Mechanisms for the control of transnational shipping corporations

The author presents a model of the conflicts that arise in the transnational shipping industry with special emphasis on control alternatives during entry into shipping operations. He concludes that, since transnational shipping is a non-zero sum game, gains can be created for world shipping as a whole.

Transnational corporations; problems for study in the new international order of maritime shipping

This paper examines what is becoming the new order of maritime shipping, the transnational corporation. By combining the flags of convenience with crews of convenience, these corporations have become entiitcs with an existence above and beyond the nation-state in which they operate. Factors contributing to and problems resulting from this maritime structure are discussed. Possible resons for scholarly neglect of this area in the U.S.A. are suggested.     

Determinants of the probability of default: the case of the internationally listed shipping corporations

In this study, we use a sample of 192 listed shipping companies and employ a logit model in order to investigate the determinants of the probability of default. We enhance our analysis by isolating not only the cases of company liquidations but also those cases where companies had to change their legal status due to warning liquidity signals. Our key findings are in line with prior research and moreover we depict a changing trend in the marginal effects of relevant variables, on the probability of default. We further show, through an empirical application, how the obtained results can be used in a managerial decision-making process and in a bank credit underwriting process in order to assess the creditworthiness of a shipping company.     

航运枢纽防渗措施优化*

姚家枢纽是钱塘江中上游衢江干流六级梯级开发的最后一级航运枢纽。针对枢纽强透水地基渗流控制问题开展三维渗流数值模拟分析,比较渗流控制措施的具体几何尺寸及其防渗效果,优化防渗形式,并预报防渗措施下的浸没、绕渗和渗漏。结果表明：地基粉细砂和砂砾石为主要渗透通道,易发生渗透变形,枢纽三维绕渗特征明显,两岸地下水水位较高,两侧边坡出逸位置较高。防渗墙水平长度越长,堤防坡脚处渗透坡降越小,但防渗效果随着延伸长度逐步降低,建议选取合理的防渗长度为400～600 m。防渗墙措施下下游边坡依然有出逸,需采取包括护坡反滤在内的多种防渗措施,提高渗透稳定性。

A GPS-based system for precise shipping guidance and control

This paper discusses the general concept of an automatic berthing system. The research considered the automatic berthing of a large merchant ship. A global positioning system (GPS)-based system, which provides the necessary information on position, velocity, attitude (roll, pitch, and heading), angular velocity, and time, was the principal sensor used. Field tests were conducted on board a hydrographic sounding ship to assess the quality of information obtained from a GPS-based system. The data were processed using the software with which the algorithms developed in this research were implemented. This paper also discusses various aspects concerning a real-time GPS-based system in relation to an automatic berthing system, such as integration of sensors, mathematical models, port infrastructure, and training of crews. Valuation mismatch and shipping q indicator for shipping asset management

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to develop an adaptation of the Tobin Q investment model for the shipping asset management in order to monitor valuation mismatch and bubble pricing of shipping assets. In this circumstance, the market prices of various shipping assets (e.g., Capesize or Panamax dry bulk carriers in different age profiles) are compared to the measured long-term asset value with second-hand ship prices. The mark-to-market prices of shipping assets are led by current market trends and freight rates, while the long-term asset value is estimated by using past data under certain assumptions (mean reversion, trend reversion). The discrepancy between market prices and the long-term nominal value of a shipping asset reflects any mispricing, which in turn sheds light on investment timing and market entry-exit decision.
