It has been more than two decades since the Port of Seattle welcomed to our harbor the first ship flying the flag of the Peoples Republic of China. I am pleased to send my best wishes to the China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) as it celebrates 20 years of friendship and successful trade relations between the United States and the People's Republic of China on this 20th anniversary of the maiden voyage of the vessel M.V. LIULINHAI. Much has happened in the 20 years since U.S. trade with China was reinstated in 1979, and China has grown to become an important partner in Washington's Asia-Pacific trade relationship. Washington's status as the most trade-dependent state in the nation and our geographic location on the edge of the Pacific Rim dictate that

On 3 May 2003,a COSCO cargo carrier “Fu Shan Hai“ collided with a Polish containership in the sea east of Denmark and sank later. It was reported that the insurance premium for M/V “Fu Shan Hai“ is as high as US＄30m. It is the ever large claim case in the marine insurance history of the People‘s Insurance Company of China (PICC). Though PICC launched its emergent compensation procedure and paid 70m yuan (RMB) to COSCO, this is far from enough to fill the hole. The “Fu Shan Hai“ accident gave a hard strike on the marine insurance market, worsening the difficult situation of marine insurance in China. In recent years, we have often heard the calling for making China a “large shipping and shipbuilding nation“, while our marine insurance market has been in stagnancy, which disappoints those insurance tycoons who have been kept waiting for long time.

As everyone knows, the three major ocean carriers in China is China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO), China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) and SINOTRANS, among which COSCO is the largest shipping conglomerate in China and has suitably grand plans for the future. This company is a member of CHKY alliance organized by the world well known carriers, i.e. COSCO, Hanjin, Kawasaki and Yang Ming.

CIMC——世界集装箱工业的巨人

China International Marine Containers (Group), one of the pioneer container manufacturers and Sino-foreign joint ventures in China, was founded by China Merchants Holdings and the East Asiatic Company Ltd. in January 1980 and put into operation on 22nd September 1982. CIMC became a tri-party joint venture after COSCO joined in. CIMC went to the public in 1993 and has been listed in Shenzhen Stock Exchange market since April 1994. The operation of CIMC started to run as a group structure in 1995.

Standing amidst the turbulent current of trade to strive to maintain a superb shipping line
