Most existing dynamic origin–destination (O–D) estimation approaches are grounded on the assumption that a reliable initial O–D set is available and traffic volume data from detectors are accurate. However, in most traffic systems, both types of critical information are either not available or subjected to some level of measurement errors such as traffic counts and speed measurement from sensors. To contend with those critical issues, this study presents two robust algorithms, one for estimation of an initial O–D set and the other for tackling the input measurement errors with an extended estimation algorithm. The core concept of the initial O–D estimation algorithm is to decompose the target network in a number of sub-networks based on proposed rules, and then execute the estimation of the initial O–D set iteratively with the observable information at the first time interval. To contend with the inevitable detector measurement error, this study proposes an interval-based estimation algorithm that converts each model input data as an interval with its boundaries being set based on some prior knowledge. The performance of both proposed algorithms has been tested with a simulated system, the I-95 freeway corridor between I-495 and I-695, and the results are quite promising.  相似文献

Several urban traffic models make the convenient assumption that turning probabilities are independent, meaning that the probability of turning right (or left or going straight through) at the downstream intersection is the same for all travelers on that roadway, regardless of their origin or destination. In reality most travelers make turns according to planned routes from origins to destinations. The research reported here identifies and quantifies the deviations that result from this assumption of independent turning probabilities. An analysis of this type requires a set of reasonably realistic “original” route flows, which were obtained by a static user-equilibrium traffic assignment and an entropy maximization condition for most likely route flows. These flows are compared with those route flows resulting from the Assumption of Independent Turning Probabilities (ITP). A small subnetwork of 3 km by 5 km in Tucson, Arizona, was chosen as a case study. An overall “typical ratio” of 2.2 between original route flows and ITP route flows was obtained. Aggregating route flows to origin–destination flows led to an overall “typical ratio” of 1.7. Such deviations are particularly high for routes that go back-and-forth, reaching a ratio of more than 3 in certain time periods. Substantial deviations for origins and destinations that are on the same border of the subnetwork are also observed in the analyses. In addition, under the ITP assumption, morning rush hour traffic peaking is the same in all directions, while in the original flows some directions do not exhibit a peak in the morning rush hour period. Overall, the conclusion of the paper is that the assumption of independent turning probabilities leads to substantial deviations both at the route level and at the origin–destination level, even for such a small network of the case study. These deviations are particularly detrimental when a network is being modeled and studied for route-based measures of effectiveness such as the number and types of routes passing a point – for monitoring specified vehicles and/or managing detouring strategies.  相似文献

This paper presents an alternative planning framework to model and forecast network traffic for planning applications in small communities, where limited resources debilitate the development and applications of the conventional four-step travel demand forecasting model. The core idea is to use the Path Flow Estimator (PFE) to estimate current and forecast future traffic demand while taking into account of various field and planning data as modeling constraints. Specifically, two versions of PFE are developed: a base year PFE for estimating the current network traffic conditions using field data and planning data, if available, and a future year PFE for predicting future network traffic conditions using forecast planning data and the estimated base year origin–destination trip table as constraints. In the absence of travel survey data, the proposed method uses similar data (traffic counts and land use data) as a four-step model for model development and calibration. Since the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) trip generation rates and Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) are both utilized in the modeling process, the analysis scope and results are consistent with those of common traffic impact studies and other short-range, localized transportation improvement programs. Solution algorithms are also developed to solve the two PFE models and integrated into a GIS-based software called Visual PFE. For proof of concept, two case studies in northern California are performed to demonstrate how the tool can be used in practice. The first case study is a small community of St. Helena, where the city’s planning department has neither an existing travel demand model nor the budget for developing a full four-step model. The second case study is in the city of Eureka, where there is a four-step model developed for the Humboldt County that can be used for comparison. The results show that the proposed approach is applicable for small communities with limited resources.  相似文献

