The critical or hunting speed of solid axle rail vehicles is known to be a strong function of primary suspension stiffness, wheel/rail profile geometry (conicity and gravitational stiffness), wheel/rail friction forces (creep coefficients), bogie/carbody inertia properties, and secondary suspension design. This paper deals with the problem of maximizing the critical speed through design of the primary and secondary suspension but with control only over the range of wheel/rail geometry and friction characteristics. For example, the conicity may varie from .05 to .3 and the linear creep coefficients from 25% to 100% of the predicted Kalker values.
It is shown that the maximum critical speed is greatly limited by the wheel/rail geometry and friction variations. It is also shown that, when lateral curving and ride quality are considered, the best design approach is to select an intermediate primary longitudinal stiffness, to limit the lowest value of conicity (e.g. to .1 or .2) by wheel profile redesign, increasing the secondary yaw damping value (yaw relaxation) and optimizing the primary and secondary lateral stiffness. 相似文献

This paper considers the question whether the present recovery of shipping means a return to pre-crisis conditions with hegemony of OECD shipping or whether shipping has irrevocably changed. Shipping is losing its national character as ship management firms contribute towards the fragmenting of traditional ship-owning firms into separately managed activities, making shipping more footloose as an industry and facilitating relocation in least cost factor markets. Trade cycles may be at work in shipping like those observed in many industrial markets, beyond the scope of any single government's ability to control. The dispersion of shipping and shipping firms away from the historical concentration in a few traditional maritime powers towards low-cost countries must be seen as a manifestation of a secular trend, giving rise to a profound reorganization not only of shipping markets but of shipping itself. 相似文献

This paper discusses structural response to blast loading and temperature changes in fires. Both extreme events can be modelled using a range of analytical techniques from simple methodologies to the very complicated finite element analysis. The relatively simple techniques are appropriate for this type of problem and degree of accuracy required given the level of uncertainty in the loading. Given specific boundary conditions and physical properties, the methodologies proposed in the paper provide as good estimates of the dynamic response to blast loading and temperature increases in fires as the more sophisticated finite element method. The driver of a vehicle has a significant influence on handling and stability of the vehicle. Due to the complex behavior of a human pilot, a driver model is usually neglected when dealing with the problem of vehicle stability. This work focuses on the interaction between the vehicle and the human pilot. A model characterizing human operator behavior in a regulation task is employed to study directional stability. Linear stability is analyzed by the application of the Routh-Hurwitz criterion and stability boundaries separating the stable domain of operation of the driver from the unstable one are constructed.
The linear analysis predicts that the only possible instability in a driver/vehicle system is an oscillatory instability with increasing amplitude. It is shown that the addition of kinematic as well as slip angle nonlinearities in the vehicle model can have a stabilizing effect on these oscillations of the combined driver/vehicle system. They may also be responsible for the opposite, namely a linearly stable motion may become unstable to finite size disturbances. These nonlinear motions are predicted by a bifurcation analysis and are verified by direct numerical simulation. 相似文献

Recently, management of parking rates has been proposed as an effective policy option to ameliorate the adverse impacts of excessive commuter automobile use in urban areas. Parking price strategies have the potential for significantly altering travel behavior in favor of high occupancy vehicles, as well as reducing congestion, energy consumption and pollution. Unfortunately, however, a paucity of empirical evidence exists regarding the impacts of parking pricing policies on travel patterns. The recent attempt aimed at eliminating federal employee parking subsidies provided a unique opportunity to take a careful look at the impacts of commuter parking price increases.In November 1979, federal employees at many government facilities in Washington, DC, and other major cities began to pay one-half of nearby commercial parking rates for government-controlled parking spaces. This paper presents the impacts of the parking price increases on commuting behavior at a sample of 15 worksites in metropolitan Washington, DC, and discusses their short term planning and policy implications. A before and after with control group survey design monitored the effects on modal shifts, automobile occupancy, and parking behavior. The results showed that removing free parking and raising parking rates (from $10 to $32 per month) influenced some significant shifts to higher-occupancy modes, but that the shifts were not uniform in direction or magnitude across the sites. This paper reviews the effect of express coach deregulation in Britain following the Transport Act 1980. The authors have monitored the range of services offered before and after the Act, using operators' literature, roadside surveys, on-vehicle passenger interviews and interviews with operators as sources of information. These are used to present an overall picture of express deregulation, with particular reference to changes in real fare levels, and also the relative importance of competition within the coach industry compared with that of inter-modal competition (that between coach and rail). The latter has emerged as more significant.The greater part of the paper is devoted to analysis of the long-distance market but the development of commuter coach services into central London is also examined, together with the reasons why independent operators have secured a larger share of this market. 相似文献
