This paper investigates the effects of the provision of traffic information on toll road usage based on a stated preference survey conducted in central Texas. Although many researchers have studied congestion pricing and traffic information dissemination extensively, most of them focused on the effects that these instruments individually produce on transportation system performance. Few studies have been conducted to elaborate on the impacts of traffic information dissemination on toll road utilization. In this study, 716 individuals completed a survey to measure representative public opinions and preferences for toll road usage in support of various traffic information dissemination classified by different modes, contents, and timeliness categories. A nested logit model was developed and estimated to identify the significant attributes of traffic information dissemination, traveler commuting patterns, routing behavior, and demographic characteristics, and analyze their impacts on toll road utilization. The results revealed that the travelers using dynamic message sign systems as their primary mode of receiving traffic information are more likely to choose toll roads. The potential toll road users also indicated their desire to obtain traffic information via internet. Information regarding accident locations, road hazard warnings, and congested roads is frequently sought by travelers. Furthermore, high-quality congested road information dissemination can significantly enhance travelers’ preferences of toll road usage. Specifically the study found that travelers anticipated an average travel time saving of about 11.3 min from better information; this is about 30 % of travelers’ average one-way commuting time. The mean value of the time savings was found to be about $11.82 per hour, close to ½ of the average Austin wage rate. The model specifications and result analyses provide in-depth insights in interpreting travelers’ behavioral tendencies of toll road utilization in support of traffic information. Mathematical model for optimising the sequence for clearing snow from the manoeuvring area during winter operations 下载免费PDF全文
This article considers the optimisation of the sequence for clearing snow from stretches of the manoeuvring area of an airport. This issue involves the optimisation of limited resources to remove snow from taxiways and runways thereby leaving them in an acceptable condition for operating aircraft. The airfield is divided into subsets of significant stretches for the purpose of operations and target times are established during which these are open to aircraft traffic. The document contains several mathematical models each with different functions, such as the end time of the process, the sum of the end times of each stretch and gap between the estimated and the real end times. During this process, we introduce different operating restrictions on partial fulfilment of the operational targets as applied to zones of special interest, or relating to the operation of the snow‐clearing machines. The problem is solved by optimisation based on linear programming. The article gives the results of the computational tests carried out on five distinct models of the manoeuvring area, which cover increasingly complex situations and larger areas. This paper presents a detailed exploratory analysis of joint activity participation characteristics using the American Time
Use Survey (ATUS). As a very large nationwide survey that explicitly elicited information on both household and non-household
companions for each activity episode, the ATUS is ideally suited for this analysis. Several intuitive and interesting results
are obtained. Joint episodes are found to be of longer durations, significantly likely to take place at the residence of other
people, and often confined to certain time periods of the weekday. In addition, important differences in these characteristics
are also observed based on activity purpose, companion type, and the day of the week. These findings are intended to provide
the basis for the justification of detailed collection of joint activity–travel participation information in household activity–travel
surveys, and also as a stimulant for further empirical analysis and modeling of joint activity participation behavior.

Between 1990 and 2000, U.S. transit agencies added service and increased ridership, but the ridership increase failed to keep
pace with the service increase. The result was a decline in service effectiveness (or productivity). This marks the continuation
of a long-running and often-studied trend. The scholarly literature attributes this phenomenon, at least in part, to transit
agency decisions to decentralize their service rather than focus on serving the traditional CBD market. Many scholars argue
that a decentralized service orientation is both ineffective and inefficient because it attracts few riders and requires large
per-rider subsidies. This research tests whether a non-traditional, decentralized service orientation, called multidestination
service, results in reduced service productivity. Contrary to what the literature suggests, we find that MSAs whose transit
agencies pursued a multidestination service orientation did not experience lower productivity. These results indicate that
policies that have encouraged the growth of decentralized transit services have not necessarily been detrimental to the industry.

This paper presents a multiple discrete-continuous econometric structure to model the daily time-investment decisions of couples
in solo- and joint-discretionary activities incorporating intra-personal and inter-personal inter-dependencies. The empirical
model was estimated using data from the 2000 Bay Area Travel Survey. The results indicate evidence of the positive impact
of vehicle availability on independent activity participation and the negative impacts of the presence of children and mandatory
time investments on the joint discretionary-activity engagement of the spouses. In addition, we also find the mandatory- and
maintenance-activity-participation characteristics of the spouse to influence the discretionary activity choices of individuals.
Finally, the analysis also indicates a strong impact of common unobserved factors on the decisions of couples. From a policy
analysis perspective, these results imply that demand-management actions directly impacting one adult could also result in
changes to the activity patterns of his/her spouse and to changes in joint activity participation characteristics.

Abstract This paper surveys the technologies available for constructing a pervasive, national‐scale road pricing system. It defines the different types of road pricing, the methods by which a vehicle’s position can be determined, and then examines possible pricing regimes in the context of their technological requirements and implications. The issue of enforcement and the distribution of pricing policies are considered, and further complexities are outlined. An examination of the security aspects of such systems is made, focusing particularly on the need to ensure privacy using technological, rather than solely procedural, methods. The survey concludes that a pervasive, national‐scale deployment is unlikely to be technically achievable in the short‐term. 相似文献

The paper reports on simulation experiments conducted by the International Study Group on Land‐Use/Transport Interaction (ISGLUTI) for the metropolitan region of Dortmund in the Federal Republic of Germany. Three land‐use/transport simulation models were applied to the Dortmund region: the DORTMUND model developed at the University of Dortmund, the LILT model being used at University College London and the MEPLAN package developed by Marcial Echenique & Partners in Cambridge. The three models are briefly characterized and their ex‐post forecasts are compared with the actual development of the region. The final section of the paper compares how the three models respond to a common set of assumptions and policies from the fields of land‐use control, traffic management and transport investment.
