The wakes of high-speed passenger-only ferries that operated through Rich Passage, on the Seattle-Bremerton ferry route, caused
beach erosion and damage to habitat. A task was initiated to design a low-wake high-speed vessel using multi-fidelity CFD
based design optimization by using low-fidelity potential flow solvers for initial global design optimization and by using
URANS solvers for high-fidelity tuning of the optimized design. This simulation based design process involved a close collaboration
between ship designers, and hydrodynamics and CFD specialists, whose collective expertise guided the evolution of the design
based on both hydrodynamic and structural aspects. The initial hull shape optimization using potential flow code was carried
out by blending three different initial concepts provided by the designers. Subsequently, URANS was used to evaluate the potential
flow optimized hull and to further optimize the hull configuration parameters, namely, the centre-of-gravity, demihull spacing,
foil location, foil angle and slenderness ratio at different displacement conditions. The URANS based configuration optimization
also took into account the far field wakes’ energy spectrum with an objective of reducing the energetic, low frequency far
field wakes which are associated with beach flattening on the mixed sand and gravel beaches. Calculation of the far field
wake using URANS would require an unfeasibly large domain size; therefore, a Havelock code with a source distribution matching
the URANS calculated near field wave elevation was used to propagate the wakes into the far field. The end result of the optimization
was a design with significantly reduced far field wake, which is currently being built for experimental testing. 相似文献

船舶耐波性能预报计算过程复杂,会受到诸多设计变量的影响;且采用高精度商业软件如CFD预报船舶性能的计算代价非常高。文章采用拉丁超立方方法进行了设计空间抽样。定义了一个新的综合衡准指标来表达船舶耐波性能,即短期和长期作用下船舶非工作时间百分数。考虑了船舶耐波性能中的五个运动方向:横摇、纵摇、转艏、横荡和升沉。为提高船舶耐波性能计算效率,一种有效的近似建模方法—单参数Lagrangian 支持向量回归算法被用于训练并构建代理模型以预报船舶耐波性能,且该算法是由作者在过去的研究工作中首次提出。以海洋平台支援船(OSV)为例,采用SPL-SVR算法预报船舶耐波性能,并与基于NAPA计算仿真结果、人工神经网络和经典支持向量回归算法进行对比。该文考虑OSV的两种速度,建立了海洋平台支援船短期作用下非工作时间百分数的耐波性能响应面模型,结果显示采用SPL-SVR算法建立的船舶耐波性能响应面模型比较适合船型初步设计的工程实际应用,并具有较高的计算效率。 相似文献

The Columbia River plume is typical of large-scale, high discharge, mid-latitude plumes. In the absence of strong upwelling winds, freshwater from the river executes a rightward turn and forms an anticyclonic bulge before moving north along the Washington coast. In addition to the above dynamics, however, the river plume outflow is subject to large tides, which modify the structure of the plume in the region near the river mouth. Observations based on data acquired during a summer 2005 cruise indicate that the plume consists of four distinct water masses; source water at the lift-off point, and the tidal, re-circulating and far-field plumes. In contrast to most plume models that describe the discharge of low-salinity estuary water into ambient high-salinity coastal water, we describe the Columbia plume as the superposition of these four plume types.We focus primarily on a conceptual summary of the dynamics and mutual interaction of the tidal and re-circulating plumes. The new tidal plume flows over top of the re-circulating plume and is typically bounded by strong fronts. Soon after the end of ebb tide, it covers roughly 50–100% of the re-circulating plume surface area. The fronts may penetrate well below the re-circulating plume water and eventually spawn internal waves that mix the re-circulating plume further. The re-circulating plume persists throughout the tidal cycle and corresponds to a freshwater volume equivalent to 3–4 days of river discharge. Finally, the plume water masses are distinguished from one another in term of surface chlorophyll concentration, suggesting that the above classification may also describe different biological growth regimes. The low-salinity re-circulating plume serves as an extension of the estuary into the coastal ocean, or an “estuary at sea”, because residence times during periods of high river flow are greater than those in the estuary. 相似文献

This paper examines the claim that US bus transit productivity has declined in recent years. It does so with reference to a piecewise-linear best-practice (DEA) production frontier, computed for multi-modal bus transit between 1988 and 1992. Efficiency is measured both by a Russell (static) and Malmquist (dynamic) measure of productivity change. The principal finding is that, overall, bus transit efficiency has improved slightly over the period. 相似文献

This article is based on 183 819 port state control inspections from various port state control regimes for the time frame 1999 to 2004. Using binary logistic regression, we establish the differences of port state control inspections across several regimes, even though theory predicts there should be no significant differences in treatments of vessels. The results indicate that the differences towards the probability of detention are merely reflected by the differences in port states and the treatment of deficiencies and not necessarily by age, size, flag, class or owner as perceived by the industry and regulators. The analysis further shows that some differences can be found across ship types and regimes and that there appears to be room for further harmonization in the area of port state control. 相似文献

The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), with industry and university participation, conducted an assessment of the concept of isolating certain wastes (i.e., sewage sludge, fly ash from municipal incinerators, and contaminated dredged material) on the oceans' abyssal seafloor. In this assessment the advantages, disadvantages, and economic and environmental viability of potential engineering methods for achieving abyssal waste isolation were identified and compared. This paper presents background to the Abyssal Plains Waste Isolation (APWI) Project, describes the characteristics of the waste streams and quantities potentially available for disposal via the abyssal isolation concept, summarizes regulations affecting use of the abyssal seafloor for disposal of wastes, and introduces the technical and scientific premises underlying implementation of the concept. 相似文献

This paper details the CFD validation studies carried out as a prerequisite for multi-fidelity CFD-based design optimization
of high-speed passenger-only ferries aimed at reducing far-field wake energy that causes beach erosion. A potential flow program
(WARP) and a URANS program (CFDSHIP) were validated using full-scale measurements of resistance, sinkage, trim, and far-field
wake train obtained over a wide range of speeds for two high-speed semi-planing foil-assisted catamarans: Spirit (LOA-22 m)
and 1060 (LOA-17 m). This study posed a unique combination of challenges for CFD modeling: the foil appended geometry required
complicated surface overset grids, the effect of the waterjet and wind resistance had to be modeled, and a method had to be
devised to extrapolate the calculated near-field elevation to get the far-field wake train using Havelock sources. A more
concentrated effort was applied to the URANS verification and validation which forms the focus of this paper. The results
show that URANS is able to accurately predict the resistance and motions for both vessels when coupled with models that account
for the propulsors and air resistance. The overall accuracy of URANS for the performance analysis of the foil-assisted, semi-planing
catamarans was adequate to warrant its use as a tool for subsequent design and optimization of a new vessel with significantly