The uncertainty of an origin-destination (O-D) trip table estimate is affected by two factors: (i) the multiplicity of solutions due to the underspecified nature of the problem, and (ii) the errors of traffic counts. In this paper, a confidence interval estimation procedure for path flow estimator (PFE) is developed for assessing the quality of O-D trip tables estimated from traffic counts. The confidence interval estimation consists of two parts: (i) a generalized demand scale (GDS) measure for quantifying the intrinsic underspecified nature of the O-D estimation problem at various spatial levels, and (ii) an error bound to quantify the contribution of input errors (traffic counts) to the estimation results. Numerical results using PFE as the O-D estimator show that the proposed confidence interval estimation procedure is able to separate the two sources of uncertainty in constructing the confidence intervals at various spatial levels. Simulation results also confirm that the proposed quality measure indeed contain the true estimates within the defined confidence intervals.  相似文献

The paper develops a forecasting model of emissions from traffic flows embracing the dynamics of driving behavior due to variations in payload. To measure of emissions at the level of individual vehicles under varying payloads a portable emission measurement system is used. This paper reports on a model based on data at the level of individual vehicles for a representative road trajectory. The model aggregates the data to the level of a homogeneous flow dependent of velocity and specific power, which is dependent on payload weight. We find a lean specification for the model that provides emission factors for CO2, NOx, HC, CO, and NO2. The results indicate that, in comparison with earlier models, NOx emissions in particular tend to be underestimated.  相似文献

There is significant current interest in the development of models to describe the day-to-day evolution of traffic flows over a network. We consider the problem of statistical inference for such models based on daily observations of traffic counts on a subset of network links. Like other inference problems for network-based models, the critical difficulty lies in the underdetermined nature of the linear system of equations that relates link flows to the latent path flows. In particular, Bayesian inference implemented using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods requires that we sample from the set of route flows consistent with the observed link flows, but enumeration of this set is usually computationally infeasible. We show how two existing conditional route flow samplers can be adapted and extended for use with day-to-day dynamic traffic. The first sampler employs an iterative route-by-route acceptance–rejection algorithm for path flows, while the second employs a simple Markov model for traveller behaviour to generate candidate entire route flow patterns when the network has a tree structure. We illustrate the application of these methods for estimation of parameters that describe traveller behaviour based on daily link count data alone.  相似文献

Estimation of intersection turning movements is one of the key inputs required for a variety of transportation analysis, including intersection geometric design, signal timing design, traffic impact assessment, and transportation planning. Conventional approaches that use manual techniques for estimation of turning movements are insensitive to congestion. The drawbacks of the manual techniques can be amended by integrating a network traffic model with a computation procedure capable of estimating turning movements from a set of link traffic counts and intersection turning movement counts. This study proposes using the path flow estimator, originally used to estimate path flows (hence origin–destination flows), to derive not only complete link flows, but also turning movements for the whole road network given some counts at selected roads and intersections. Two case studies using actual traffic counts are used to demonstrate the proposed intersection turning movement estimation procedure. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A macroscopic model for dynamic traffic flow is presented. The main goal of the model is the real time simulation of large freeway networks with multiple sources and sinks. First, we introduce the model in its discrete formulation and consider some of its properties. It turns out, that our non-hydrodynamical ansatz for the flows results in a very advantageous behavior of the model. Next the fitting conditions at junctions of a traffic network are discussed. In the following sections we carry out a continuous approximation of our discrete model in order to derive stationary solutions and to consider the stability of the homogeneous one. It turns out, that for certain conditions unstable traffic flow occurs. In a subsequent section, we compare the stability of the discrete model and the corresponding continuous approximation. This confirms in retrospection the close similarities of both model versions. Finally we compare the results of our model with the results of another macroscopic model, that was recently suggested by Kerner and Konhäuser [Phys. Rev. E 48, 2335–2338 (1993)].  相似文献

Abstract

The context for network modelling in traffic management and control is described in terms of the current area‐wide nature of traffic management and the range of objectives to which it can contribute. Representation of a road system and traffic management measures in terms of nodes and links and parameters associated with them is described. It is shown that the pattern of traffic has to be represented not only in terms of flows on links of the network but also in terms of numbers of movements per unit time between points of entry to and points of exit from the area being modelled. In modelling so far, these numbers of movements are regarded as given, but the routes taken are estimated by traffic assignment. Models can so far be used for comparison of a range of given schemes and for optimization of traffic control within a scheme. Variation over time is a central feature of the modelling, and this requires the use of time‐dependent queueing theory, and the specification of numbers of movements for a succession of periods of between 10 and 30 minutes. Theoretical approaches to the resulting problems of modelling and optimization are discussed, and the ways in which these are supplemented by heuristic methods in currently available models is described. Some requirements‐for further research are outlined.  相似文献

