This paper presents extensive non-linear finite element (FE) analysis and formulation development work carried out on the ultimate compressive strength of plates and stiffened panels of ship structures. A review of contemporary designs for large ships was carried out. The existing formulae for plate ultimate compressive strength were reviewed and compared with non-linear FE analysis results. A semi-analytical formula for ultimate compressive strength assessments of stiffened panels was proposed and is described. The developed formula was verified against results using ABAQUS non-linear FE software for a series of 61 stiffened panels and a good agreement between the proposed formula and FE results were achieved. The method was verified against a large number of published FE results and was also compared with 58 experimental results. The developed method was also applied to the deck and bottom structures for a range of various sizes oil tankers and bulk carriers.  相似文献

Queue management is a valuable but underutilized technique which could be used to minimize the negative impacts of queues during oversaturated traffic conditions. One of the main obstacles of applying queue management techniques along signalized arterials is the unavailability of a robust and sufficiently accurate method for measuring the number of vehicles approaching a signalized intersection. The method based on counting vehicles as they enter and exit a specific detection zone with check-in and check-out detectors is unreliable because of the likely systematic under or over counting and the resulting cumulative errors. This paper describes the application of the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) in the development of a new fuzzy logic-based approach for estimating the Number of Vehicles in a Detection Zone (NVDZ) by using detector time-occupancy data (instead of detector counts). Microscopic simulation results are used to evaluate the accuracy of the NVDZ estimates. Tests were carried out to determine the transferability of a tuned Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) and to check the sensitivity of the calibrated FIS to detection coverage, the location of the detection zone relative to the signalized (bottleneck) intersection, the length of the detection zone, and different signal timings at the bottleneck intersection. Results show that the NVDZ estimation based on fuzzy logic seems to be a feasible approach. Although the primary objective of developing the NVDZ estimation technique has been queue management, other applications such as ramp metering and incident detection could potentially use the same technique.  相似文献

Transportation planners and policy analysts require, for scenario testing, a detailed fuel consumption model of public transit operating in multimodal corridors. Although much effort has been devoted to the development of detailed methodology for estimating fuel consumption of automobile travel on freeways and arterials, the same is not the case for public transit. This paper presents methodology for the estimation of fuel consumption for bus operation on transitways/busways serving major travel corridors. Bus fuel consumption model is reported for standard and articulated buses. This model was adapted from an existing heavy vehicle fuel use model by incorporating the transitway design and bus operational characteristics.  相似文献

This paper present a new method based on Chaos Genetic Algorithm (CGA) to localize the human iris in a given image. First, the iris image is preprocessed to estimate the range of the iris localization, and then CGA is used to extract the boundary of the iris. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms is efficient and robust, and can achieve sub pixel precision. Because Genetic Algorithms (GAs) can search in a large space, the algorithm does not need accurate estimation of iris center for subsequent localization, and hence can lower the requirement for original iris image processing. On this point, the present localization algirithm is superior to Daugman‘s algorithm.  相似文献

Travellers can benefit from the availability of point‐to‐point driving time estimates on a real time basis for making travel decisions such as route choice at strategic locations (e.g. junctions of major routes). This paper reports a predictive travel time methodology that features a Bayesian approach to fusing and updating information for use in advanced traveller information system. The methodology addresses the issue that data captured in real time on travel conditions becomes obsolete and has archival value only unless it is used as an input to a predictive travel time method for updating the information. The need for fusing real time data with other factors that influence travel time is defined and the concept of predictive travel time is discussed. The methodological framework and its components are advanced and an example application is provided for illustrating the fusion of data captured by infrastructure‐based and mobile technology with model‐based predictions in order to produce expected travel times. This research investigates stochastic estimation of a look-ahead sensor scheme using the optimal preview control for an active suspension system of a full tracked vehicle (FTV). In this scheme, wheel disturbance input to the front wheels are estimated using the dynamic equations of the system. The estimated road disturbance input at the front wheels are utilized as preview information for the control of subsequently following wheels of FTV. The design of optimal preview control is used as a classical linear quadratic Gaussian problem by combining dynamics of the original system and estimation of previewed road inputs. The effectiveness of the preview controller is evaluated by comparing the estimated information with the measured information for different road profiles, where Kalman filter is used for the state-variables estimation of the FTV. This research also considers the reduced order estimation using commonly available sensors in order to decrease the number of sensors and measurements. The simulation results’ using an active suspension system with different preview information shows that the proposed system can be beneficial for the improvement of ride comfort of tracked vehicles without using any specialized sensors for preview information calculation.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to report energy consumption characteristics of Canadian intercity travel modes from a total energy viewpoint. For line haul as well as terminal access/egress operations, both the direct energy consumed for vehicle propulsion and the indirect energy required for the provision of intercity transportation services are investigated. In addition to a discussion of methods of estimating energy efficiency, factors affecting modal energy consumption are identified and the energy efficiency impact of technical developments are assessed. Energy efficiency information reported here is believed to be essential for planning, policy and conservation research at the disaggregated level.  相似文献

The major constraint on the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) based underwater acoustic(UWA) communication is to keep subcarriers orthogonal.In this paper,Doppler estimation and the respective compensation technique along with various diversity techniques were deliberated for OFDM-based systems best suited for underwater wireless information exchange.In practice,for mobile communication,adjustment and tuning of transducers in order to get spatial diversity is extremely difficult.Considering the relatively low coherence bandwidth in UWA,the frequency diversity design with the Doppler compensation function was elaborated here.The outfield experiments of mobile underwater acoustic communication(UWAC) based on OFDM were carried out with 0.17 bit/(sHz) spectral efficiency.The validity and the dependability of the scheme were also analyzed.  相似文献

Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transportation in the context of the climate change issue and the associated Kyoto Agreement of 1997 is a challenge. Since urban transportation is a major contributor to greenhouse gases, measures are required to reduce these emissions. Given that during peak periods, road vehicles propelled by petroleum fuel‐based internal combustion engines produce a high level of GHG emissions due to stop and go operations, measures to improve traffic flow can play an effective mitigation role. This paper describes a simulation‐based methodology and a case study for the quantification of GHG emission reduction owing to advanced traffic control systems.  相似文献
