In the mid 1960s the world OSV industry was dominated by American operators, but with the rise of the North Sea offshore industry, British entrepreneurs were given the chance to contest American dominance. By the mid 1970s British OSV companies had made great progress and, at least in the North Sea context, their principal rivals were now the Norwegians rather than the Americans. British OSV companies continued to prosper until the world oil price collapse of 1986. This blow led to a restructuring of the British OSV industry, which led, by the mid-1990s, to Stirling Shipping being the principal British OSV firm in the North Sea and OIL being the largest non-American OSV company in the world. The 1997 sale of OIL to the Americans was a blow to the British OSV sector, but British enterprise in this field still continues in the North Sea.  相似文献

As integrated supply-chain management (SCM) is now at the epicentre of business transformation, firms are breaking down boundaries between internal functions, as well as between the enterprise itself and key partners in the value chain (e.g. customers, distributors, suppliers and carriers). One of the main goals of such new management approach is to get everyone in the supply chain into a common platform of logistics transactions and information systems.

Against such background, the aim of this work is to analyse how and if port operators can face the challenge of higher integration, on the assumption that the higher the integration between the actors the higher the competitiveness of the whole supply chain.

Accordingly, we adopted an SCM approach in the analysis of the port of Le Havre in Renault's supply chain. More specifically, we referred to the Lambert tri-dimensional model based on supply chain's structure (actors), key business processes and links between actors. The field work—which mainly consisted of semi-structured interviews to Renault, logistics and port operators, and, finally, to the Le Havre Port Authority—was crucial to gather the needed information.  相似文献

We explore the complexity issue relevant to a logistics service process characterized by unpredictable service stages and service sequences in the context of chemical tankers’ call in the Port of Houston. The operational dimensions of uncertainty and conflict surrounding process complexity are examined through a mixed-methods approach using both qualitative and quantitative data collected from the Port of Houston. We propose a taxonomy to classify several uncertainty and conflict factors emerged from our qualitative analysis, including structural conflict, structural uncertainty, infrastructural conflict, and infrastructural uncertainty. The case study findings are validated and triangulated by a quantitative analysis which quantifies the time and cost impacts of unproductive chemical tanker movement on port-call service performance. We contribute to the complexity theory by introducing four dimensions of process complexity to the stream of process-oriented logistics service research. These four complexity dimensions can be used by managers to untangle their process complexity. Our pseudo-service-stage based mapping technique will also be valuable for managers to visualize their service processes with unpredictable service sequences. Finally, we call for future research on synchronization across operational processes between service stages.  相似文献

Although there is widespread recognition of the potential of ports as logistics centres, widely accepted performance measurements for such centres have yet to be developed. The essence of logistics and supply chain management is an integrative approach to the interaction of different processes and functions within a firm extended to a network of organizations for the purpose of cost reduction and customer satisfaction []. The logistics approach often adopts a cost trade-off analysis between functions, processes and even supply chains []. This approach could be beneficial to port efficiency by directing port strategy towards relevant value-added logistics activities. This paper seeks to show that through conceptualizing ports from a logistics and supply chain management approach, it is possible to suggest a relevant framework of port performance. This paper introduces the concept of maritime logistics value as one of the most significant strategic goals that maritime operators want to achieve. The value is reflected in operational efficiency (e.g. reducing lead time and business costs) and service effectiveness (e.g. flexibility, responsiveness and reliability in the service). Drawing from key theories and practices in strategic management such as knowledge-based perspective and social network embeddedness perspective, this paper adopts a knowledge management strategy as a way to create and sustain the maritime logistics value. A conceptual framework is established for the exploration of the way to acquire knowledge and the effectiveness of the acquired knowledge in maximising the maritime logistics value. Following the parameters of this framework, the positive relationship between social networks, knowledge acquisition and maritime logistics value is identified, and its relevant theoretical and practical implications are discussed.  相似文献

