Convergence of the Frank-Wolfe method for certain bounded variable traffic assignment problems

In two recent papers published in Transportation Research, Daganzo presented a modification of the Frank-Wolfe algorithm to solve certain link capacitated traffic assignment problems satisfying certain conditions. In order to show convergence of the modified algorithm, the assumption was made that the integral of the volume delay formula for each link tends to infinity as the link flow approaches the link capacity. In this paper we give a Theorem which establishes convergence of the modified algorithm under much weaker conditions. This result is then used to show convergence if the objective function of the assignment model is sufficiently large (not necessarily infinite) when the link flows are at capacity. Thus the modified method is applicable to a broader class of assignment problems. Two numerical examples illustrate (a) when the method converges and when it does not, and (b) that our Theorem provides a weaker condition for convergence of the method.     

Control Behaviour of Motorcycle Riders

The control behaviour of motorcycle riders is studied by means of a simulation model for the ridermotorcycle system, which stresses the control actions of the riders. The rider model describes the major steering torque control as well as the rider's own body control actions. This simulation model is applied to a single lane change maneuver and the results of this simulation are compared with the experiments in order to examine its validity.     

Dynamic Interactions Between Travelling Vehicles and Guideway Systems

The technical state-of-the-art of ground transportation vehicles interacting with flexible, perturbed guideway systems is reviewed with emphasis on high-speed passenger-carrying systems. Currently available modelling, analysis, and simulation techniques as well as parametric results illustrating the dominant interaction dynamics are summarized. Experimental studies and correlations of field data with analytical results are described and areas in which further research is required are identified.     

The economic use of subsidies for urban mass transportation

The energy crisis and various urban problems stemming from auto congestion, pollution, and the cost of providing public highways have created enormous interest in revitalizing our urban mass transit systems. Currently much is being said and written regarding the efficacy of granting federal, state and/or local operating subsidies. In this article, the author reviews the transit industry's peak capacity problem, and questions the economic wisdom of providing operating subsidies, as some are now being provided, and how most will probably be administered in the near future. An alternative plan suggests the manner in which subsidies can eventually help the transit industry. The article concludes with an analysis of what research efforts are needed in many urban transit systems and how subsidies can be used to support such research.     

Shipping control and the changing use of marine space

In this paper Professor Couper discusses the divisions of marine space as set out in the Revised Single Negotiating Text of UNCLOS III in relation to maritime accidents. This is followed by a contribution by Mr Burger on statistical material related to the incidence of marine accidents in North-West European waters. The third section of the paper by Captain S. Abdelgalil, is devoted to a technical discussion on traffic lanes in confined waters.     

Active Controls in Ground Transportation — A Review of the State-of-the-Art and Future Potential

Active control systems offer significant functional advantages over passive systems; their introduction into production-line vehicles, however, is cautious and slow. This survey describes the recent progress in the analysis, design and technology of active controls in vehicles. It includes the state-of-the-art of their introduction into operation as well as their future potential in view of recent advances in technology and computer aided design strategies. The survey has been limited to suspensions for vehicles on roads and tracks.     

Maritime language: quest for simplicity

This brief paper examines some of the problems of interpretation of documents and procedures given in English faced by non-English seafarers, and suggests the use of 'controlled' English to simplify these problems.
