In this paper we describe the shift in membership of the Marine Engineers' Beneficial Association (MEBA), the major us marine engneer labour union, and the problems asssociated with this change. The problematic nature of this change is examined by describing the changing membership of MEBA: demonstrating a relationship between the occupational socialzation of members prior to entering the union and their behaviour as members; and by explaining how the actions of MEBA led to the creation of the problem and the policy it implemented to alleviate the sitution. Data are gathared from participant observation, interviews with union officials and marine engineers. Implications for the formation of sentient groups are discussed. 相似文献

A comparative study of the performance of three rheological automotive shock absorber models as well as of an extended force-velocity relation in full vehicle simulation is performed. Simulation results for both the shock absorber test rig and a full vehicle crossing a single obstacle are compared with measured data. While the gain of accuracy by the extended force-velocity relation is marginal, the rheological models in general yield a noticeable improvement, which, however, in full vehicle simulation is less significant than in test rig simulation. Among the rheological models studied here, the one consisting of a nonlinear spring-dashpot element with an element modelling friction by a continuous transition from the compression to the extension range in parallel and a quadratic approximation of the static gas force exhibits the best global performance. 相似文献

The capabilities of ultra-wide-band (UWB) technology make it a viable candidate for fourth generation wireless communication. This paper proposes the use of UWB radio technology and time-reversal (TR) technique for underground train-to-wayside communication systems. UWB technology has the potential to offer simultaneous ground-to-train communication, train location and obstacle detection in front of the trains. Time-reversal channel prefiltering facilitates signal detection and helps reducing interference. Thus, UWB–TR combination provides a challenging, economically sensible, as well as technically effective alternative solution to existing signaling technologies used in urban transport systems. This paper concentrates on the communication function and reports simulation and measurement performance evaluation of such combinations, respectively in a deterministic tunnel channel model and in real tunnel environments. The third part of the state-of-the-art focuses on the future of road safety modeling and on conjectures concerning the evolution of national safety indicators. In the absence of econometric developments specific to road safety modeling, the research future must rely on pre-existing statistical procedures of econometrics applied to discrete/count and to aggregate data. In terms of contents, growing interest in the heterogeneity of road accident outcomes by category of victims could lead to treatments of this issue across research streams, say by top-down and bottom-up developments, but this speculation does not rest on extant adequate formulations of the issue of road user class and victim analysis. There are a growing number of people with mobility impairments who use wheelchairs to get around the built environment. This number is likely to increase in the future due to an increasingly ageing population combined with advances in medical technology which help to overcome some of the barriers to access that have hitherto prevented people from leading as full a life as they would have liked. Footways form an integral part of the transport network and therefore it is essential they can be accessed by all people. Currently, however, there is no well-defined method to measure the accessibility of footways for wheelchair users. One aspect of a footway is the crossfall – the transverse gradient designed to facilitate surface water drainage – which adds to a wheelchair user's difficulty when progressing along the footway. This paper first reviews previous research on measuring the effect of crossfalls on wheelchair accessibility, highlighting the need for a new approach. It then proposes the Capability Model as a starting point for this new approach. The model is updated and populated with an initial capability set chosen to measure footway accessibility across footways with three different crossfall gradients (0%, 2.5% and 4%). The focus is on the physical work provided by the user to the wheelchair in order to keep it travelling in a straight line. It is shown that in order to travel in a straight line when a footway is flat only a single principal capability is required: the ability to produce sufficient force over the required distance to overcome the inertia and rolling resistance and keep the wheelchair moving at the chosen velocity. When a positive crossfall gradient is introduced a second capability is required: the ability to apply different levels of force to the left and right sides of the wheelchair. It is concluded that it is possible to measure these two capabilities and these provide a good insight into the effect of crossfalls on footway accessibility for wheelchair users. 相似文献

One of the most important parts of the simulator exercise is the evaluation of the students’ results by the instructor both
during and after the training session. This should be performed in two ways: first, during the exercise run to ensure that
the training objective can be achieved and second after exercise completion in order to give the students an indication of
their performance during the simulation run. For these purposes software tools have been created and implemented at the Maritime
Simulation Centre in Warnemünde: the “Surveillance Tool”, allows for a monitoring during the run and the “Evaluation Tool”
will enable a detailed evaluation by the instructor after the run. It allows for in-depth search within the replay data and
at the same time facilitates the calculation of the final score for the student’s performance based on measurement factors
as penalties for exceeding quality limits. Within this paper a brief overview of the principles of these methods is high-lighted

This paper outlines an approach to couple a structured zooplankton population model with state variables for eggs, nauplii, two copepodites stages and adults adapted to Pseudocalanus elongatus into the complex marine ecosystem model ECOHAM2 with 13 state variables resolving the carbon and nitrogen cycle. Different temperature and food scenarios derived from laboratory culture studies were examined to improve the process parameterisation for copepod stage dependent development processes. To study annual cycles under realistic weather and hydrographic conditions, the coupled ecosystem–zooplankton model is applied to a water column in the northern North Sea. The main ecosystem state variables were validated against observed monthly mean values. Then vertical profiles of selected state variables were compared to the physical forcing to study differences between zooplankton as one biomass state variable or partitioned into five population state variables. Simulated generation times are more affected by temperature than food conditions except during the spring phytoplankton bloom. Up to six generations within the annual cycle can be discerned in the simulation. 相似文献
