This note presents the author's conjectures on several symptoms raised in Kitamura's assessment of activity-based travel analysis. It focuses on some of the characteristics of the development of activity-based approaches that may help explain their limited impact to date on travel demand forecasting practice. This paper applies the relatively new method of latent class transition analysis to explore the notion that qualitative differences in travel behavior patterns are substantively meaningful and therefore relevant from explanatory point of view. For example, because the bicycle may function as an important access and egress mode, a car user who also (occasionally) uses the bicycle may be more likely to switch to a public transit profile than someone who only uses the car. Data from the Dutch mobility panel are used to inductively reveal travel behavior patterns and model transitions in these patterns over time. Additionally, the effects of seven exogenous variables, including two important life events (i.e. moving house and changing jobs), on cluster membership and the transition probabilities are assessed. The results show that multiple-mode users compared to single-mode users are more likely to switch from one behavioral profile to another. In addition, age, the residential environment, moving house and changing jobs have strong influences on the transition probabilities between the revealed behavioral patterns over time. 相似文献

A review of the state of the art in designing samples for discrete choice analysis of traveller behavior is presented. The basic discrete choice analysis framework is reviewed. It is assumed that any sample used is drawn by a process termed stratified sampling, in which the analyst partitions the population based on attributes and choices made, and then selects the fraction of observations taken within each stratum and the total sample size. Observations within strata are drawn at random. Two related problems, determining the distribution of the attributes in the population and estimating the choice probabilities condititional on the attributes, are explored. Various procedures for solving both these problems are detailed. The role of experimentation in extending the range of attributes in the population is explored. 相似文献

The travel behavior of passengers from the transportation hub within the city area is critical for travel demand analysis, security monitoring, and supporting traffic facilities designing. However, the traditional methods used to study the travel behavior of the passengers inside the city are time and labor consuming. The records of the cellular communication provide a potential huge data source for this study to follow the movement of passengers. This study focuses on the passengers’ travel behavior of the Hongqiao transportation hub in Shanghai, China, utilizing the mobile phone data. First, a systematic and novel method is presented to extract the trip information from the mobile phone data. Several key travel characteristics of passengers, including passengers traveling inside the city and between cities, are analyzed and compared. The results show that the proposed method is effective to obtain the travel trajectories of mobile phone users. Besides, the travel behavior of incity passengers and external passengers are quite different. Then, the correlation analysis of the passengers’ travel trajectories is provided to research the availability of the comprehensive area. Moreover, the results of the correlation analysis further indicate that the comprehensive area of the Hongqiao hub plays a relatively important role in passengers’ daily travel. 相似文献

Accompanying the widespread use of the Internet, the popularity of e-commerce is growing in developing countries such as China. Online shopping has significant effects on in-store shopping and on other personal activity travel behavior such as leisure activities and trip chaining behavior. Using data collected from a GPS-based activity travel diary in the Shangdi area of Beijing, this paper investigates the relationships between online shopping, in-store shopping and other dimensions of activity travel behavior using a structural equation modelling framework. Our results show that online buying frequency has positive effects on the frequencies of both in-store shopping and online searching, and in-store shopping frequency positively affects the frequency of online searching. Frequent online purchasers tend to shop in stores on weekends rather than weekdays. We also found a negative effect of online buying on the frequency of leisure activities, indicating that online shopping may reduce out-of-home leisure trips. 相似文献

Dynamic characteristics of travel behavior are analyzed in this paper using weekly travel diaries from two waves of panel surveys conducted six months apart. An analysis of activity engagement indicates the presence of significant regularity in weekly activity participation between the two waves. The analysis also shows a general lack of association between regularity in activity participation and change in person and household attributes, suggesting the presence of behavioral inertia or response lags. It is further shown that observed trip rates do not exhibit patterns that would be observed if travel behavior had no response lag and no history dependence. The results point to the needs for models that are capable of representing these aspects of travel behavior. 相似文献

Models of individual choice behavior have been extensively developed and used in travel prediction during the last ten years. These models are generally formulated with utility functions that are linear in parameters. Theories of economics and psychology suggest that the true relationship between service variables and utility is non-linear. In this paper we demonstrate that non-linear transformations of time and cost variables produce statistically significant improvements in the model estimated, have a theoretically appealing interpretation, and lead to managerially important differences in policy evaluations. These results support the need to refine the specification of choice utility functions based on theoretical considerations and empirical research. 相似文献

