The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the characteristics of the size distribution and the number concentration
of PM (particulate matters) emitted from the diffusion flame of a boiler burner, which has the same type of combustion as
a diesel engine. This study is performed to investigate the emission characteristics of nanoparticles generated from diffusion
combustion in diesel fuel, and it considered fuel factors and the reaction characteristics of the nanoparticles on the DOC
(Diesel oxidation catalyst). The factors examined in this experiment included the sulfur content in the fuel, the blend of
the diesel fuel containing biodiesel and bio-ethanol, and the concentration of engine oil (0.1% and 1.0%) blended with diesel
fuel. The particle size distribution of the nanoparticles exhausted from the boiler burner was measured by an SMPS (scanning
mobility particle sizer). The number concentration of PM that were smaller than 70 nm in diameter greatly increased in the
rear of the DOC when fuel containing 250 ppm of sulfur was used. The experiment also suggested that the particle number concentration
in both the front and rear of the DOC was lower when ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel) fuel blended with biodiesel and bio-ethanol,
which are oxygenated fuels, was used than when only ULSD fuel was used. The higher the content of engine oil in the fuel,
the higher the particle number concentration was in the front and rear of the catalyst. When the first dilution air temperature
is increased from 30°C to 180°C, the nanoparticle number concentration dramatically dropped in the rear of the catalyst when
fuel containing 250 ppm of sulfur was used, while the particle size distribution remained almost the same when the fuel with

The coordination between the powertrain and control strategy has significant impacts on the operating performance of hybrid
electric vehicles (HEVs). A comprehensive methodology based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is presented in this paper
to achieve parameter optimization for both the powertrain and the control strategy, with the aim of reducing fuel consumption,
exhaust emissions, and manufacturing costs of the HEV. The original multi-objective optimization problem is converted into
a single-objective problem with a goal-attainment method, and the principal parameters of powertrain and control strategy
are set as the optimized variables by PSO, with the dynamic performance index of HEVs being defined as the constraint condition.
Computer simulations were carried out, which showed that the PSO scheme gives preferable results in comparison to the ADVISOR
method. Therefore, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of HEVs can be effectively reduced without sacrificing dynamic performance

The vehicular illumination system has undergone considerable technological advances in recent decades such as the use of a Light Emitting Diode (LED) Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), which represents an industry breakthrough in lighting technology and is rapidly becoming one of the most important innovative technologies around the world in the lighting community. This paper presents AFS control alternatives using fuzzy logic (types 1 and 2) to determine its operating parameters taking into consideration the road conditions in the state of São Paulo (Brazil). Fuzzy logic is a well-known extension of the conventional (Boolean) logic that enables the treatment of uncertainty present in the information through the definition of intermediary membership values between the “completely true” and the “completely false”. This technique or modeling strategy is particularly important when a multi-parameter decision must be taken or the decisions are based on the human knowledge. In new slim torque converters, lock-up clutches are used to provide high fuel efficiency at low speed. However, the slimness
of the converters causes difficulty in heat dissipation, which may damage the friction material and shorten its life span.
A cooling hole in the lock-up piston reduces the heat but also reduces the torque because oil flows through the hole due to
the pressure difference between the two faces of the piston. In the early stages of the development of this type of torque
converter, designers must consider the minimum flow rate required to cool the friction material and the minimum torque capacity
required to transmit the engine torque. This research explored two methods of estimating these parameters. In the first method,
an estimation equation was derived by combining the response surface method with physical properties such as the centrifugal
force, a sudden expansion, a sudden contraction, and the steady flow energy equation. The second method involved the use of
an artificial neural network. The feasibility of the estimates based on statistics and on the artificial neural network were
confirmed in the design stage by comparing experimental and estimated data. An estimation program was created using the C#.Net

Among disaggregate vehicle ownership models, which model the number and/or type of vehicles owned at the household level, one can distinguish holdings models, which deal with the (optimal) household fleet at a single point in time, and transactions models. The latter type of model explains changes to the household fleet, such as replacement and disposal. The paper describes previous attempts at such dynamic models and sketches how a vehicle transactions model could look (as an example we discuss an application to The Netherlands).