The paper proposes an efficient algorithm for determining the stochastic user equilibrium solution for logit-based loading. The commonly used Method of Successive Averages typically has a very slow convergence rate. The new algorithm described here uses Williams’ result [ Williams, (1977) On the formation of travel demand models and economic evaluation measures of user benefit. Environment and Planning 9A(3), 285–344] which enables the expected value of the perceived travel costs Srs to be readily calculated for any flow vector x. This enables the value of the Sheffi and Powell, 1982 objective function [Sheffi, Y. and Powell, W. B. (1982) An algorithm for the equilibrium assignment problem with random link times. Networks 12(2), 191–207], and its gradient in any specified search direction, to be calculated. It is then shown how, at each iteration, an optimal step length along the search direction can be easily estimated, rather than using the pre-set step lengths, thus giving much faster convergence. The basic algorithm uses the standard search direction (towards the auxiliary solution). In addition the performance of two further versions of the algorithm are investigated, both of which use an optimal step length but alternative search directions, based on the Davidon–Fletcher–Powell function minimisation method. The first is an unconstrained and the second a constrained version. Comparisons are made of all three versions of the algorithm, using a number of test networks ranging from a simple three-link network to one with almost 3000 links. It is found that for all but the smallest network the version using the standard search direction gives the fastest rate of convergence. Extensions to allow for multiple user classes and elastic demand are also possible.  相似文献

Information on link flows in a vehicular traffic network is critical for developing long-term planning and/or short-term operational management strategies. In the literature, most studies to develop such strategies typically assume the availability of measured link traffic information on all network links, either through manual survey or advanced traffic sensor technologies. In practical applications, the assumption of installed sensors on all links is generally unrealistic due to budgetary constraints. It motivates the need to estimate flows on all links of a traffic network based on the measurement of link flows on a subset of links with suitably equipped sensors. This study, addressed from a budgetary planning perspective, seeks to identify the smallest subset of links in a network on which to locate sensors that enables the accurate estimation of traffic flows on all links of the network under steady-state conditions. Here, steady-state implies that the path flows are static. A “basis link” method is proposed to determine the locations of vehicle sensors, by using the link-path incidence matrix to express the network structure and then identifying its “basis” in a matrix algebra context. The theoretical background and mathematical properties of the proposed method are elaborated. The approach is useful for deploying long-term planning and link-based applications in traffic networks.  相似文献

This paper reports upon a survey of traffic noise annoyance in three residential districts of Trinidad, West Indies. Householder perceptions were solicited by means of a questionnaire survey and direct measurements of traffic noise levels were taken. The results were compared with surveys elsewhere. It was concluded that household status had little effect on annoyance perception, that at L10 levels greater than 70 dB(A) at a dwelling facade the noise level is unacceptable. L10 levels less than 65 dB(A) at the building facade are not perceived as annoying in the environment considered.  相似文献

This paper presents a novel user-equilibrium (UE) traffic assignment algorithm, which under conventional assumptions, promises to compute UE arc flows to acceptable precision, regardless of the network’s topology, size or congestion:
• The algorithm takes the simple approach of shifting flow from a costliest path to a cheapest path until the costs of all used paths are within a given of the cheapest.
• Because of being path-based, it avoids tailing.
• In spite of being path-based, it neither stores nor enumerates paths.
• These efficiencies derive from decomposing the problem into a sequence of easy single-origin problems on acyclic sub-networks.
Solutions to this sequence of sub-network flows converge rapidly to a sharp practical estimate of UE arc flows—as is amply demonstrated by tests using the Chicago region’s 40,000-arc network model.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the existence of the simultaneous route-and-departure choice dynamic user equilibrium (SRDC-DUE) in continuous time, first formulated as an infinite-dimensional variational inequality in Friesz et al. (1993). In deriving our existence result, we employ the generalized Vickrey model (GVM) introduced in Han et al., 2013a, Han et al., 2013b to formulate the underlying network loading problem. As we explain, the GVM corresponds to a path delay operator that is provably strongly continuous on the Hilbert space of interest. Finally, we provide the desired SRDC-DUE existence result for general constraints relating path flows to a table of fixed trip volumes without invocation of a priori bounds on the path flows.  相似文献

