys provide critical inputs to travel demand models. The results from these models are frequently used for statewide planning purposes. Although a roadside survey is very effective in obtaining useful information from road users, its major drawback is the excessive delay that is imposed onto road users particularly on high-volume facilities. In this paper, we used a discrete event simulation to model a blocked traffic lane survey, which is usually conducted for two-lane undivided highways. This type of survey station requires a complete stop of all oncoming traffic. Non-surveyed traffic has no ability to go around and thus has to wait in a queue in order to proceed through the survey station. Road users’ impacts are quantified in terms of delay and queue length while the performance of surveyors is measured by the number of surveys completed per unit time. Sensitivity analyses of simulation inputs reveal that simulation results are fairly insensitive to selected parameters. The results in this study provide a quick and useful guideline that roadside surveyors can use to estimate the road user impacts prior to the survey and to plan the survey procedure accordingly.  相似文献

This paper explores a new sequential decision methodology which integrates a generalized sequential probability ratio testing approach with a strategy-value matrix analytical tool to determine the developmental priorities of commercial vehicle operations (CVO) technical packages for CVO time-based strategic planning. The proposed method executes a sequential decision algorithm utilizing the strategic elements of strategy-value matrices which are estimated on the basis of the data collected from the survey respondents. In the process of sequential decision making, the identification of a specific CVO value-added technology package can be made once the condition of the minimum group decision-making cost is met. In addition to methodology development, a real case study together with a nation-wide mail survey to aid the estimation of the strategy-value matrix samples which were used as inputs to the proposed sequential decision algorithm was conducted in Taiwan to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. Utilizing the proposed method, we determined efficiently the developmental priorities of CVO technology packages for short-term, mid-term, and long-term strategic plans, respectively. Our analyses results indicated that the CVO package used for fleet management appears to be the most urgently needed in the short-term CVO strategic plan; value-added technology packages including: (1) data warehousing, (2) information technology, (3) integration with the supply chain management (SCM) platform, (4) freight mobility, (5) integration with advanced traffic management systems (ATMS), and (6) extension for intermodal operations are assigned to the mid-term CVO strategic plan; and others including: (1) freight administration, (2) HAZMAT management, (3) on-board safety monitoring, and (4) roadside safety inspections are involved in the long-term CVO strategic plan. We expect that this study can make available the proposed decision-making support method with benefits not only for planning CVO development strategies, but also for re-examining the role of commercial vehicle operations in a comprehensive extent.  相似文献

Ridesharing is quite a popular topic of discussion among transport authority personnel. It is perceived to be a viable alternative to classical modes of transportation, and receives a great deal of political support from transport planners. However, not much objective information is available on ridesharing behaviors. We use travel survey data to study the evolution of the ridesharing market in an urban area. Our study is based on data from four large-scale OD surveys conducted in the Greater Montreal Area (1987, 1993, 1998 and 2003). In the latest survey conducted in Montreal, car passengers were asked to identify the driver who gave them the opportunity to travel in this way. Their answers were classified according to the type of driver; for instance, a member of their household, a neighbor or a co-worker. We use this information to calibrate a model matching car passengers and car drivers belonging to the same household. This will be referred to as IHHR (intra-household ridesharing). Preliminary results reveal that approximately 70% of all trips made by car passengers are the result of IHHR. Furthermore, around 15% of those trips are questionable, in that they were exclusively generated for another individual’s purposes, consequently generating an additional trip for the journey back home. Moreover, this percentage increased over time. Objective data regarding ridesharing and its evolution in an urban area will undoubtedly help decision makers gain a clearer profile of this means of travel and help to realign attitudes on the issue.

The application of personal carbon trading (PCT) to transport choices has recently been considered in the literature as a means of reducing CO2 emissions. Its potential effectiveness in changing car travel behavior is compared to the conventional carbon tax (CT) by means of a stated preferences survey conducted among French drivers (N  300). We show evidence that PCT could effectively change travel behavior and hence reduce transport emissions from personal travel. There is however a definite reluctance to reduce car travel. We were unable to demonstrate any significant difference between the effectiveness of PCT and the CT with regard to changing travel behavior. However, in the experiment, the PCT scheme provided consistent results while this was not the case for the CT scheme. Further research is needed into the “social norm” conveyed by a personal emissions allowance.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of the mail out survey conducted in the United States to unveil the current state of practice related to the posting of minimum speed limit signs on Interstate freeway system. The analysis of the survey results has revealed that half of the country (25 states) posts the minimum speed limit on Interstate freeways. The most common posting is 40 mph. There are few states that post 45 mph and 55 mph in some sections on Interstate freeways. The survey results has also discovered that many states raised the maximum speed limits on Interstate freeways as the consequence of the National Highway System (NHS) designation Act of 1995 without revising or studying the effect of the existing minimum speed limits on traffic operation. Implications for future research relates to a multi state study which will evaluate the relevance of minimum speed limits on speed variability that is created by the posting of minimum speed limit.  相似文献

