Diagnostic studies of ocean dynamics based on the analysis of oceanographic cruise data are usually quite sensitive to observation errors, to the station distribution and to the synopticity of the sampling. The first two sources have been evaluated in the Part I of this work. Here we evaluate synopticity errors for different sampling strategies applied to simulated unstable baroclinic waves. As suggested in previous studies, downstream and upstream cross-front samplings produce larger errors than along-front samplings. In our particular case study, the along-front sampling results in fractional errors (rms error divided by the standard deviation of the field) of about 15% for dynamic height and more than 50% for relative vorticity and vertical velocity. These values are significantly higher than those obtained in Part I for typical observation errors and sampling limitations (about 6% for dynamic height and between 15 and 30% for geostrophic vorticity and vertical velocity).We also propose and test two methods aimed at reducing the impact of the lack of synopticity. The first one corrects the observations using the quasi-geostrophic tendency equation. The second method combines the relocation of stations (based on a system velocity) and the correction of observations (through the estimation of a growth rate). For the fields simulated in this work, the second method gives better results than the first, being able to eliminate practically all synopticity errors in the case of the along-front sampling. In practice, the error reduction is likely to be less effective, since actual fields cannot be expected to have a system velocity as homogeneous as for the single-mode waves simulated in this work. 相似文献

For high speed rail traffic it is necessary to design overhead power systems which minimize the contact loss between pantograph head and contact wire. To predict how different design solutions will behave it is favourable to model and simulate the dynamic behaviour. In this paper a model of an overhead power system is specified and used in simulation. The model is suitable for simulation with contact loss since it includes specifications of impact conditions between pantograph head and contact wire. Two sets of equations of motion are specified, one for the contact case and one for the non-contact case. The model also includes lateral movement of the wire due to the zigzag span and friction between the pantograph head and the contact wire. It is shown how to make animations of the system behaviour using a MCAE-system. The animations are made using a geometrical model of the system together with results from numerical simulations.
Through the examples provided, use of the mathematical model and the geometrical model is presented. The response is visualised as time histories and phase plane diagrams of different coordinates and as animations of the total system response. The different types of visualisations make an excellent combination when studying the system behaviour of different design solutions.
In one example, simulation using the linearised set of equations gives the same results as simulation using the set of fully nonlinear equations, due to periodic response and the simple alternation of contact conditions. This work analyses whether port state control (PSC) has been effective in reducing environmental pollution in the region it covers. The analysis covers the technical and political aspects of PSC's effectiveness. To match the complexity of marine environmental pollution and safety issues, several indicators are developed to assess performance under both aspects. Previous studies on quantitative and qualitative material, as well as fresh evidence, are utilized to obtain quantitative or qualitative evaluations, as the case may be. The separate insights are then combined to reach an integrated conclusion. PSC is found to be effective in fighting marine environmental pollution, but with peripheral shortcomings of a mainly operational nature. In optimally controlled active suspensions with either full or incomplete state feedback there is tradeoff between system performance and overall stiffness. It is sought to remove this limitation by incorporating integral action which results in a system with infinite stiffness towards static loading, but which is soft with respect to road inputs. The system is also able to eliminate the steady state deflections due to step and (potentially) ramp type inputs at the wheel.