Traffic counts on network links constitute an information source on travel demand which is easy to collect, cheap and repeatable. Many models proposed in recent years deal with the use of traffic counts to estimate Origin/Destination (O/D) trip matrices under different assumptions on the type of "a-priori" information available on the demand (surveys, outdated estimates, models, etc.) and the type of network and assignment mapping (see Cascetta & Nguyen 1988). Less attention has been paid to the possibility of using traffic counts to estimate the parameters of demand models. In this case most of the proposed methods are relative to particular demand model structures (e.g. gravity-type) and the statistical analysis of estimator performance is not thoroughly carried out. In this paper a general statistical framework defining Maximum Likelihood, Non Linear Generalized Least Squares (NGLS) and Bayes estimators of aggregated demand model parameters combining counts-based information with other sources (sample or a priori estimates) is proposed first, thus extending and generalizing previous work by the authors (Cascetta & Russo 1992). Subsequently a solution algorithm of the projected-gradient type is proposed for the NGLS estimator given its convenient theoretical and computational properties. The algorithm is based on a combination of analytical/numerical derivates in order to make the estimator applicable to general demand models. Statistical performances of the proposed estimators are evaluated on a small test network through a Monte Carlo method by repeatedly sampling "starting estimates" of the (known) parameters of a generation/distribution/modal split/assignment system of models. Tests were carried out assuming different levels of "quality" of starting estimates and numbers of available counts. Finally NGLS estimator was applied to the calibration of the described model system on the network of a real medium-size Italian town using real counts with very satisfactory results in terms of both parameter values and counted flows reproduction.  相似文献

A new traffic noise prediction approach based on a probability distribution model of vehicle noise emissions and achieved by Monte Carlo simulation is proposed in this paper. The probability distributions of the noise emissions of three types of vehicles are obtained using an experimental method. On this basis, a new probability statistical model for traffic noise prediction on free flow roads and control flow roads is established. The accuracy of the probability statistical model is verified by means of a comparison with the measured data, which has shown that the calculated results of Leq, L10, L50, L90, and the probability distribution of noise level occurrence agree well with the measurements. The results demonstrate that the new method can avoid the complicated process of traffic flow simulation but still maintain high accuracy for the traffic noise prediction.  相似文献

With road traffic in Europe forecast to increase, strategies are needed to keep transportation sector growth within the bounds imposed by a sustainable development. Research is contributing through a large number of projects dealing with transport–environment interactions. This paper reviews international research activities in this field, focusing on technological innovations, air and noise pollution prediction models, and existing tools for socioeconomic evaluation of traffic impacts on the environment. In particular, research projects of the Second Special Project on Transport (PFT2) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) are outlined.  相似文献

Partly because of counting errors and partly because counts may be carried out on different days, traffic counts on links of a network are unlikely to satisfy the flow conservation constraint “flow IN = flow out” at every node of the network. Van Zuylen and Willumsen (1980) have described a method of eliminating inconsistencies in traffic counts when a single count is available for each link in the network. In this paper, the method is extended to the case when more than one count is available on some links of the network. In addition, an algorithm is described for application of the method.  相似文献

The article describes a criterion based on functional, environmental and economic aspects for comparing conventional roundabouts with innovative one- or two-level roundabouts. We compared the performances of eight roundabout types, differing in geometric layout, number of lanes and traffic flow regulation from each other, with regard to vehicle delays and CO2, NOx, PM2.5 and PM10 pollutant emissions. Recently-designed roundabouts – target roundabouts and flyover roundabouts – have also been studied for their undoubted practical interest. By means of closed-form capacity models and CORINAIR methodology, several traffic simulations were carried out to examine a typical annual traffic demand curve in a suburban context, three different distribution test matrices for traffic flows (ρ1, ρ2, ρ3) and maximum annual traffic flow values Qmax ranging between 1300 and 3300 veh/h.Estimating vehicle delays and annual pollutant emissions, along with construction and management costs, allowed obtaining overall costs for each roundabout examined, in function of traffic demand and several other parameters. Thanks to these analyses, we identified the roundabout types which best suit to each traffic condition.  相似文献
