This paper presents an examination of the significance of residential sorting or self selection effects in understanding the impacts of the built environment on travel choices. Land use and transportation system attributes are often treated as exogenous variables in models of travel behavior. Such models ignore the potential self selection processes that may be at play wherein households and individuals choose to locate in areas or built environments that are consistent with their lifestyle and transportation preferences, attitudes, and values. In this paper, a simultaneous model of residential location choice and commute mode choice that accounts for both observed and unobserved taste variations that may contribute to residential self selection is estimated on a survey sample extracted from the 2000 San Francisco Bay Area household travel survey. Model results show that both observed and unobserved residential self selection effects do exist; however, even after accounting for these effects, it is found that built environment attributes can indeed significantly impact commute mode choice behavior. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of the model findings for policy planning.

This paper deals with the application of stochastic state estimators in vehicle dynamics control. It is often unrealistic to assume that all vehicle states and the disturbances acting on it can be measured. System states that cannot be measured directly, can be estimated by a Kalman Filter. The idea of the Kalman filter is to implement a model of the real system in an on-board computer in parallel with the system itself. A survey of the supply side of the Automated People Mover (APM) market over the past ten to fifteen years shows some significant trends. In the nineteen eighties, suppliers concentrated on designing, developing, and marketing unique technologies. Thus, each supplier tended to specialize in a single technology, with some variations in size and capacity. With the present growth of the APM market, several APM suppliers have developed, either through mergers or acquisitions, a more diversified range of technologies to meet a variety of system requirements in terms of capacity, service and budget considerations. As a result of this trend, the transit industry now has a full range of technologies that are well proven and capable of meeting the different needs, special operational requirements, and budgets of its potential clients.  相似文献

对停车政策类型缺乏广泛理解会导致对城市停车政策的混淆。通过对各地停车政策学术研究和实践应用的综述,指出以往的政策分类或缺乏完整性,过于简单、不准确,或无法洞悉差异背后的本质。并且没有一项研究能对每种停车政策及改革背后的政策思路进行分析。为弥补这些缺陷,提出一种关于停车政策新的分类方法。该方法清晰地指出不同停车改革政策背后思维模式的差异。通过回顾不同地区(国际和都市区内部地区)停车改革实践,验证分类方法的价值并提出改进措施。通过两个关键问题定义三种停车政策模式。每个模式对停车作为一种经济产品的本质提出不同的基础假设。通过第三个问题确立分类模式的第三个维度。新方法的提出能减少由于合并不同形式造成的停车争论偏好的混淆,包括假两难推理和偷换概念等关键替代形式。  相似文献

Spans occur when a pipeline is laid on a rough undulating seabed or when upheaval buckling occurs due to constrained thermal expansion. This not only results in static and dynamic loads on the flowline at span sections, but also generates vortex induced vibration (VIV), which can lead to fatigue issues. The phenomenon, if not predicted and controlled properly, will negatively affect pipeline integrity, leading to expensive remediation and intervention work. Span analysis can be complicated by: long span lengths, a large number of spans caused by a rough seabed, and multi-span interactions. In addition, the complexity can be more onerous and challenging when soil uncertainty, concrete degradation and unknown residual lay tension are considered in the analysis. This paper describes the latest developments and a .state-of-the-art. finite element analysis program that has been developed to simulate the span response of a flowline under complex boundary and loading conditions. Both VIV and direct wave loading are captured in the analysis and the results are sequentially used for the ultimate limit state (ULS) check and fatigue life calculation.  相似文献

Recent emphasis in comprehensive planning for coastal zone regions has created the need for more effective tools for information processing and analysis to aid policymakers and planners in developing strategies for preservation of coastal zone areas. New agencies with broad powers have been created at both state and federal levels to deal with growth management in large coastal regions. However, coastal zone management (CZM) agencies have not yet been able to deal effectively with development processes. A “holding action”; is being maintained in the face of mounting pressure by developers, while planners struggle to develop (1) a data base with sufficient detail for planning; (2) a fair and rapid process for reviewing environmental impact statements and granting of development permits; and (3) a system for making the development permit application process more routine. The key to success of the CZM process is the development of a management information system (MIS) created explicitly for CZM. The prototypical system designed by the authors combines graphic display capabilities (i.e., map display) with interactive on‐line computing and large storage‐capacity computers. Problems of data structure development are documented, together with problems of assembling a large‐scale, highly detailed data base. Of particular importance is the need for well‐developed objectives and specifications for the use of computer‐based data in resolving disputes on environmental issues. A set of objectives and specifications for a prototypical coastal zone MIS is developed. The system is described in detail, showing how its capabilities directly address policy questions formulated by coastal zone planners.  相似文献
