This paper analyzes the interdependency across two critical infrastructures of transportation and motor fueling supply chains, and investigates how vulnerability to climatic extremes in a fueling infrastructure hampers the resilience of a transportation system. The proposed model features both a bi-stage mathematical program and an extension to an ‘α-reliable mean-excess’ regret model. The former aspect allows decision makers to optimize the pre-disaster asset prepositioning against the maximum post-disaster system resilience. The latter aspect of the proposed model devalues the impact of ‘low-probability, high-cost’ sub-scenarios upon model results. The model reveals the reliance of post-disaster urban mobility on the interdependent critical infrastructure of motor fueling supply chains. The results also suggest how investment in the fueling infrastructure’s vulnerable elements protects urban mobility while the transportation network is stressed or under attack. 相似文献

The present paper investigated and analyzed swirler material consisting of mild steel which was subjected to service for the period of one year in a 30 MW marine boiler. Due to the presence of high temperatures in the furnace coupled with the corrosive marine environment swirler material showed accelerated degradation and material wastage. An investigation into the feasibility of manufacturing the existing swirler with an alternate material or coating the swirler material with a thermal barrier coating was undertaken. Based on their properties and performance, SS 304 and SS 316 were proposed as the replacement materials for the swirler. The other alternative of coating the existing swirlers with a form thermal barrier coating to observe for any improvement in their performance at elevated temperatures was also tested. Stellite, which is a Ni-Co based coating, was carried out on the MS samples and the same were exposed to same temperatures mentioned above. The performance of the available options was evaluated with respect to the grain structure of the material, the hardness value of the materials and deterioration at elevated temperatures. Investigation showed the proposed materials/coatings like SS 304, SS 316 and Stellite coating revealed that SS 316 is the material best suited for high temperature application. 相似文献

Information is effectively the same as a change in uncertainty perceived by an observer. This paper adopts the strict definition of information from Shannon’s Information Theory and provides procedures for quantifying effective provision of traveler information, considering it to be equivalent to the change of perceived uncertainty. The proposed method combines a cognitive grouping theory and an information learning scheme at an individual’s level to evaluate the dynamic information provision in the unit of a bit. Such numerical quantification can be meaningful in evaluating alternatives with more fine-grained information provision strategies and understanding their equity impact. Quantifying information in a manner consistent with Information Theory also provides a ‘shared language’ that facilitates more constructive discussion among stakeholders from different backgrounds. The case study is conducted on a heterogeneous dynamic traffic network near Downtown Los Angeles for evaluating different alternatives of a proposed dynamic message board in terms of its location and dynamic content. 相似文献

This paper examines the discretionary time-use of children, including the social context of children’s participations. Specifically,
the paper examines participation and time investment in in-home leisure as well as five different types of out-of-home discretionary
activities: (1) shopping, (2) social, (3) meals, (4) passive recreation (i.e., physically inactive recreation, such as going
to the movies or a concert), and (5) active recreation (i.e., physically active recreation, such as playing tennis or running).
The social context of children’s activity participation is also examined by focusing on the accompanying individuals in children’s
activity engagement. The accompanying arrangement is classified into one of six categories: (1) alone, (2) with mother and
no one else, (3) with father and no one else, (4) with both mother and father, and no one else, (5) with other individuals,
but no parents, and (6) with other individuals and one or both parents. The utility-theoretic Multiple Discrete-Continuous
Extreme Value (MDCEV) is employed to model time-use in one or more activity purpose–company type combinations. The data used
in the analysis is drawn from the 2002 Child Development Supplement (CDS) to the U.S. Panel Study Income Dynamics (PSID).
The results from the model can be used to examine the time-use choices of children, as well as to assess the potential impacts
of urban and societal policies on children’s activity participation and time-use decisions. Our findings also emphasize the
need to collect, in future travel surveys, more extensive and higher quality data capturing the intra- and inter-household
interactions between individuals (including children). To our knowledge, the research in this paper is the first transportation-related
study to rigorously and comprehensively analyze the social dimension of children’s activity participation.

Fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations in the world. Numerous research studies have been carried out to improve fishing safety from many different perspectives. Several of these studies focused on the relationship between environmental factors, climate change effects, and fishing safety. This paper aims to suggest a knowledge mobilization structure that translates findings of this type of research into input of evidence-based decision making and consequently improve and update fishing policies with respect to fishing safety and environmental conditions. Significant safety factors extracted from related literature are stability of vessels, fisheries management, safety equipment, communication, insurance, training, safety information and culture, weather forecasts, fatigue, and search and rescue planning. The paper then reviews policies related to these factors to examine if they address extreme environmental conditions and climate change effects. The paper presents recommendations to improve general fishing safety with respect to short- and long-term environmental considerations. 相似文献

A mathematical model for the steering control of an automobile is described. The structure of the model derives from linear optimal discrete time preview control theory but it is non-linear. Its parameter values are obtained by heuristic methods, using insight gained from the linear optimal control theory. The driver model is joined to a vehicle dynamics model and the path tracking performance is demonstrated, using moderate manoeuvring and racing speeds. The model is shown to be capable of excellent path following and to be robust against changes in the vehicle dynamics. Application to the simulation of manoeuvres specified by an ideal vehicle path and further development of the model to formalise the derivation of its parameter values and to put it to other uses are discussed. 相似文献

In this study, a variable geometry active suspension system is considered. Actuation is employed to vary the leverage ratio between spring/damper unit and road wheel assembly. Since actuation is substantially perpendicular to the main suspension unit forces, work is primarily done only against frictional resistances to motion and the systems have inherently low force and energy requirements. Mechanical design and control system design involving proportional/differential elements or neural networks are discussed. System performance in self-levelling, free vibrations and manoeuvring of a theoretical vehicle are calculated. Good control of roll angle and jacking responses are predicted and energy economy is confirmed by these trials, which include a detailed consideration and modelling of the electrical actuators. The results reinforce the notion that variable geometry schemes have practical applications potential and are worthy of further research effort. 相似文献

An active suspension with preview is developed for the rear axle of a commercial vehicle. The obtained improvements are promising and justify further investigation of the more feasible semi-active suspensions with preview. The inherent non-linearity of semi-active suspensions with switching shock absorbers and the need for controllers that can handle a broad class of control objectives has led to the development of several numerical control methods for both multi-level and continuously variable shock absorbers. The most promising control method and shock absorber type are selected and mounted in a test vehicle. Some first experimental results are discussed. 相似文献