This study examines whether the implementation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and provision of service quality (SQ) to satisfy shippers result in financial synergies or trade-offs for shipping firms. To address this question, a contingency framework was introduced in this study. The literature was first reviewed for hypotheses development, followed by interviews with eight industry practitioners. Subsequently, an internet survey was administered to 156 shipping firms in Singapore, and the obtained data were analysed using path model analysis and simple slope analysis. The results indicate that CSR complements SQ and provides additional but modest financial contribution to shipping firms via customer satisfaction. In addition, synergistic interactions between SQ and CSR were found. Although there are financial synergies from the implementation of CSR and provision of SQ, the analysis reveals that CSR should only be engaged when a shipping firm is fairly competent at delivering quality shipping services. This paper contributes to both theory and practice by framing business decisions on implementing CSR under contingency theory and offering a strategic approach to managing SQ as well as CSR of shipping firms.  相似文献

The need for analytical solutions towards various managerial processes in shipping business has been clearly seen in maritime society. To remedy this gap, the execution of relevant processes can be supported via multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques. This article applied an Integrated Decision Aid (IDEA) to overcome the model selection dilemma for process improvement in shipping business. The illustrative application of the IDEA makes invaluable contributions for the ongoing efforts of relevant executives on adopting modern management style in shipping business. Container shipping and its related service sectors help accelerate globalization of the world economy. This industry has been experiencing rapid growth, prompting container terminal operators to increase their handling capacity in response. Providing container terminal services requires substantial capital investment in physical assets such as cargo handling facilities and information systems. On the other hand, operating container terminals is a long-term investment that typically spans several business cycles. Hence prudent asset management using appropriate tools is critical for container terminal operators to sustain their businesses. Generally, due to risk-adverseness, investors are unwilling to take more risk in their investment unless they can reap a higher return. Contrary to this argument, this study finds no direct influence of better firm performance as a proxy of higher return on business risk-taking by container terminal operators. Instead, scale of operations is positively associated with business risk-taking, suggesting that container terminal operators with a larger scale of operations are willing to take more business risk.  相似文献

海洋工程装备项目物资仓储管控具有物资种类繁多、仓储点众多、仓储环境复杂、物资调度任务交错进行等特点。为提高海洋工程装备项目的物资仓储管控效率,减少手工操作工作量,本文分析了仓储活动流程,构建了基于MAS (Multi-agent System,多智能体系统)的海工装备项目物资仓储管控系统框架,并进一步针对库位分配问题提出了具体的协商模型和决策算法,最终采用B/S架构开发了基于MAS的海工装备项目物资仓储管控系统原型。实例验证表明,应用多智能体技术可有效辅助海工装备企业进行智能化物资仓储管控。  相似文献

Global economic development is facilitated by the commercial shipping industry. Shipping operations contribute to the growth of international trade activities, which heavily count on ships to carry cargoes from places of production to places of consumption. Despite its importance, there have been growing concerns about the environmental impacts caused by shipping activities in international trade. To balance environmental protection and productivity, many shipping firms have begun to adopt green shipping practices (GSPs) to improve their operations in a more environmentally friendly manner. GSP consists of six dimensions, namely, company policy and procedure (CPP), shipping documentation (SD), shipping equipment (SE), shipper cooperation (SC), shipping materials (SM), and shipping design and compliance (SDC). GSP is becoming an important aspect of shipping operations. It is timely for the shipping industry to evaluate firm capability in carrying out greening operations, that is, firms’ “greening” capability. Firm capability comprises two key elements: one is embedded in firms’ business routines or activities, and the other concerns firms’ ability in transforming inputs into outputs. GSPs can be considered as inputs while firm performance measures as outputs. This study uses an input/output approach to examine the greening capability (GC) of shipping firms. The results indicate that shipping firms are relatively weak in the practices of SC and SE, while the capability scores of SM, CPP, SDC, and SD are all close to 1, with an average score of 0.927, 0.920, 0.924, and 0.978, respectively. Academic and managerial significance of the findings are highlighted.  相似文献
