Intercity bus (ICB), deviated fixed route transit (DFRT) and demand responsive transit (DRT) are three major modes of rural public transportation. This paper focuses on the characteristics and motivations of DFRT and DRT riders, compared to non-riders, in Tennessee. A rural DFRT rider survey, a rural DRT rider survey and a rural (non-rider) resident survey were performed. It is found that DFRT and DRT riders have similar demographics to ICB riders. The most common trip purpose for DFRT and DRT passengers is medical care, which is different from ICB trips. Ninety percent of the riders have difficulty finding alternative transportation modes, suggesting they are captive riders, not choice riders. Regression results indicate that people choosing transit modes tend to have lower personal and household income, own fewer cars, to not be homeowners, and be of non-white race. Rural residents who receive more education are more likely to be open-minded to use rural transit. 相似文献

The current article proposes an approach to accommodate flexible spatial dependency structures in discrete choice models in
general, and in unordered multinomial choice models in particular. The approach is applied to examine teenagers’ participation
in social and recreational activity episodes, a subject of considerable interest in the transportation, sociology, psychology,
and adolescence development fields. The sample for the analysis is drawn from the 2000 San Francisco Bay Area Travel Survey
(BATS) as well as other supplementary data sources. The analysis considers the effects of a variety of built environment and
demographic variables on teenagers’ activity behavior. In addition, spatial dependence effects (due to common unobserved residential
neighborhood characteristics as well as diffusion/interaction effects) are accommodated. The variable effects indicate that
parents’ physical activity participation constitutes the most important factor influencing teenagers’ physical activity participation
levels, In addition, part-time student status, gender, and seasonal effects are also important determinants of teenagers’
social-recreational activity participation. The analysis also finds strong spatial correlation effects in teenagers’ activity

This paper derives the energy efficiencies and CO2 emissions for electric, diesel and hydrogen traction for railway vehicles on a well-to-wheel basis, using the low heating value and high heating value of the enthalpy of oxidation of the fuel. The tank-to-wheel and well-to-tank efficiency are determined. Gaseous hydrogen has a WTW efficiency of 25% low heating value, if produced from methane and used in a fuel cell. This efficiency is similar to diesel and electric traction in the UK, US, and California. A reduction of about 19% in CO2 is achieved when hydrogen gas is used in a fuel cell compared to diesel traction, and a 3% reduction compared to US electricity. 相似文献

Recent experience with the design of bus services in Santiago, Chile, seems to confirm Jansson's (1980) assertion regarding
observed planned bus frequency and size being too low and too large, respectively. We offer an explanation based upon the
relation between cost coverage, pricing and optimal design variables. We recall that average social cost decreases with patronage,
which generates an optimal monetary fare below the average operators' cost, inducing an optimal subsidy. Then we compare optimal
frequency and bus size—those that minimize total social costs—with those that minimize operators' costs only. We show that
an active constraint on operators' expenses is equivalent to diminish the value of users' time in the optimal design problem.
Inserting this property back in the optimal pricing scheme, we conclude that a self-financial constraint, if active, always
provokes an inferior solution, a smaller frequency and, under some circumstances, larger than optimal buses.

In this paper techniques for scheduling additional train services (SATS) are considered as is train scheduling involving general time window constraints, fixed operations, maintenance activities and periods of section unavailability. The SATS problem is important because additional services must often be given access to the railway and subsequently integrated into current timetables. The SATS problem therefore considers the competition for railway infrastructure between new services and existing services belonging to the same or different operators. The SATS problem is characterised as a hybrid job shop scheduling problem with time window constraints. To solve this problem constructive algorithm and meta-heuristic scheduling techniques that operate upon a disjunctive graph model of train operations are utilised. From numerical investigations the proposed framework and associated techniques are tested and shown to be effective. 相似文献

Driver drowsiness is a major safety concern, especially among commercial vehicle drivers, and is responsible for thousands
of accidents and numerous fatalities every year. The design of a drowsiness detection system is based on identifying suitable
driver-related and/or vehicle-related variables that are correlated to the driver’s level of drowsiness. Among different candidates,
vehicle control variables seem to be more promising since they are unobtrusive, easy to implement, and cost effective. This
paper focuses on in-depth analysis of different driver-vehicle control variables, e.g., steering angle, lane keeping, etc.
that are correlated with the level of drowsiness. The goal is to find relationships and to characterize the effect of a driver’s
drowsiness on measurable vehicle or driving variables and set up a framework for developing a drowsiness detection system.
Several commercial drivers were tested in a simulated environment and different variables were recorded. This study shows
that drowsiness has a major impact on lane keeping and steering control behavior. The correlation of the number and type of
accidents with the level of drowsiness was also examined. Significant patterns in lateral position variations and steering
corrections were observed, and two phases of drowsiness-related degradation in steering control were identified. The two steering

The nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77.69 K were measured for two samples of activated carbon fibers and their microstructures were investigated. Among established isotherm equations, the Dubinin-Radushkevich equation showed the best agreement with the experimental data, while the Langmuir equation showed a large deviation when employed at low relative pressures. The MP method, t-method and αs-method were used to analyze the pore size distribution. The calculated average pore widths and BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface areas for the sample A-13 were 0.86 nm and 1 286.60 m2/g, while for the sample A-16, they were 0.82 nm and 1 490.64 m2/g. The sample with larger pore width was more suitable to be used as additive in chemical heat pumps, while the other one could be used as adsorbent in adsorption refrigeration systems. 相似文献

Motor vehicle emission factors are generally derived from driving tests mimicking steady state conditions or transient drive cycles. Neither of these test conditions, however, completely represents real world driving conditions. In particular, they fail to determine emissions generated during the accelerating phase – a condition in which urban buses spend much of their time. We analyse and compare the results of time-dependant emission measurements conducted on diesel and compressed natural gas buses during an urban driving cycle on a chassis dynamometer and we derive power-law expressions relating carbon dioxide emission factors to the instantaneous speed while accelerating from rest.
