Laguna Cuyutlán (Colima, Mexico), an Important Bird Area, used to provide breeding habitat for ground-nesting waterbirds. During 2014 and 2015, nesting efforts of laughing gull, black skimmer, and royal, gull-billed and Forster's terns failed almost completely due to inundation, while least terns and snowy plovers fared the same during 2014. No anomalies in rainfall, tidal level, or coseismic subsidence explained such failure. Rather, the inundations were due to the enlarging of Canal Tepalcates that connects the lagoon with the sea, which was widened from 100 to 300 m and dredged to 17-m deep. Before this, the hydrodynamics were regulated by evaporation and runoff. Now, increased seawater volumes dominate the basin's hydrodynamics. The failure of Laguna Cuyutlán as a breeding habitat for these birds is an important threat for these species, as this lagoon held one of the < 20 colonies known for several of these species along the western coast of North and Central America. Documenting this demise of Laguna Cuyutlán for ground-nesting waterbirds transcends the regional scale as it emphasizes the little consideration still given to biodiversity vs. economic development, and is a warning for coastal projects in other developing areas of the world. 相似文献

Research purposes: The existing researches about excavating procedures of deep foundation pit on nearby metro tunnel in soft formation are lack of systematicness, and creep characteristics of soft clay are not usually taken into consideration. This paper takes Qianhaiwan station of Metro Line 11 in Shengzhen as engineering background and considers creep characteristics in sludge formation. The influence of step excavation in the transversal, longitudinal and vertical directions on the deformation of foundation pit and nearby subway tunnel are simulated, which may be expected to provide theoretical basis for choosing foundation pit excavation procedure of Qianhaiwan station. Research conclusions: (1) The segment far away from tunnel should be excavated firstly when only transversal step excavation was undertaken along the horizontal direction of foundation pit. (2) The maximum horizontal displacement of the piles show exponential relations with the number of segments when step excavation of foundation pit was undertaken in vertical and transversal or longitudinal. If thickness of every step excavation was limited in 1.5~2 m, the horizontal displacement of the pile near tunnel can be reduced about 9 percent when there is no horizontal step excavation. (3) Transversal step excavation with segments far from tunnel excavated firstly was found to be the best step excavation method under the same condition of step number and support, and longitudinal and transversal step excavation followed while longitudinal step excavation was the last. Protection against on-ship infectious disease—whether due to mishap or to harmful purpose—faces special situational problems. Sometimes, when infection levels on board have reached threshold levels, emergency actions are required. Often, the most thorough strategies for responding to threat are not feasible. A rapid first-stage test (RFT) is a fast, minimally invasive procedure used to rule out from possible infection a large percentage of an infection-threatened group. Prevention and control of on-ship infection need to combine various interconnected tactics. When timely criterion tests are not possible, the medical team must adopt fast alternative measures. The methods used to summarize protection against on-ship infectious agents included a scientific literature review and a web search. The fields of the review were maritime, health, and technology sources. Special attention was paid to material dealing with risks and threats of on-ship penetration by infectious agents, on-ship infection prevalence thresholds, and rapid diagnostic screens. The Bayes rule and the law of large numbers were applied to the analysis, for large on-ship populations, of RFT indications of crossing of an infection prevalence threshold. The increasing risk of serious on-ship infection—either accidental or purposeful—calls for a multi-layered protection approach. RFTs are a key part of the outer layer of such a defense. Well-designed and well-administered RFTs provide several advantages for defense against on-ship infection: low-cost, non-invasive, fast, and focuses on a drastically smaller number of infection possibilities. 相似文献
