Intense competition in many sectors across the maritime industry and in professional ship management in particular, means that the quest for achieving competitiveness will continue and intensify. A review of the current strategies across many sectors of the industry indicates the importance of forging stable partnerships for the achievement of competitiveness. Considering that the capability to form a relationship is an intangible resource (as depicted in resource-advantage theory), an empirical assessment in the context of ship management was undertaken. The assessment aimed to identify the type of relationships present in ship management, and succeeded in classifying those relationships into four distinct groups. The central thesis of the paper is that maritime organizations in general, and ship management companies in particular, may utilize their intangible relational resources in order to achieve competitive advantage. Based on the classification of ship management relationships, implications for managers are discussed.  相似文献

The retention of officer–seafarers within the international shipping industry is a difficult problem facing shipping and ship management companies. One strategic option open to all companies that should improve overall retention is to seek to become an employer of choice by providing an intellectual capital environment attractive to officer–seafarers. This is investigated through a survey of officer–seafarers covering areas where ship management can exercise some control over their working conditions. These cover recognition by their employer and commensurate rewards, organizational culture and structure and building relationships with external parties. Experienced Indian sub-continent officer–seafarers were the sample population resulting in more than 200 valid completions. These were analysed using correlation and regression. Although all hypotheses were in the predicted direction, only four passed the significance test: long-term career prospects, a smooth and fair recruitment process, a better relationship with maritime authorities and an employee-friendly organizational culture. Stepwise regression indicated that only organizational culture had a significant positive effect on intention to remain a seafarer. The items in the organizational culture construct accord with recommendations from the literature on becoming an employer of choice and improving employee retention, providing guidance for attracting and retaining officers.  相似文献

An assessment of the rationale for the vertical disintegration of ship management suggests that there might be compelling economic benefits for the separation of ownership from management. In this context, as a means for developing effective marketing strategies, it is important for ship managers to know the criteria used by current and prospective clients for ship manager selection and evaluation. The aim of this paper is to empirically identify the dimensions for ship manager selection and performance evaluation and their relative importance and to discuss the implications for marketing emanating from such an assessment. The methodology adopted includes the collection of secondary and primary data, both from ship managers and their clients, using interviews and a mail survey. The results indicate the prevailing importance of certain dimensions in selection (e.g. technical ability, reputation, competency) and evaluation (responsiveness, trustworthiness, technical ability), whereas it also found that price alone is not perceived to be as important in ship manager selection. It is concluded that placing emphasis on such dimensions in the formulation of a marketing strategy will contribute towards the attraction and retention of clients, whereas cost-cutting measures to allow price reduction, as well as advertising, will be ineffective over the long term.  相似文献

The present study empirically evaluates the role of human talent in the effective implementation of quality management systems in the shipping industry context. Specifically, we analyze the relationships among top management commitment to quality, ISM (International Safety Management) Code effectiveness and competitiveness as well as we assess the influence of talent in these associations. We test our research hypotheses using a sample of 199 shipping companies located in Greece. The findings show that ISM Code effectiveness acts as a mediator between top management commitment and shipping company competitiveness, while the different talent philosophies were found to moderate this relationship.  相似文献

通过对军船入级的起源、美国军船入级历程和经验的研究,可以更好地了解军船入级的目的、程序和方法。本文首先对美国军船入级组织机构、运作方式及管理模式进行分析。在此基础上,对美国《海军高速舰艇指南》和《海军舰船规范》2个军船入级标准的架构及应用情况进行研究。剖析军船入级在小型高速巡逻艇、鱼雷回收艇及新一代大型水面舰船DDG1000入级过程中的实际应用效果。指出美国船级社及美国海军技术委员会在军船入级过程中所发挥的核心作用。通过研究认为军船入级是一项战略性决策,将在舰船建造管理及全寿命保障中收到事半功倍的良好效果。  相似文献

The issues surrounding the future of Korea's shipping policy have been heavily debated since 1990 because the Korean shipping industry has been facing rising crew costs and difficulties in recruitment of qualified crew, an adverse taxation system, very limited access to foreign capital markets, and an inflexible government regulatory environment. Consequently, this has contributed to the deterioration of Korea's compectitive edge. This paper aims to provide both an account of the current adverse situtation in Korean shipping business and proposals to alleviate the plight of shipping enterprises. Within the context of that adversity, two solutions are suggested to improve the current situation, by either establishing a Korean second register or flagging out. The paper explores the advantages and disadvantages of each solution. Because ship management is closely interrelated to flagging strategies, the paper also discusses areas of co-operation between Korean shipping or ship management companies and advanced foreign ship management companies.  相似文献

Ship management has been characterized by strong competition that resulted in structural changes in the industry, with the bigger companies merging or acquiring smaller ones in an effort to remain competitive. Competitiveness, however, may also be attained through the formulation and implementation of competitive business strategies that will improve performance. The aim of this paper has been to empirically examine the competitive strategy-performance relationship in the context of ship management companies. The findings suggest that there is a positive relationship between pursuing competitive strategies and company performance in ship management. Companies that apply competitive strategies are more likely to be high performers. The strongest influences on performance seem to be achieving economies of scale, differentiation (in particular through a wider range of services offered) and market-focus and competitor-analysis. It is suggested that high performers are more likely to pursue a combination of the generic strategies rather than pursuing one of the generic strategies in isolation.  相似文献

跨海大桥的建设有利于促进两岸及其周边地区发展,进一步提升城市竞争力,对于整个地区的经济、社会发展都具有深远的、重大的战略意义。然而,大桥的建设改变了当地的船舶通航环境,通航孔宽度影响船舶自由航行。因此,有必要对桥区水域船舶通行能力进行研究。基于航海操纵模拟器,模拟船舶紧急制动距离,运用排队论的相关理论,分析大桥通航孔船舶通行能力,为建立桥区通航管理规则,合理规划过桥等待锚地提供参考,以利于保障桥区水域船舶航行安全。  相似文献

倘若按敏捷制造理论来考虑船舶建造过程,将每艘船的设计和建造过程管理视为一个项目组并以此作为盟主,则各个分段加工中心和大量的配套厂是内外盟员且可组成一个动态联盟;若多艘船同时建造,则存在多个项目的动态联盟,并形成多层次和多交叉的形态. 本文在基于CPC理念的协同平台上将船厂、客户、供应商和合作伙伴引入船舶的开发和建造过程,通过有效的协作,将质量好、全寿命成本低的船舶更快地推向市场.文中对组建船舶建造多项目动态联盟的方式及其协调机制进行了分析和研究,并用多学科分析综合的方式提出了对船舶建造系统的模式及其功能进行评价的方法,为进一步研究和探索新的造船模式提供了参考.  相似文献
