This study presents a unified framework to understand the weekday recreational activity participation time-use of adults,
with an emphasis on the time expended in physically active recreation pursuits by location and by time-of-day. Such an analysis
is important for a better understanding of how individuals incorporate physical activity into their daily activities on a
typical weekday, and can inform the development of effective policy interventions to facilitate physical activity. Furthermore,
such a study of participation and time use in recreational activity episodes contributes to activity-based travel demand modeling,
since recreational activity participation comprises a substantial share of individuals’ total non-work activity participation.
The methodology employed here is the multiple discrete continuous extreme value (MDCEV) model, which provides a unified framework
to explicitly and endogenously examine time use by type, location, and timing. The data for the empirical analysis is drawn
from the 2000 Bay Area Travel Survey (BATS), supplemented with other secondary sources that provide information on physical
environment variables. To our knowledge, this is the first study to jointly address the issues of ‘where’, ‘when’ and ‘how
much’ individuals choose to participate in ‘what type of (recreational) activity’. 相似文献

Agent-based microsimulation models of transportation, land use or other socioeconomic processes require an initial synthetic
population derived from census data, conventionally created using the iterative proportional fitting (IPF) procedure. This
paper introduces a novel computational method that allows the synthesis of many more attributes and finer attribute categories
than previous approaches, both of which are long-standing limitations discussed in the literature. Additionally, a new approach
is used to fit household and person zonal attribute distributions simultaneously. This technique was first adopted to address
limitations specific to Canadian census data, but could also be useful in U.S. and other applications. The results of each

There is a growing interest in traveller behaviour research to explore alternative information processing strategies (often
referred to as heuristics or rules) adopted by individuals when assessing packages of attributes describing alternatives in
a choice set, and making a choice. One popular attribute processing rule relates to attributes not being considered (i.e.,
being ignored), for all manner of reasons, referred to in the small but growing literature as attribute non-attendance or
non-preservation. Researchers have used a mixture of methods to study the role of attribute non-attendance, including supplementary
questions on whether each attribute is ignored or not, and methods in which the functional form of the utility expressions
defining an alternative can recognise the possibility, up to a probability, of an attribute being ignored. Although supplementary
questions are worthy of further consideration, despite the controversy as to the reliability of the response, recent interest
has focused on ways to establish the incidence of attribute non-attendance without recourse to such evidence. In this paper
we use an existing data set of choice amongst four attributes describing alternative car non-commuting trips, to illustrate
the proposed method, and to compare values of travel time savings under each possible combination of non-attendance attributes
relative to a model in which all attributes are assumed to be fully attended to. The paper reveals a major concern with the
way that attribute levels and ranges are selected in the design of choice experiments, which can induce non-attendance situations

Beaches along the eastern branch of the Giens double tombolo are subject to coastal erosion. Prediction of the behavior of the beach profile configuration in response to natural and anthropogenic changes using the concept of equilibrium beach profile (EBP) could be useful in finding the most suitable measure to address the erosion problem. Field investigation data of 11 beaches along the eastern tombolo were supplied for this study, and a nonlinear fitting technique was applied to estimate the best parameter values of seven empirical formulations of the relevant EBP. All of the observed beach profiles could be described by a single function, but a single EBP was inadequate to represent all of the beach profiles observed. The variation found could be explained in terms of longshore variation of bathymetry, sediment size, and wave parameters. Analysis of the validity of the EBPs revealed that a representative EBP of each beach is governed by different equilibrium parameters. 相似文献

With the continuous advancement of (mobile) ICT devices and applications, their impact on travel, activities and time use becomes more diverse. This holds in particular for apps developed for mobile devices (smartphones). In this paper, we argue that the effect of ICT on travel and activities should be analysed at the level of a single specific device or application, rather than for broad classes of ICT devices. We propose activity theory as a framework to analyse the impact of smartphone apps on travel and activities. Activity theory describes how subjects apply tools (such as apps) to work on an object and achieve an outcome that is in line with the subject’s motive. The application of the tool is embedded in an activity system which includes a community, formal and informal rules and in which a division of labour exists. We apply activity theory to analyse the effects of Whatsapp and travel feedback apps, based on existing literature about these apps. The analyses suggest that the activity systems of each app differ greatly in terms of object, motive, outcomes, community and rules, with implications for their use and impact. Both apps have an impact on travel, but differ with respect to whether this effect is intentional. For both apps contradictions in the activity system can be identified, which may give rise to further development of the activity system. These seem, however, to be largest for travel feedback apps. Based on our exploration, we argue that quantitative research on the impact of apps should be complemented by qualitative research based on activity theory. In particular, activity theory may help to gain a better understanding of underlying mechanism by which apps influence travel, to strengthen the theoretical underpinning and interpretation of the results of quantitative research and to explore changes in the development and use of apps and their impact on travel behaviour. 相似文献

