Urban metro systems are subject to recurring service disruption for various reasons, such as mechanical or electrical failure, adverse weather, or other accidents. In recent years, studies on metro networks have attracted increasing attention because the consequence of operational accidents is barely affordable. This study proposes to measure the metro network vulnerability from the perspective of line operation by taking the Shanghai metro network as a case study. As opposed to previous studies that focused largely on disruption of important nodes or links, this study investigates the disruption from the line operation perspective. Betweenness centrality (BC) and passenger betweenness centrality (PBC), number of missed trips, weighted average path length, and weighted global efficiency were analyzed considering relative disruption probability of each line. Passenger flow distribution and re-distribution were simulated for different disruption scenarios based on all-or-nothing assignment rule. The results indicate that the metro lines carrying a large number of passengers generally have a significant impact on the network vulnerability. The lines with circular topological form also have a significant influence on passenger flow re-distribution in case of a disruption. The results of this study provide suggestions on metro system administration for potential improvement of the performance of operation, and passengers may meanwhile have an improved alternate plan for their commute trip when a disruption occurs. 相似文献

Regenerative braking is an energy recovery mechanism that converts the kinetic energy during braking into electricity, also known as regenerative energy. In general, most of the regenerative energy is transmitted backward along the pantograph and fed back into the overhead contact line. To reduce the trains’ energy consumption, this paper develops a scheduling approach to coordinate the arrivals and departures of all trains located in the same electricity supply interval so that the energy regenerated from braking trains can be more effectively utilized to accelerate trains. Firstly, we formulate an integer programming model with real-world speed profiles to minimize the trains’ energy consumption with dwell time control. Secondly, we design a genetic algorithm and an allocation algorithm to find a good solution. Finally, we present numerical examples based on the real-life operation data from the Beijing Metro Yizhuang Line in Beijing, China. The results show that the proposed scheduling approach can reduce energy consumption by 6.97% and save about 1,054,388 CNY (or 169,223 USD) each year in comparison with the current timetable. Compared to the cooperative scheduling (CS) approach, the proposed scheduling approach can improve the utilization of regenerative energy by 36.16% and reduce the total energy consumption by 4.28%. 相似文献

Information of link flows in a traffic network becomes increasingly critical in contemporary transportation practice and researches. The network sensor installation is carried out to supply such information. In this paper, we present a graphical approach to determine the smallest subset of links in a traffic network for counting sensor installation, so as to infer the flows on all remaining links. The elegant assumption-free character of the problem introduced by Hu, Peeta and Chu is still kept in this approach. This study points out the topological tree feature of solutions that makes it possible for traffic management agencies to easily and flexibly select links for sensor installation in practice. Addressing from the same graphical perspective, we provide solutions to four other important problems about sensor locations. The preceding two problems are, in traffic networks that already have sensors installed on some links, to identify the subset of links on which link flows can be inferred from sensor measurements and to determine the smallest subset of links on which counting sensors also need to be installed so as to infer link flows on all remaining non-equipped links. The third is to identify the optimal locations for a given number of sensors so as to infer flows on as many links as possible by gradually enlarging the number of links included in circuits. The last one is to determine the smallest subset of links on which to install sensors, in such a way that it becomes possible at the same time to satisfy prior requirements and infer the flows on all remaining links, through building a minimum spanning tree. New transit capital expenditures are typically evaluated in isolation from the transit/transport systems to which they belong. Problems with reporting performance elements such as ridership and costs are discussed. A focus on evaluating the total transport systems impact of new transit project implementation is called for. On this basis, new US rail transit systems have generally performed poorly. Total transit ridership has generally shown only minimal improvements and, at times, has declined. Financial performance has been disappointing in most cases, particularly when understood in the context of the additional system costs imposed through the reconfiguration of bus networks to serve the new rail systems. Low-cost approaches to improving basic transit services can often be more effective than either rail or bus capital-based projects. An obsession with technology leads to the wrong questions being asked. We should instead start inquiry with the study of needs. 相似文献

Since the first pilot scheme for area‐traffic control was introduced in the city of Montreal (1959–60), computer control of traffic in urban areas through the adaptation of existing traffic‐signal systems has been provided to an increasing extent. This area of work may pose problems for the professional traffic engineer whose background in computer technology and general digital electronics may be limited. In considering the engineering implications of such schemes a systems approach is important and is adopted here. Three existing and representative schemes are briefly mentioned in order to outline basic features. A more detailed examination of the various system elements follows with mention of data collection and transmission, and the role of the control computer. The paper continues with a reconsideration of the three representative schemes in the light of the detailed treatment of system components. It concludes with a tentative assessment of the present position of area traffic control schemes and some suggestions as to the future development. 相似文献

