A new mathematical formulation for the realization of nonlinear wave profiles and its nonlinear solution procedure, based
on the Banach fixed-point theorem, is proposed. To apply the formulation, a nonlinear equation for the Stokes wave in a finite
depth was derived, and some numerical solutions are given. A numerical study showed that the proposed iteration method, based
on linear progressive wave potential only, enabled us to realize the Stokes nonlinear wave profiles in a finite depth. The
nonlinear strategy of iteration has a very fast convergence rate, i.e., only about 6–10 iterations are required to obtain

Truck backhauling reduces empty truck-miles by having drivers haul loads on trips back to their home terminal. This paper 1) examines the impact on backhauling opportunities of terminal locations and directional imbalances in the flow of freight from the terminals, and 2) develops a method for determining which truckloads should be backhauled. Backhauling is studied for two terminals sending full truckloads to many customers under steady-state conditions. This research develops two backhauling models. The first is a continuous model that makes simplifying assumptions about customer locations and travel distances. It results in formulae showing that 1) savings from backhauling increase at a decreasing rate as the directional flow of freight between two terminals becomes more balanced and 2) backhauling is an important, but often ignored, factor in terminal (e.g. trucking terminal, warehouse, or plant) location and supplier selection decisions. The second model is a more general discrete model that determines which loads should be backhauled to minimize empty truck-miles. 相似文献

From 1986 to 1992, 125Sb released by the nuclear fuel reprocessing plant at La Hague has been used to study the transfer of waters from mid-Channel areas towards the Straits of Dover. Since 1940, these investigations have formed part of the MAST 53 FLUXMANCHE programme and have involved repeated measurements on a Straits of Dover transect. A discussion of the results is presented here which takes into account new information provided by a hydrodynamic model developed in the framework of FLUXMANCHE; it combines knowledge of the monthly fluxes of water trough the Straits of Dover and week-by-week simulation of the 125Sb activities of waters flowing in this aera. It is proposed that soluble radionuclides introduced into the central Channel are transferred towards the Straits of Dover over a time which varies from four to seven months depending on the route taken. 相似文献

This paper outlines an approach to complex spatio-temporal marine ecosystem modelling as applied to the North Western European Continental Shelf. The model presented here combines an eddy-permitting (approximately 6 km horizontal resolution) baroclinic model, the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory Coastal Ocean Modelling System (POLCOMS), with the European Regional Seas Ecosystem Model (ERSEM). This has been run within an operational framework using operationally available high resolution atmospheric and lateral boundary forcing, allowing hindcast and near-real time nowcast simulations to be performed. The modelled surface temperature and chlorophyll distributions are presented, and interannual variations discussed. Validation of both the physical and ecosystem submodels show the system to be effective, whilst highlighting areas where improvements in the system can be made. Distinct regional differences in predictive skill are shown. The system presented is ready for operational implementation to provide products and services for use both scientifically and in coastal zone and shelf seas management activities. The motions of an infinitely long, two-dimensional runway subjected to the dynamic moving load imposed by an airplane taking
off are investigated. The runway is assumed to be floating in an inviscid fluid and is initially at equilibrium before the
plane takes off. The deformation of the runway resulting from the take-off is wave-like and moves in the same direction as
the plane. The maximum drag occurs when the plane catches up with the first wave. Three different runway configurations were
considered: a baseline and ones which were ten and one hundred times more flexible than the baseline. For these runways, the
added drag to the aircraft was very small, ranging from 1% for the stiffest to 10% for the most flexible runway. 相似文献

This investigation discusses the dynamic characteristics of a full sized passenger automobile of the 5000-6000 lb weight class relative to Vehicle Handling, Performance and Ride Quality. Weight and moment of inertia parameters are introduced to modify weights and mass moment of inertia judicially and the dynamic behavior is investigated on the basis of the above mentioned criteria. Finally weight reductions at discrete locations along the vehicle length axis are contemplated and the dynamic behavior is determined relative to the above criteria. The new operational prototype of Mercator (french Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment contribution) is composed of a North Atlantic primitive equation ocean model OPA (Ocean Parallel Algorithm between 20°S and 70°N, [Madec, G., P. Benkiran (2002). “A multivariate reduced-order optimal interpolation method and its application in Mediterranean basin-scale circulation.” Ocean Forecasting : Conceptual basis and application, Pinardi, N., Springer Verlag.] This system has already given some significant improvements from previous Mercator configurations (M. Benkiran, personal communication). However some biases on ocean state still remain in the tropics where the reduced-order optimal interpolation scheme is suspected to be ill-parameted in the model forecast error. Indeed the guess error covariance matrix is decomposed into an error variance value and a spatio-temporal correlation function which are assumed to have some “good” properties (spatial homogeneity of the correlation function, constant ratio between signal and error variance). This study shows how we can use ensemble methods to validate these assumptions. We can see that the correlation function can reach negative values locally, mostly in regions of high variability contradictory with the homogeneous hypothesis. The reduced space used in the operational configuration is based on the signal seasonal Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOFs). An empirical relationship between signal and error variance has been set and the correlation function is the same on every dimension of the reduced space. By projection of the estimated guess error variance onto the reduced space, we find a repartition of this quantity quite different to what was set in the system. The error statistics is found to be inhomogeneous compared to hypothesis made in the assimilation scheme. These two new parameters tested separately in the assimilation scheme gives significant improvements of the forecast and analysis results. This is particularly obvious in the tropics. But relationship between signal and error statistics (as assumed in the optimal interpolation) is found to be complex. 相似文献
