Factors affecting the operational success of strategic airline alliances

With increased liberalisation in major air transport markets, the intensity of competition has increased amongst air carriers. Airlines have responded to the competitive pressures in many ways, one of which has been the formation of alliances. These alliances are linkages between the firms at various operational levels. They go beyond the common interlining agreement to encompass certain marketing and cost-reducing features. However, the question is how the success of these alliances can be ensured? While companies' culture compatibility is important and much has been written in that area, this paper focuses on factors that affect operational success of airline alliances. The operational success is measured by the change in the level of partners' inter-hub traffic due to formation of the alliance. This research has developed a methodology which could be used as a management tool to measure alliances' operational success before embarking on such agreements. The analysis of recent major alliances covering 52 inter-hub routes suggests that the main factors ensuring the alliances' operational success are: the partners' network size and their compatibility, the frequency of service between the hubs of the partners, the flight connection time at the hub and the level of competition on their network.

Conservation of energy in the urban passenger sector: A general principle and some proposals

We are faced by a large number of competing proposals for energy conservation, and this paper proposes a straightforward principle for choosing among them: “The Law of Large Proportions.” The Law is a simple one—The Biggest Components Matter Most—but it has been largely ignored by much of the government-formulated energy policy so far.The paper applies the Law to the urban transportation sector, and concludes that the major hope for conserving transportation energy is to drop our preoccupation with public transit and, instead, to concentrate on the goal of “civilizing” the automobile. The paper, then, proposes three ideas that might accomplish this: two different ways of promoting the sale of fuel-efficient vehicles, and one way of improving the efficiency of the existing vehicle fleet.     

The role of attitude structures,direct experience and reframing for the success of congestion pricing

Congestion pricing was introduced in Stockholm in 2006, first as a trial followed by a referendum, and permanently from 2007. Public attitudes to the charges became more negative during the period from the decision to the start of the system. Once the trial started, public attitudes became dramatically more positive over the following years, going from 2/3 against the charges to more than 2/3 in favor of the charges. Self-reported changes in behavior and attitudes considerably underestimate actual changes: about 3/4 of the decrease in car trips and more than half of the change in attitudes seem to have gone unnoticed by respondents, ex post. Self-interest and belief in the charges’ effectiveness strongly affect attitudes at any given point in time, but can only explain a minor part of the change in attitudes. I suggest that the debate and the shift in attitudes can be understood as a public and political reframing of the congestion charges over time.     

How the longer term success of a social marketing program is influenced by socio-demographics and the built environment

Urban sprawl is pervasive in Australian cities arising from the low density development of dwellings with the consequence that private vehicle use dominates daily travel in Australia. This paper examines a community based social marketing program, TravelSmart, which targeted reducing vehicle kilometres travelled as part of a transport demand management strategy. This paper uses 3-year panel data collected by GPS tracking and a conventional survey methodology in northern Adelaide, South Australia, to examine whether TravelSmart had a sustained impact and whether this was impacted by socio-economic and built-environment factors. A latent growth model is employed and demonstrates TravelSmart led to a declining trend in private car driving over the 3 years at both individual and household levels with effects being sustained beyond 1 year and up to 2 years. There is some evidence of compensatory behaviour between household members. Socio-demographic factors are significant with males decreasing their driving times faster than females. Built environment impacts were also significant with different levels of walkability showing different trajectories in the reduction of car trips after the implementation of TravelSmart, suggesting social marketing interventions work better when supported by hard policies such as a supportive built environment.
