Sri Lanka has an extensive Three-Wheeler Taxi service comprised of around 300,000 vehicles. These vehicles, which first made an entry to Sri Lanka’s roads in the early 1980s, account for around 15% of the active motor vehicle fleet at present. Three-Wheelers Taxis also account for around 6% of the passenger kilometres. These vehicles are mostly individually operated with some owned by the operator and others hired on a monthly or daily basis. The industry is unregulated with vehicle registration and driving licenses being the only instruments of regulation. Fares are unregulated. However, most operators belong to associations which are loose collections of operators found in a given locality. These associations impose a degree of self regulation with respect to fares. They also tend to demonstrate oligapolistic behaviour.The paper is based on a survey of 200 operators and 100 passengers from a Divisional Secretariat area in Colombo District. The survey covered a number of details pertaining to ownership, management and fare structures, as well as opinions on the service attributes by users. The survey also covered perceptions of operators to determine the social, economic and transport implications of the services provided. Details were also obtained on the profiles of the operators and their expectations.The paper provides the results of the analysis of this data and draws a number of conclusions on the economics of the industry as well as the social aspects associated with it. It also discusses the characteristics of the users of these three wheelers as well as their typical use. The analysis also investigates complementarily of service provision between three wheelers as an access mode to buses and railways. This analysis has been used to develop an understanding of the manner in which the industry has grown over the last two decades and how it is being operated today. It also identifies areas wherein the industry has become inefficient and assesses the degree of over pricing that exists due to this. The data also helps to determine the relationship between unemployment and provision of self-employed transport services.The paper concludes with a synopsis of the profile of the industry and its role within the wider transport sector and with respect to ownership. This paper attempts to model vehicular time gap, which is defined as the time interval between any two successive arrivals of vehicles at a reference point of measurement on a road segment. Such an approach is justified under the non-lane-based heterogeneous traffic conditions prevailing in developing countries such as India, characterized by many “zero” time gaps due to simultaneous arrivals within a given road width. In addition, time gap data are characterized by a significant amount of data in the tail region due to long headways. Nevertheless, many researchers of time gap modeling have used light-tailed distributions that modeled time gaps satisfactorily due to two reasons: (a) The tail data was merged into a single bin; and (b) goodness-of-fit tests such as the Chi-square test, which has many limitations, were used. Further, some researchers have suggested different distributions for the same range of traffic flows, leading to ambiguity in distribution selection. In addition, bin size, which dictates the degree of fit of any distribution, has been ascribed very less importance in time gap modeling. Hence, this paper tries to consolidate and standardize the existing research in time gap modeling research by addressing all these issues. Two new distributions, namely Generalized Pareto (GP) and Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) with better tail modeling properties, have been proposed along with other conventional distribution to model vehicular time gaps over a wide range of flow from 550 vph to 4,100 vph. Two types of goodness-of-fit tests, namely Area-based and Distance-based tests, have been used. It has been found from the study that GP distribution fits the time gap data well (overall and tails) up to a flow range of 1,500 vph based on both kinds of tests, and GEV fits the data well for the flow levels above 1,500 vph based on the area test only. 相似文献

This study proposes an aerodynamically optimized outer shape of a sedan by using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN), which focused on modifying the rear body shapes of the sedan. To determine the optimization variables, the unsteady flow field around the sedan driving at very fast speeds was analyzed by CFD simulation, and fluctuations of the drag coefficient (C D ) and pressure around the car were calculated. After consideration of the baseline result of CFD, 6 local parts from the end of the sedan were chosen as the design variables for optimization. Moreover, an ANN approximation model was established with 64 experimental points generated by the D-optimal methodology. As a result, an aerodynamically optimized shape for the rear end of the sedan in which the aerodynamic performance is improved by about 5.64% when compared to the baseline vehicle is proposed. Finally, it is expected that within the accepted range of shape modifications for a rear body, the aerodynamic performance of a sedan can be enhanced so that the fuel efficiency of the sedan can be improved. The YF SONATA, a sedan manufactured by Hyundai Motors Corporate, played a major role in this research as the baseline vehicle. 相似文献

