This paper is the second invstigation on the effect of fuel stratification on flame propagation. In the previous work, the
characteristics under the no port-generated swirl condition, i.e., the conventional case was studied. In this work, the flame
development under the low swirl condition was considered. For this purpose, the initial flame development and propagation
were visualized under different axially stratified states in a modified optical single cylinder SI engine. The images were
captured by an intensified CCD camera through the quartz window mounted in the piston. Stratification was controlled by the
combination of the port swirl ratio and injection timing. These were averaged and processed to characterize the flame propagation.
The flame stability was estimated by the weighted average of flame area and luminosity. The stability was also evaluated through
the standard deviation of flame area and propagation distance and through the mean absolute deviation of the propagating direction.
The results show that the flame-flow interaction determines the direction of flame propagation and that the governing roles
of the two factors vary according to the stratified state and the location in the cylinder. In addition, the flame development
and the initial flame stability are strongly dependent on the stratified conditions, and the initial flame stability is closely
related to the engine stability and lean misfire limit. Lastly, there is no essential difference in gasoline and CNG flame

Traffic assignment is usually determined solely on the basis of minimum travel time through the network. The present study on traffic assignment has taken into account not only traffic performance but also air quality over the street. A simple model of highway air pollution is developed by considering macroscopic material balance of polluted air mass over a segment of a highway that passes through an urban area, A new traffic assignment scheme has been developed based on the air pollution model. This study estimates a random parameter (mixed) logit model for active transportation (walk and bicycle) choices for work trips in the New York City (using 2010–2011 Regional Household Travel Survey Data). We explored the effects of traffic safety, walk–bike network facilities, and land use attributes on walk and bicycle mode choice decision in the New York City for home-to-work commute. Applying the flexible econometric structure of random parameter models, we capture the heterogeneity in the decision making process and simulate scenarios considering improvement in walk–bike infrastructure such as sidewalk width and length of bike lane. Our results indicate that increasing sidewalk width, total length of bike lane, and proportion of protected bike lane will increase the likelihood of more people taking active transportation mode This suggests that the local authorities and planning agencies to invest more on building and maintaining the infrastructure for pedestrians. Further, improvement in traffic safety by reducing traffic crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists, will increase the likelihood of taking active transportation modes. Our results also show positive correlation between number of non-motorized trips by the other family members and the likelihood to choose active transportation mode. This paper quantifies the potential environmental benefit of short sea shipping. Critical strategic issues relevant to formulating
public policy are developed. Coastal shipping has traditionally been a major sector of the maritime industry. This continues
to be the case in the European Union, but the sector has diminished in relative importance in North America as the transport
industry has become increasingly dominated by less environmentally-friendly interstate trucking and railroads. Congestion
threatens to overwhelm overland carriage and limit economic growth. An alternative strategy is to revitalize coastal shipping
as short sea shipping to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance economic development by maintaining freight flow efficiency.
Because ship transport offers higher fuel economy and lower emission of harmful pollutants, the environmental benefits of
