A transport system has been proposed using buses operating over ordinary roads and over special reserved tracks (busways) on which they might be automatically guided. Using cost and performance data resulting from an earlier technical study (not reported here), a hypothetical network of routes and services in the West Midlands conurbation is studied. Estimates of patronage diverted from public and private transport enable the profitability of the system and its costs and benefits to be assessed. It is concluded that the system could be attractive both in commercial and in cost/benefit terms, providing acceptable means could be found for handling the buses around and through the inner central areas of cities. The net environmental changes, which would result from additional fixed plant permitting more efficient use of mobile plant, have not been quantified. 相似文献

This paper describes tailpipe emission results generated by the Vehicle Performance and Emissions Monitoring system (VPEMS). VPEMS integrates on‐board emissions and vehicle/driver performance measurements with positioning and communications technologies, to transmit a coherent spatio‐temporally referenced dataset to a central base station in near real time. These results focus on relationships between tailpipe emissions of CO, CO2, NOx and speed and acceleration. Emissions produced by different driving modes are also presented. Results are generally as one would expect, showing variation between vehicle speed, vehicle acceleration and emissions. Data is based upon a test run in central London on urban streets with speeds not exceeding about 65 km/h. The results presented demonstrate the capabilities of the system. Various issues remain with regard to validation of the data and expansion of the system capability to obtain additional vehicle performance data. 相似文献

The concept of accessibility has been variously interpreted as being the “nearness to places,” the “nearness to activities” and more recently the “ease of participating in activities.” With each of these qualitative interpretations, there has also been a variety of quantitative definitions of accessibility. This paper shows that many of the proposed definitions of accessibility can in fact be gathered together to form a spectrum of accessibility measures. These measures differ with respect to the factors included in their formulation and their degree of behavioural interpretation. Existing measures of accessibility are shown to be deficient in one major aspect. That is, they assume that for any one measure of accessibility there is but one origin of trips. Thus, in estimating the accessibility of a point within a region it is assumed that all potential trips, which contribute to the accessibility of that point, start from that single point. In view of the considerable amount of evidence demonstrating the widespread, and increasing, occurrence of trip‐linking such a proposition must be viewed as being rather doubtful. In the light of this, the paper proceeds to develop a measure of accessibility which explicitly accounts for the linking of trips. The implications of this measure, compared to a conventional unlinked‐trip accessibility measure, are discussed as are some problems which are foreseen in the practical implementation of such a measure. 相似文献

The paper proposes a first-order macroscopic stochastic dynamic traffic model, namely the stochastic cell transmission model (SCTM), to model traffic flow density on freeway segments with stochastic demand and supply. The SCTM consists of five operational modes corresponding to different congestion levels of the freeway segment. Each mode is formulated as a discrete time bilinear stochastic system. A set of probabilistic conditions is proposed to characterize the probability of occurrence of each mode. The overall effect of the five modes is estimated by the joint traffic density which is derived from the theory of finite mixture distribution. The SCTM captures not only the mean and standard deviation (SD) of density of the traffic flow, but also the propagation of SD over time and space. The SCTM is tested with a hypothetical freeway corridor simulation and an empirical study. The simulation results are compared against the means and SDs of traffic densities obtained from the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) of the modified cell transmission model (MCTM). An approximately two-miles freeway segment of Interstate 210 West (I-210W) in Los Ageles, Southern California, is chosen for the empirical study. Traffic data is obtained from the Performance Measurement System (PeMS). The stochastic parameters of the SCTM are calibrated against the flow-density empirical data of I-210W. Both the SCTM and the MCS of the MCTM are tested. A discussion of the computational efficiency and the accuracy issues of the two methods is provided based on the empirical results. Both the numerical simulation results and the empirical results confirm that the SCTM is capable of accurately estimating the means and SDs of the freeway densities as compared to the MCS. 相似文献

