Driver drowsiness is a major safety concern, especially among commercial vehicle drivers, and is responsible for thousands
of accidents and numerous fatalities every year. The design of a drowsiness detection system is based on identifying suitable
driver-related and/or vehicle-related variables that are correlated to the driver’s level of drowsiness. Among different candidates,
vehicle control variables seem to be more promising since they are unobtrusive, easy to implement, and cost effective. This
paper focuses on in-depth analysis of different driver-vehicle control variables, e.g., steering angle, lane keeping, etc.
that are correlated with the level of drowsiness. The goal is to find relationships and to characterize the effect of a driver’s
drowsiness on measurable vehicle or driving variables and set up a framework for developing a drowsiness detection system.
Several commercial drivers were tested in a simulated environment and different variables were recorded. This study shows
that drowsiness has a major impact on lane keeping and steering control behavior. The correlation of the number and type of
accidents with the level of drowsiness was also examined. Significant patterns in lateral position variations and steering
corrections were observed, and two phases of drowsiness-related degradation in steering control were identified. The two steering

Particular safety problems relate to traffic on local streets. Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) schemes are often implemented with the objective of counteracting these safety problems. One analytical difficulty in appraising the effectiveness of LATM in dealing with safety problems has been the ‘footloose’ nature of accident locations in a local street network. Seldom are there distinct ‘blackspot’ locations. An area‐wide approach is needed and the interaction between the system and arterial road network must be considered. The paper describes the development of a Safety Evaluation Method for Local Area Traffic Management (termed SELATM). It is a GIS‐based program for analysing accident patterns over time and the evaluation of the safety benefits of LATM schemes. The evaluation is perform at different network levels for various accident variables. The thrust of the program involved the integration of network data with data on accidents and the installed devices to generate summary accident statistics for the various network levels allowing for before and after comparison with a control area. In this paper we discuss the specification, covariance structure, estimation, identification, and point-estimate analysis of a logit model with endogenous latent attributes that avoids problems of inconsistency. We show first that the total error term induced by the stochastic latent attributes is heteroskedastic and nonindependent. In addition, we show that the exact identification conditions support the two-stage analysis found in much current work. Second, we set up a Monte Carlo experiment where we compare the finite-sample performance of the point estimates of two alternative methods of estimation, namely frequentist full information maximum simulated likelihood and Bayesian Metropolis Hastings-within-Gibbs sampling. The Monte Carlo study represents a virtual case of travel mode choice. Even though the two estimation methods we analyze are based on different philosophies, both the frequentist and Bayesian methods provide estimators that are asymptotically equivalent. Our results show that both estimators are feasible and offer comparable results with a large enough sample size. However, the Bayesian point estimates outperform maximum likelihood in terms of accuracy, statistical significance, and efficiency when the sample size is low. 相似文献

The appropriate interpretation of a behavioural outcome requires allowing for risk attitude and belief of an individual, in addition to identification of preferences. This paper develops an Attribute-Specific Extended Rank-Dependent Utility Theory model to better understand choice behaviour in the presence of travel time variability, in which these three important components of choice are empirically addressed. This framework is more behaviourally appealing for travel time and travel time variability research than the traditional approach in which risk attitude and belief are overlooked. This model also reveals significant unobserved between-individual heterogeneity in preferences, risk attitudes and beliefs. 相似文献

Singapore's Land Transport Authority, formed in 1995, set itself a mission of producing a world class transport system. This paper assesses the extent to which this goal is being achieved. It outlines the structure within which transport decisions are taken and indicates the freedom this gives to develop integrated transport and land‐use strategies. It demonstrates the long‐term stability in transport strategy from 1972 onwards, and the key contributions to that strategy of land‐use controls and travel‐demand management measures. The individual elements of the strategy are then reviewed and innovations identified in demand management, public transport service provision and information technology. Finally, the key attributes that have led to the success of the strategy are identified, and it is suggested that many of these are transferable to other cities of the developed world. 相似文献

Developing countries have unique problems and needs which must be considered when attempting to identify and evaluate the environmental impacts of land transport. This paper presents a review of the relevant literature that can be used to identify, evaluate and mitigate environmental impacts of land transport facilities (development and operation) in developing countries. After examining the relevant characteristics of land transport development in such countries, the paper discusses the environmental effects. Controls and countermeasures associated with each category of impacts are also reviewed under the broad categories of air, noise and water pollution as well as land use changes and social and ecological impacts. Issues concerning environmental impact assessment/analysis process and transport of hazardous materials are then addressed. The procedures established by the World Bank for the environmental assessment of Bank‐financed projects are mentioned. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the responsibilities of the developing countries in meeting the growing challenge of environmental degradation. 相似文献

The growth of container‐handling industry and its impact on Hong Kong's economy have aroused considerable attention in recent decades. Within the recent twenty years, the rapid growth of container‐handling industry has led Hong Kong to become one of the world's busiest container port with over 11 million T.E.U. s (Twenty Feet Equivalent Units) container throughput in one year period. Also the container throughput is expected to reach 15.5 million T.E.U. s by year 2004. As the success of container‐handling industry is significant, many studies have been conducted relating to this subject. In this paper, an application of a queuing theory model to Kwai Chung Container Terminals is developed and described. Specifically, we consider seasonal changes at the Terminals and focus on their effects on inter‐arrival time and service time of container vessel. A crucial component of the study relates to the empirical data collected. Besides verifying the validity of the model, those data provide guidelines for developing schemes to manage the seasonal fluctuation of container throughput of the Terminals. 相似文献

A mathematical model of a rapid transit system has been developed. The model employs computer techniques to simulate the physical system. To further enhance the results and gain management confidence in the reliability and validity of the design of the model, a TV‐like display of the computer results enables the viewer to “see” the performance of the model as it happens. The results displayed thus include: The track layout, time (simulation), train position on the track, and the number of passengers riding on each train and waiting at each platform or station.
