This paper uses a Stated Preference approach to undertake a detailed assessment of the effect on drivers’ route choice of information provided by variable message signs (VMS). Although drivers’ response to VMS information will vary according to the availability of alternative routes and the extent to which they are close substitutes, our findings show that route choice can be strongly influenced by the provision of information about traffic conditions ahead. This has important implications for the use of VMS systems as part of comprehensive traffic management and control systems. The principal findings are that the impact of VMS information depends on: the content of the message, such as the cause of delay and its extent; local circumstances, such as relative journey times in normal conditions; and drivers’ characteristics, such as their age, sex and previous network knowledge. The impact of qualitative indicators, visible queues and delays were examined. It was found that not only is delay time more highly valued than normal travel time, which is to be expected, but that drivers become more sensitive to delay time as delay times increased across the range presented. 相似文献

While the study of choices focuses primarily on the individual decision maker, there is growing interest in the examination of the choices made by groups. Much of the research into the choices of multiple decision makers has revealed that they differ significantly to those of individuals. In this study of household vehicle choice we similarly compare individual choices to group choices and support this finding. Consequently any research into choices that involve groups should acquire data from those groups. In this paper we show how this may be done via an interactive agency choice experiment which makes the individual preferences endogenous to the choice of the group. This method and many like it, however, involve significant time, incentive and administrative costs that often make such studies prohibitive. In this paper we also compare another class of model, minimum information group inference, which is designed to provide an overview of the likely group choice and while not having the specificity of detail as other methods, has the advantage of being much easier and cheaper to implement and is perhaps the only methodology that can be employed when it is not feasible for respondents to interact. We find that this method is a good approximation of group choice, mapping the preference space over which group choice is likely to be located.

Smart card fare collection systems are widely used nowadays in urban public transport networks. These systems are bound to facilitate the collection and management of revenues in transit authorities. However, since smart card systems collect a large amount of data on a daily basis, they can be exploited to better characterize the demand and supply of public transport in subways, tramways and bus networks, while data at an individual level should remain strictly confidential. The spatial and temporal dimensions of the data make it very interesting for planning purposes, but the data must first be validated and completed before further analysis. This article presents the results of five years of research conducted in collaboration with theSociété de transport de l??Outaouais, in Quebec. The following analyses are presented: error processing, estimation of alighting points, diffusion of operational statistics, analysis of user behaviour, analysis of network performance, comparison with household survey data and user loyalty modelling. 相似文献
