Ecological impacts of urban sprawl on the land, as well as forces that engender sprawl are outlined. Long-range land use priorities for more compact, transit-oriented development (TOD) are seen as ecological imperatives. While Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) could solve some congestion, it does not address these priorities. Several assumptions that underlie the PRT concept, particularly the premise that denser land use is per se socially undesirable, are challenged in terms of historical precedent. Rather, the explosive scale of ubiquitous motoring is seen as the key component of today's resistance to dense development. With peripheral parking and medium-capacity AGT links to regional transportation networks, new TOD could be redefined as pedestrian-zoned and richly landscaped urban neighborhoods; this would help resolve essential traffic and environmental barriers to its realization. The simpler automated shuttle and loop technologies are seen as more compact and potentially affordable for this purpose. Steps that could help open the way toward realization of such development are discussed. 相似文献

Headway control strategies have been proposed as methods for correcting transit service irregularities and thereby reducing passenger wait times at stops. This paper addresses a particular strategy which can be implemented on high frequency routes (headways under 10–12 minutes), in which buses are held at a control stop to a threshold headway. An algorithm is developed which yields the optimal control stop location and optimal threshold headway with respect to a system wait function. The specification of the wait function is based on the development of several empirical models, including a headway variation model and an average delay time model at control stops. A conclusion is reached that the headway variation does not increase linearly along a route, a common assumption made in many previous studies. Furthermore, the location of the optimal control stop and threshold value are sensitive to the passenger boarding profile, as expected. This paper presents a model for planning an air charter service for pre-scheduled group travel. This model is used to investigate the competitiveness of such an enterprise for student athlete travel in conference sports. The relevant demand subset to be served by a limited charter fleet is identified through a comparison with existing scheduled travel options. Further, the routing and scheduling of the charter aircraft is performed within the same framework. Through this modeling a method for formulating and accommodating continuous time windows and competitive market dynamics in strategic planning for a charter service is developed. Computational improvements to the basic model are also presented and tested. The model is applied to the Big Sky Conference for the 2006-2007 season, quantifying the benefits to the students from such a service and the change in expenditure associated with such a benefit for various assumptions about operations and value of time. The findings indicate the lack of spatial or sport based patterns for maximizing benefit, indicating the absence of simplistic “rules of thumb” for operating such a service, and validating the need for the model. 相似文献

In the face of growing concerns about greenhouse gas emissions, there is increasing interest in forecasting the likely demand
for alternative fuel vehicles. This paper presents an analysis carried out on stated preference survey data on California
consumer responses to a joint vehicle type choice and fuel type choice experiment. Our study recognises the fact that this
choice process potentially involves high correlations that an analyst may not be able to adequately represent in the modelled
utility components. We further hypothesise that a cross-nested logit structure can capture more of the correlation patterns
than the standard nested logit model structure in such a multi-dimensional choice process. Our empirical analysis and a brief
forecasting exercise produce evidence to support these assertions. The implications of these findings extend beyond the context
of the demand for alternative fuel vehicles to the analysis of multi-dimensional choice processes in general. Finally, an
extension verifies that further gains can be made by using mixed GEV structures, allowing for random heterogeneity in addition

The value of travel time savings in part depends upon the disutility of the travel time that is saved and partly on the use to which the time saved is put. It has long been recognised that the disutility of the time spent travelling also depends upon a wide range of factors such as the journey length or the effort, comfort and safety associated with travelling.Hence we might expect the value of motorists’ travel time to vary with the traffic conditions as represented by the degree of congestion, in part to reflect the more difficult driving environment when there are more vehicles, but also a higher sense of frustration, similar to that associated with waiting time and contributing to its premium valuation.In this context, and despite the predominance of car travel in developed countries, the empirical evidence specifically relating to car values of travel time tends to fail to distinguish between different types of time according to the degree of congestion. Thus we are often left unclear as to precisely what type of time has been valued. Moreover, when a distinction is made, it tends to be into a simple dichotomy of congested and uncongested traffic.This paper provides new evidence on the variation in the valuation of motorists’ travel time savings across a finer gradation of types of time than has been hitherto attempted. This is obtained from the same Stated Choice exercise conducted in the United Kingdom and the United States. Operating and capital costs for a high speed conveyor are estimated from cost data for low speed conveyors and from estimates for high speed designs. Unit costs are developed with reference to theoretical and practical conveyor capacities, and to the effect of traffic peaking on average utilization. User benefits are modelled as the change in consumers surplus arising from the introduction of a conveyor on a linear street as an alternative to walking. Cost and benefits vary widely depending on system design and location and on characteristics of travellers. Benefit measurements should reflect the effects on travel demand of a proposed installation, changes in value of time with changes in mode, and the effects of benefit “dilution” associated with limitations on access to the conveyor. 相似文献

This paper addresses the impacts of different scheduling alternatives for a branching transit route. It examines different schedule alternatives that might be used to optimize the route performance in terms of the passenger traveling time distributed among branch passengers and trunk‐line passengers. The schedule alternatives considered include transit vehicle allocation to different branches, offset shifting across vehicles on different branches, and vehicle holding (slack time) in the transit vehicle schedule. With these variables, several vehicle schedules are devised and examined based on a wide variety of possible passenger boarding scenarios using deterministic service models. Test outcomes provide general conclusions about the performance of the strategies. Vehicle assignment leading to even headways among branches is generally preferred for the case of low passenger demand. However, when passenger demand is high, or the differences between the passenger demands on branches are significant, unequal vehicle assignment will be helpful to improve the overall route performance. Holding, as a proactive strategy in scheduling, has the potential to be embedded into the schedule as a type of slack time, but needs further evidence and study to determine the full set of conditions where it may be beneficial. Offset shifting does not show sufficient evidence to be an efficient strategy to improve route performance in the case of low or high passenger demand. 相似文献