This paper develops a flexible GIS-based methodology for evaluating the potential locations of terminal park-and-ride facilities
along urban rail lines. The methodology differs from political-based approaches and traditional travel demand modeling in
its use of an objective measure of accessibility to gage the suitability of a site. The methodology begins by constructing
an index of derived demand for rail usage based on the local demographics. Principal component analysis (PCA) is used as a
means of constructing an index of derived demand consistent with other passenger surveys. Next, trade areas or commutersheds
are calculated for each candidate park-and-ride location based on realistic measures of accessibility and network based drive
times, taking into account competition among candidates for riders. Following the analysis, the candidate locations and their
commutersheds are delineated and visualized in the GIS environment. In summary, application of this method produces a site-specific
suitability index that may be used to rank and compare potential park-and-ride locations. We illustrate how our approach fits
within the context of the larger-scale corridor study as a complimentary means of refining the location of urban rail stations.
The analysis uses the proposed rail system for Columbus Ohio as a case study.

This paper discusses the factors that determine the utility of a mode and attempts to suggest and investigate a novel fuzzy measure based solution approach to the problem of multimodal analysis in a multicriteria context. The paper expands on the notions of fuzzy logic and in particular, fuzzy measures. The approach attempts to estimate the probabilities of the “overall system” from a group of eight experts who are experienced in transport planning. The data is used to ascertain the relative utility of various modes in a competitive environment. Traffic Related Air Pollution (TRAP) studies are usually investigated using different categories such as air pollution exposure for health impacts, urban transportation network design to mitigate pollution, environmental impacts of pollution, etc. All of these subfields often rely on a robust air pollution model, which also necessitates an accurate prediction of future pollutants. As is widely accepted by the heath authorities, TRAP is considered to be the major health issue in urban areas, and it is difficult to keep pollution at harmless levels if the time sequenced dynamic pollution and traffic parameters are not identified and modelled efficiently. In our work here, artificial intelligence techniques, such as Bayesian Networks with an optimized configuration, are used to deliver a probabilistic traffic data analysis and predictive modelling for air pollution (SO2, NO2 and CO) at very local scale of an urban region with up to 85% accuracy. The main challenge for traditional data analysis is a lack of capability to reveal the hidden links between distant data attributes (e.g. pollution sources, dynamic traffic parameters, etc.), whereas some subtle effects of these parameters or events may play an important role in pollution on a long-term basis. This study focuses on the optimisation of Bayesian Networks to unveil hidden links and to increase the prediction accuracy of TRAP considering its further association with a predictive GIS system. 相似文献

The paper investigates the efficiency of a recently developed signal control methodology, which offers a computationally feasible technique for real-time network-wide signal control in large-scale urban traffic networks and is applicable also under congested traffic conditions. In this methodology, the traffic flow process is modeled by use of the store-and-forward modeling paradigm, and the problem of network-wide signal control (including all constraints) is formulated as a quadratic-programming problem that aims at minimizing and balancing the link queues so as to minimize the risk of queue spillback. For the application of the proposed methodology in real time, the corresponding optimization algorithm is embedded in a rolling-horizon (model-predictive) control scheme. The control strategy’s efficiency and real-time feasibility is demonstrated and compared with the Linear-Quadratic approach taken by the signal control strategy TUC (Traffic-responsive Urban Control) as well as with optimized fixed-control settings via their simulation-based application to the road network of the city centre of Chania, Greece, under a number of different demand scenarios. Knowledge-based systems (KBS) represent a novel computer-based approach for dealing with practical traffic engineering problems. As traffic engineers adapt and apply KBS technological tenets, there is a need to reflect on exactly how development efforts should proceed and, particularly, on how a KBS should be verified as “correct.” Such experience is likely to accrue from hindsight; what went right—or wrong—during an actual KBS project. Unfortunately, hindsight does not provide direct experience with the application of a specific development paradigm. In this paper, we detail our experiences in applying a specific verification framework (based on traditional software engineering tenets) during a traffic engineering KBS development effort. Recent developments in intelligent transportation systems pose new challenges and opportunities for urban transportation planning. To meet these challenges and to exploit these opportunities, a framework for a new transportation planning methodology has been developed. The methodology operates in a computer environment, called PLANiTS (Planning and Analysis Integration for Intelligent Transportation Systems), designed to facilitate the entire planning process form problem identification, through idea generation and analysis, on to prioritization and programming. To assist in problem identification, PLANiTS provides graphic representation of current conditions, including traffic, air pollution, accidents, and projections of future conditions. A computerized knowledge base, containing information about possible strategies and their effects, and a model base, containing transportation and other analysis models, are used to guide the user in identifying potentially effective strategies and performing the appropriate analysis. To facilitate the use of these tools, PLANiTS provides computer support of group processes such as brainstorming, deliberation, and consensus seeking. PLANiTS is designed for use in urban transportation planning at the local, regional, and state levels; it is intended to support a variety of participants in the planning process including transportation professionals, decision makers in transportation agencies (often local elected officials), citizens, and interest groups. Recognizing that transportation planning is essentially a deliberative, political process, PLANiTS is designed to inform and facilitate, but not replace, the political decision-making process. 相似文献