Compression ratio (CR) is a design parameter with highest influence on efficiency, emission and engine characteristics. In conventional internal combustion (IC) engines, the compression ratio is fixed and their performance is, therefore, a compromise between conflicting requirements. One fundamental problem is that drive units in the vehicles must successfully operate at variable speed and loads and in different ambient conditions. If a diesel engine has a fixed CR, a minimal value must be chosen that can achieve a reliable self-ignition when starting the engine in cold start conditions. In diesel engines, variable compression ratio (VCR) provides control of peak cylinder pressure, improves cold start ability and low load operation, enabling the multi-fuel capability, increase of fuel economy and reduction of emissions. By application of VCR and other mechanisms, the optimal regime fields are extended to the prime requirements: consumption, power, emission, noise, etc., and/or the possibility of the engine to operate with different fuels is extended. An experimental Diesel engine has been developed at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Kragujevac. The changes of CR are realized by changing the piston chamber diameter. Detailed engine tests were performed at the Laboratory for IC engines. Special attention has been given to decrease of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. An optimal field of CR variation has been determined depending on the given objectives: minimal fuel consumption, minimal nitric oxides, and particulate matter emissions, etc. 相似文献

The regenerative braking system of the Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is a key technology that can improve fuel efficiency
by 20∼50%, depending on motor size. In the regenerative braking system, the electronically controlled brake subsystem that
directs the braking forces into four wheels independently is indispensable. This technology is currently found in the Electronic
Stability Program (ESP) and in Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC). As braking technologies progress toward brake-by-wire systems,
the development of Electro-Mechanical Brake (EMB) systems will be very important in the improvement of both fuel consumption
and vehicle safety. This paper investigates the modeling and simulation of EMB systems for HEVs. The HEV powertrain was modeled
to include the internal combustion engine, electric motor, battery and transmission. The performance simulation for the regenerative

The objective of this paper is to improve the performance estimation model of the internal flow field of a torque converter.
Compared with performance experiment results, the converter based on the one-dimensional model does not satisfy the performance
requirements demanded in practice. Therefore, we need to develop more predictable and reliable performance estimation models.
In order to obtain shape information on three-dimensional blade geometry, a process of reverse engineering conducts a torque
converter assembly, impeller, turbine and stator. In addition, a CFD simulation including mesh generation and post-processing
was carried out to extract equivalent parameters from the internal flow field. The internal flow field can be explained by
analyze the correlation between a performance estimation model and CFD analysis. The equivalent performance model adopts the
variation of energy loss coefficients for a given operating condition according to the application of a changing energy loss
coefficient by the least mean squares method. The estimated equivalent model improves the agreement in performance between
experiments and the theoretical model. This model can reduce the error to within about 3 percent. Furthermore, this procedure
for predicted performance achieves eminence in the estimation of the capacity factor. 相似文献

Most hybrid vehicles employ the continuously variable transmission (CVT or eCVT) currently as their choice of the transmissions. Recently, an automated geared transmission (AGT) or dual clutch transmission (DCT) is being tried for some hybrid vehicles for the better fuel economy than the CVT hybrid. However, this AGT or DCT is using automated clutches which require the hydraulic power in addition to the slippage in the clutch plate invoking some energy loss as well as wear. Also, they require a motor with significant power to match to the engine power. The clutchless geared smart transmission (CGST) has no clutch and the clutch function is performed by a planetary gear system controlled by a motor-generator. The hybrid vehicles proposed here using CGST may have some merits in durability, fuel efficiency, and cost since they do not have clutches. The motor used for the clutch function can be also working for power merge with the engine in propelling the vehicle. The proposed hybrid system can be either mild hybrid or full hybrid by adopting a different capacity of battery with much smaller motor-generator due to the planetary gear system compared to the other type hybrid vehicles. In this study, the prospects of newly proposed CGST hybrid system are examined in practical aspects compared with AGT hybrid or DCT hybrid systems. 相似文献