Household activity scheduling is widely regarded as the underlying mechanism through which people respond to emerging travel demand management policies. Despite this, very little fundamental research has been conducted into the underlying scheduling process to improve our understanding and ability forecast travel. The experimental survey approach presented in this paper attempts to fill this gap. At the core of the survey is a Computerized Household Activity Scheduling (CHASE) software program. The program is unique in that it runs for a week long period during which time all adult household members login daily to record their scheduling decisions as they occur over time. An up-front interview is used to define a household's activity agenda and mode availability. A sample of 41 households (66 adults and 14 children) was used to assess the performance of the survey. Analysis focuses on times to completion, daily scheduling steps, activity-travel patterns, and scheduling time horizons. Overall, the results show that the computer-based survey design was successful in gathering an array of information on the underlying process, while minimizing the burden on respondents. The survey was also capable of tracing traditionally observed activity-travel outcomes over a multi-day period with minimal fatigue effects. The paper concludes with a detailed discussion on future survey design, including issues of instrument bias, use of the Internet, and improved tracing of spatial behaviour. Future use of the survey methodology to enhance activity-travel diary surveys and stated responses experiments is also discussed. This paper presents an agent-based approach to modelling individual driver behaviour under the influence of real-time traffic information. The driver behaviour models developed in this study are based on a behavioural survey of drivers which was conducted on a congested commuting corridor in Brisbane, Australia. Commuters’ responses to travel information were analysed and a number of discrete choice models were developed to determine the factors influencing drivers’ behaviour and their propensity to change route and adjust travel patterns. Based on the results obtained from the behavioural survey, the agent behaviour parameters which define driver characteristics, knowledge and preferences were identified and their values determined. A case study implementing a simple agent-based route choice decision model within a microscopic traffic simulation tool is also presented. Driver-vehicle units (DVUs) were modelled as autonomous software components that can each be assigned a set of goals to achieve and a database of knowledge comprising certain beliefs, intentions and preferences concerning the driving task. Each DVU provided route choice decision-making capabilities, based on perception of its environment, that were similar to the described intentions of the driver it represented. The case study clearly demonstrated the feasibility of the approach and the potential to develop more complex driver behavioural dynamics based on the belief–desire–intention agent architecture.  相似文献

Abstract

An area pricing scheme for Jakarta, Indonesia, is currently under review as a transportation control measure along with the operation of new bus rapid transit (BRT) system. While this scheme may be effective for congestion reduction in the central business district (CBD), provision of alternative means of transportation for auto users that are ‘pushed-out’ is of great importance to obtain public acceptance. Hence, it is necessary to simulate simultaneously the area pricing scheme and the BRT development which may serve as an alternative for assumed ‘pushed-out’ auto users. Utilizing data from an opinion survey, this paper studies how BRT and auto ridership are likely to vary as a function of traveler and system attributes. Additionally, the study attempts to evaluate the way this new travel mode is distinguished from other existing conventional transportation alternatives in Jakarta. The survey data contains socioeconomic information of over 1000 respondents as well as details of to-work/school trips to the CBD including mode, travel cost, time, etc. Respondents were asked about their willingness to shift from their current mode to BRT to make the same travel for different BRT fare levels. Modeling efforts suggest that a mixed logit model performs better in explaining choice behavior. Therefore, this model was used for policy simulation. The simulation results brought about many implications as to the tested policies. While the developed models may be applied only to future BRT corridors in which the survey was conducted, they capture the key variables that are significant in explaining mode choice behavior and present great potential for practical use in policy simulation and analysis in a large metropolitan area of the developing world.  相似文献

Previous research has shown that electric vehicle (EV) users could behave differently compared to internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV) drivers due to their consciousness or practices of eco-driving, but very limited research has fully investigated this assumption. This research explores this topic through investigating EV drivers’ eco-driving behaviors and motivations. We first conducted a questionnaire survey on EV drivers’ driving behavior and some hypothetical decisions of their driving. It indicates various characteristics between EV and ICEV commuters, including self-reported daily driving habits, preferences of route choices, tradeoff between travel time and energy saving, and adoption of in-vehicle display (IVD) technologies. Then, through statistical analysis with Fisher’s exact test and Mann-Whitney U test, this research reveals that, compared to ICEV drivers, EV drivers possess significantly calmer driving maneuvers and more fuel-efficient driving habits such as trip chaining. The survey data also show that EV drivers are much more willing to save energy in compensation of travel time. Furthermore, the survey data indicate that EV drivers are more willing to adopt eco-friendly IVD technologies. All these findings are expected to improve the understanding of some unique behavior found in EV drivers.  相似文献