The analysis of complex networks has been carried out in different fields using an ample variety of method and concepts. Recently, in the general literature of regional economics, the concepts of resilience, connectivity, vulnerability and criticality have been gaining their momentum. The aim of this paper is to provide an analytical framework, using well-known accessibility indicators, in order to calculate the critical links or road sections of the Spanish high-capacity road network. Our analysis will be based on approximately four hundred sections that will be classified in five different groups according to their criticality degree in the whole network. Our analysis will be complemented with the comparison of the results obtained in five different scenarios, namely the average criticality using the effects on the whole country, Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Pontevedra. Furthermore, the paper will also analyze what kind of intrinsic characteristics of the sections favor or not the links’ criticality using a method based on a classification and regression tree. This analysis is crucial to understand other important concepts that are recently being studied in network and spatial economics, like, for example, resilience and vulnerability. It is concluded that the number of relations or routes, being a trunk or not, the road density and the time to Madrid capital play an important role in the criticality of the roads section in the high capacity road network. 相似文献

Automated driving technologies are currently penetrating the market, and the coming fully autonomous cars will have far-reaching, yet largely unknown, implications. A critical unknown is the impact on traveler behavior, which in turn impacts sustainability, the economy, and wellbeing. Most behavioral studies, to date, either focus on safety and human factors (driving simulators; test beds), assume travel behavior implications (microsimulators; network analysis), or ask about hypothetical scenarios that are unfamiliar to the subjects (stated preference studies). Here we present a different approach, which is to use a naturalistic experiment to project people into a world of self-driving cars. We mimic potential life with a privately-owned self-driving vehicle by providing 60 h of free chauffeur service for each participating household for use within a 7-day period. We seek to understand the changes in travel behavior as the subjects adjust their travel and activities during the chauffeur week when, as in a self-driving vehicle, they are explicitly relieved of the driving task. In this first pilot application, our sample consisted of 13 subjects from the San Francisco Bay area, drawn from three cohorts: millennials, families, and retirees. We tracked each subject’s travel for 3 weeks (the chauffeur week, 1 week before and 1 week after) and conducted surveys and interviews. During the chauffeur week, we observed sizable increases in vehicle-miles traveled and number of trips, with a more pronounced increase in trips made in the evening and for longer distances and a substantial proportion of “zero-occupancy” vehicle-miles traveled. 相似文献

A controller which is locally optimal near the origin and globally inverse optimal for the nonlinear system is proposed for path following of over actuated marine crafts with actuator dynamics. The motivation is the existence of undesired signals sent to the actuators, which can result in bad behavior in path following. To attenuate the oscillation of the control signal and obtain smooth thrust outputs, the actuator dynamics are added into the ship maneuvering model. Instead of modifying the Line-of-Sight (LOS) guidance law, this proposed controller can easily adjust the vessel speed to minimize the large cross-track error caused by the high vessel speed when it is turning. Understanding travellers’ response is essential to address policy questions arising from spatial and transport planning sectors. This paper demonstrates the usefulness of the multi-state supernetwork approach to investigate the effects of land-use transport scenarios on individuals’ travel patterns. In particular, it illustrates that multi-state supernetworks are capable of representing activity-travel patterns at a high level of detail, including the choice of mode, route, parking and activity location. Multi-faceted activity-travel preferences can be accommodated in supernetworks. Using a micro-simulation approach, the adaptation of individuals’ travel patterns to policies can be readily captured. The illustration concerns hypothetical land-use and transport scenarios for the city of Rotterdam (The Netherlands), focusing on accessibility changes, modal substitution and shift in the use of transport and location facilities. 相似文献