In this paper, we present a validation of public transport origin–destination (OD) matrices obtained from smartcard and GPS data. These matrices are very valuable for management and planning but have not been validated until now. In this work, we verify the assumptions and results of the method using three sources of information: the same database used to make the estimations, a Metro OD survey in which the card numbers are registered for a group of users, and a sample of volunteers. The results are very positive, as the percentages of correct estimation are approximately 90% in all cases. 相似文献

In the next few years there is likely to be a large growth of interest in the dynamic modelling of travel behaviour. In order to try to avoid the eventual collapse of enthusiasm which has sometimes occurred with other new developments when they turn out not to provide transport planning with the hoped-for panacea, this paper aims to demonstrate the diversity of approaches which will be required to tackle the subject of dynamics. In particular, it identifies three overlapping but distinct levels at which dynamics interact with travel behaviour — microdynamics, which is concerned with the detailed scheduling of activities and travel within a day — macrodynamic modifiers, whereby changes in medium- and long-term behaviour which are often considered to be instantaneous are in fact subject to important phasing considerations — and macrodynamic processes, which deal with the overriding demographic processes of birth, ageing and death. Recent advances in agent-based micro-simulation modeling have further highlighted the importance of a thorough full synthetic population procedure for guaranteeing the correct characterization of real-world populations and underlying travel demands. In this regard, we propose an integrated approach including Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation and profiling-based methods to capture the behavioral complexity and the great heterogeneity of agents of the true population through representative micro-samples. The population synthesis method is capable of building the joint distribution of a given population with its corresponding marginal distributions using either full or partial conditional probabilities or both of them simultaneously. In particular, the estimation of socio-demographic or transport-related variables and the characterization of daily activity-travel patterns are included within the framework. The fully probabilistic structure based on Markov Chains characterizing this framework makes it innovative compared to standard activity-based models. Moreover, data stemming from the 2010 Belgian Household Daily Travel Survey (BELDAM) are used to calibrate the modeling framework. We illustrate that this framework effectively captures the behavioral heterogeneity of travelers. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the proposed framework is adequately adapted to meeting the demand for large-scale micro-simulation scenarios of transportation and urban systems. 相似文献

Reliability of travel modes was found to be the most important characteristic of transportation systems in several attitudinal investigations of individual travel behavior. This paper represents the first part of a research effort aimed at gaining a better understanding of the characteristics of reliability of transportation modes in urban travel. In this research, reliability characteristics are identified; their importance relative to each other is assessed, and an insight into possible structure of an objective reliability index is discussed. This study examines the journey to work as a multiple-purpose trip (home-to-home circuit). Using disaggregate travel diary data collected over 35 consecutive days, the study shows the importance of the multi-purpose work trip in the overall travel pattern of the urban household. A large proportion of many households' total travel is undertaken in conjunction with the journey to and from work. The paper also examines the nature of these work-induced travel linkages and finds that many types of urban establishments depend heavily upon stops made in connection with the work trip. In fact, there is a group of urban functions that have stronger travel links with the workplace than with the home or with any other type of urban establishment. The study examines the implications of the multi-purpose journey to work for policies regarding mode use and the viability of centrally-located urban functions. 相似文献

Day-to-day variability in individuals' travel behavior (intrapersonal variability) has been recognized in conceptual discussions, yet the analysis and modeling of urban travel are typically based on a single day record of each individual's travel. This paper develops and examines hypotheses regarding the determinants of intrapersonal variability in urban travel behavior.Two general hypotheses are formulated to describe the effects of motivations for travel and related behavior and of travel and related constraints on intrapersonal variability in weekday urban travel behavior. Specific hypotheses concerning the effect of various sociodemographic characteristics on intrapersonal variability are derived from these general hypotheses. These specific hypotheses are tested empirically in the context of daily trip frequency using a five-day record of travel in Reading, England.The empirical result support the two general hypotheses. First, individuals who have fewer economic and role-related constraints have higher levels of intrapersonal variability in their daily trip frequency.
