It has been proposed that grade A should be replaced with a tougher steel for ship construction. This recommendation is not supported by casualty statistics. Brittle fractures have decreased from once every 10 ship years at the time of the Liberty ships, to once every 100 ship years in the 1950s, and now stand at around once every 10,000 ship years. The authors have developed a probabilistic fracture mechanics approach indexed to the Charpy 27 Joule temperature, T27J. This is used here to analyse the Liberty ship failures. Comparison with a databank of T27J values for grade A steel spanning 1920 to 1995 suggests that the Liberty ship steel was unusually brittle. The probability analysis shows good agreement between predicted and observed fracture casualty rates for the Liberty ships and helps explain why brittle fractures are now uncommon in grade A steel ships.  相似文献

This paper explores the influence of this occupation on alienation and social integration of its members. Data were collected using a survey instrument from a sample of 293 seamen, both officers and crew. Factors determining variance in levels of alienation are examined using multiple regression technique. Results indicate that variance in several occupational features of life at sea affect the degree of alienation experienced by seamen, and a number of social characteristics were found to mitigate these influences. Summary In this paper a sliding mode integral action controller and sliding mode observer are used to enhance vehicle stability in a split- µ manoeuvre. Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) have become an integral part of modern cars, and they have dramatically improved vehicle handling in braking manoeuvres. However, when a vehicle attempts to brake on a surface with uneven friction coefficient such as on wet or icy roads, a so-called split- µ scenario, the yaw moment generated by the asymmetric braking can prove demanding for an inexperienced driver. The controller presented hereworks in conjunction with a conventional ABS system to provide safe and effective braking through steer-by-wire. This paper extends previous state-feedback work by only using certain measurable quantities in the controller, estimating further signals by employing an observer.  相似文献

The accelerated service life testing of automotive vehicles for durability to road roughness induced dynamic loads is often accomplished in the laboratory using road roughness simulation facilities [1-5]. However, such tests can also be accomplished by a carefully designed field operation on a test course [6], where both the speed of the vehicle and the roughness of die test course become variables that control the degree of the test acceleration. Field tests are generally harder to control than laboratory tests, but offer a greater degree of realism since the vehicle is fully operational during the test exactly as it will be in service. This paper formulates the criteria for accelerated service life tests on a test course, evaluates the assumptions that must be enforced to obtain valid results, and explores the sensitivity of the results to the critical test parameters, namely, the vehicle speed and the road roughness severity of the test course relative to the service environment.  相似文献

In past years, the application of magnetorheological (MR) and electrorheological dampers in vehicle suspension has been widely studied, mainly for the purpose of vibration control. This paper presents theoretical study to identify an appropriate semi-active control method for MR-tracked vehicle suspension. Three representative control algorithms are simulated including the skyhook, hybrid and fuzzy-hybrid controllers. A seven degrees-of-freedom tracked vehicle suspension model incorporating MR dampers has been adopted for comparison between the performance of the three controllers. The model differential equations are derived based on Newton's second law of motion and the proposed control methods are developed. The performance of each control method under bump and sinusoidal road profiles for different vehicle speeds is simulated and compared with the performance of the conventional suspension system in time and frequency domains. The results show that the performance of tracked vehicle suspension with MR dampers is substantially improved. Moreover, the fuzzy-hybrid controller offers an excellent integrated performance in reducing the body accelerations as well as wheel bounce responses compared with the classical skyhook and hybrid controllers.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the way of keeping shift quality of automatic transmissions consistent in mass production and with mileage accumulation. We investigate the main factors influencing the consistency of shift quality. Test results show that the torque to pressure (T2P) and pressure to current (P2I) characteristics of shifting elements are easily affected. A simulation model of an 8-speed automatic transmission is established to simulate the dynamic process of clutch-to-clutch shift. Simulation results demonstrate that the change of T2P and P2I characteristics has a significant influence on shift quality. In order to compensate for the influences, we develop two adaptive control strategies, i.e., the adaptive control strategies for torque phase and inertia phase. They make use of the measured speed information and time information to evaluate shift quality. Then the control parameters are tuned to adapt to the change of T2P and P2I characteristics. Vehicle tests verify that the developed adaptive control strategies are effective to keep shift quality consistent in mass production and with mileage accumulation.  相似文献

The rapidly changing complexity of the Global War on Terrorism has changed the approach to equipping forward-deployed military forces. Combatant Commanders conducting operations now require timely materiel solutions to enhance mission capabilities and reduce the risk for individual soldiers. To address this challenge, the US Army established the Rapid Equipping Force to assess emerging requirements, to propose solutions to those requirements, and to implement those solutions in an expedient time frame. Unfortunately, the REF lacks a consistent analytical methodology for assessing alternative materiel solutions. To address the need for a human systems integration (HSI) analysis method, the authors developed an Assessment-Based Rapid Acquisition HSI Analysis Method (ABRAHAM) capable of generating tailored surveys and evaluating these surveys for unacceptable risks to soldiers. To validate ABRAHAM's concept and content, ABRAHAM was showcased in three Department of Defense settings: the Human Factors Engineering Technical Advisory Group, the REF, and the US Marine Corps' Operational Test and Evaluation Activity. The ABRAHAM appears to fill a gap in the current library of HSI tools. Based on the feedback provided during the product showcases, there is sufficient interest and technological maturity to further develop ABRAHAM to serve both the traditional and rapid acquisition processes.  相似文献

Addressing the issues of traffic safety in rural areas presents a constant challenge. The mix of light and heavy vehicles and the considerable differences in speed among these traffic participants result in high risks and delays for the faster vehicles. Agricultural vehicles (AVs) in particular have such an impact on traffic, especially when using arterial highways. This paper reviews the problems of safety and delays that AVs cause on arterial highways, and the appropriate mitigation. The concept of 'sustainable safety' in The Netherlands focuses on these problems, because of the proposed construction of parallel roads alongside all arterial highways. However, Dutch accident statistics cannot justify the high costs for the construction of parallel roads alongside 7000 km of arterial highways. Delays experienced by fast traffic are another reason for separating AVs from other road users with parallel roads. Alternative measures alongside the arterial highway, such as passing bays, restricting AVs to travelling at off-peak only and improving the conspicuity of the AVs, may be more cost-effective ways of reducing delays and/or improving traffic safety on arterial highways. Another solution may be to eliminate the need for AVs to use the arterial highway by altering their routes. For this purpose, land reallocation projects (as practised in Holland) can provide a useful tool.  相似文献