This article presents the results of a study exploring travellers’ preferences for middle-distance travel using Q-methodology.
Respondents rank-ordered 42 opinion statements regarding travel choice and motivations for travel in general and for car and
public transport as alternative travel modes. By-person factor analysis revealed four distinct preference segments for middle-distance
travel: (1) choice travellers with a preference for public transport, (2) deliberate-choice travellers, (3) choice travellers
with car as dominant alternative, and (4) car-dependent travellers. These preference segments differ in terms of the levels
of involvement and cognitive effort in travel decision making, the travel consideration-set and underlying motivations. The
study showed that for most people there is more to travel than getting from point A to point B, and that there is considerable
heterogeneity in middle-distance travel preferences. Policy implications for reducing the need for travel and promoting a
modal shift from car to other travel modes are discussed. 相似文献

It is widely recognized that individual decision-making is subject to the evaluation of gains and losses around a reference
point. The estimation of discrete choice models increasingly use data from stated choice experiments which are pivoted around
a reference alternative. However, to date, the specification of a reference alternative in transport studies has been fixed,
whereas it is common to observe individuals adjusting their preferences according to a change in their reference point. This
paper focuses on individual reactions, in a freight choice context, to a negative change in the reference alternative values,
identifying the behavioural implications in terms of loss aversion and diminishing sensitivity. The results show a significant
adjustment in the valuation of gains and losses around a shifted reference alternative. In particular, we find an average
increase in loss aversion for cost and time attributes, and a substantial decrease for punctuality. These findings are translated
to significant differences in the willingness to pay and willingness to accept measures, providing supporting evidence of

This paper explores the relative influence of factors affecting light rail ridership on 57 light rail routes in Australia,
Europe and North America through an empirical examination of route level data. Previous research suggests a wide range of
possible ridership drivers but is mixed in clarifying major influences. A multiple-regression analysis of route level ridership
(boardings per route km) and catchment residential and employment density, car ownership, service level, speed, stop spacing,
share of accessible stops, share of segregated right of away and integrated fares was undertaken. This established a statistically
significant model (99% level, R2 = 0.76) with five significant variables including service level, routes being in Europe, speed, integrated ticketing and
employment density. In general these findings support selected results from previous research. A secondary analysis of service
effectiveness measures (boardings/vehicle km, i.e. the relative ridership performance for a given level of service), established
a statistically significant model (99% level, R2 = 0.67) with 6 significant explanatory variables including being in Europe, speed, employment density, integrated ticketing,
track segregation and service level. The latter implies that a higher frequency results in higher service effectiveness. Overall
the research findings stress the importance of providing a high level of service as a major driver of light rail ridership.
The ‘European Factor’ is also an important though intriguing influence but its cause remains unclear and requires further

This paper investigates the impact of a variety of travel information types on the quality of travel choices. Choice quality
is measured by comparing observed choices made under conditions of incomplete knowledge with predicted choice probabilities
under complete knowledge. Furthermore, the potential impact of travel information is considered along multiple attribute-dimensions
of alternatives, rather than in terms of travel time reductions only. Data is obtained from a choice experiment in a multimodal
travel simulator in combination with a web-based mode-choice experiment. A Structural Equation Model is estimated to test
a series of hypothesized direct and indirect relations between a traveler’s knowledge levels, information acquisition behavior
and the resulting travel-choice quality. The estimation results support the hypothesized relations, which provides evidence
of validity and applicability of the developed measure of travel-choice quality. Furthermore, found relations in general provide
some careful support for the often expected impact of information on the quality of travel choices. The effects are largest
for information services that generate previously unknown alternatives, and lowest for services that provide warnings in case
of high travel times only.

For railway vehicles having coned wheels mounted on solid axles there is, in general, a conflict between stability of lateral deviations from the motion along the track and ability to steer round curves. However, the three-axle vehicle with zero bending stiffness and with shear elasticity between all wheelsets can satisfy the requirement of perfect steering and for a range of values of equivalent conicity possesses both static and dynamic stability. The static and dynamic stability of the most general form of symmetric three-axle vehicle is investigated, and stability criteria derived. 相似文献