A continuum model that describes a disordered, heterogeneous traffic stream is presented. Such systems are widely prevalent in developing countries where classical traffic models cannot be readily applied. The characteristics of such systems are unique since drivers of smaller vehicles exploit their maneuverability to move ahead through lateral gaps at lower speeds. At higher speeds, larger vehicles press their advantage of greater motive power. The traffic stream at the microscopic level is disordered and defines a porous medium. Each vehicle is considered to move through a series of pores defined by other vehicles. A speed-density relationship that explicitly considers the pore space distribution is presented. This captures the considerable dynamics between vehicle classes that are overlooked when all classes are converted to a reference class (usually Passenger Car Equivalents) as is traditionally done. Longitudinal discrete choice models which use a mixing distribution to control for unobserved heterogeneity, and which are estimated by a nonparametric maximum likelihood mass point procedure, have so far been restricted to the analysis of dichotomous choices. This paper extends mass point methods to the case of polytomous choice problems and in so doing makes an important contribution to the analysis of longitudinal data and dynamic discrete choice models. Estimating the travel time reliability (TTR) of urban arterial is critical for real-time and reliable route guidance and provides theoretical bases and technical support for sophisticated traffic management and control. The state-of-art procedures for arterial TTR estimation usually assume that path travel time follows a certain distribution, with less consideration about segment correlations. However, the conventional approach is usually unrealistic because an important feature of urban arterial is the dependent structure of travel times on continuous segments. In this study, a copula-based approach that incorporates the stochastic characteristics of segments travel time is proposed to model arterial travel time distribution (TTD), which serves as a basis for TTR quantification. First, segments correlation is empirically analyzed and different types of copula models are examined. Then, fitting marginal distributions for segment TTD is conducted by parametric and non-parametric regression analysis, respectively. Based on the estimated parameters of the models, the best-fitting copula is determined in terms of the goodness-of-fit tests. Last, the model is examined at two study sites with AVI data and NGSIM trajectory data, respectively. The results of path TTD estimation demonstrate the advantage of the proposed copula-based approach, compared with the convolution model without capturing segments correlation and the empirical distribution fitting methods. Furthermore, when considering the segments correlation effect, it was found that the estimated path TTR is more accurate than that by the convolution model. 相似文献

The paths followed by vehicles in urban areas are densely interwoven, and some of the accidents and congestion that occur in city centres can be attributed to the ‘conflicts’ that arise where these paths intersect. Hence, it is desirable to encourage traffic patterns in which the frequency and severity of conflicts are minimised. At present, neither signal optimisation programs nor traffic simulation programs allow the user to experiment freely with different combinations of one-way streets and turn restrictions, which might otherwise help to disentangle conflicting movements. There is no accepted formula or philosophy for organising traffic into a coherent spatial pattern. The aim of this paper is to consider some idealised networks and circulation systems that have simple geometrical configurations, and to identify those systems that are relatively efficient in terms of path crossings, as compared with a theoretical yardstick derived from graph theory. We present an approach to systematically analysing the vulnerability of road networks under disruptions covering extended areas. Since various kinds of events including floods, heavy snowfall, storms and wildfires can cause such spatially spread degradations, the analysis method is an important complement to the existing studies of single link failures. The methodology involves covering the study area with grids of uniformly shaped and sized cells, where each cell represents the extent of an event disrupting any intersecting links. We apply the approach to the Swedish road network using travel demand and network data from the Swedish national transport modelling system Sampers. The study shows that the impacts of area-covering disruptions are largely determined by the level of internal, outbound and inbound travel demand of the affected area itself. This is unlike single link failures, where the link flow and the redundancy in the surrounding network determine the impacts. As a result, the vulnerability to spatially spread events shows a markedly different geographical distribution. These findings, which should be universal for most road networks of similar scale, are important in the planning process of resource allocation for mitigation and recovery. 相似文献

An integrated software tool environment is presented, and a methodology is proposed for the operational support of the local authority, for analysis of the impact of transport measures in terms of network energy consumption and pollutant emissions. It is based on work done by the European Union within the save program (specific actions for vigorous energy efficiency)—Slam project (supporting local authorities methodology). As background, the Slam project is described, with the principal aspects and needs of environmental and traffic network management. The central section defines a methodology able to support technicians in recognizing the traffic asset and decision makers in evaluating interventions on urban transport infrastructures or technological systems. The role of the different models and their interactions with the transport telematics services currently active on the Florence (Italy) network is discussed. Finally, the procedure for calculating the traffic impacts on energy consumption is described with the help of a test case, the evaluation of a dedicated bus corridor in Florence. 相似文献
