Concepts of strategic commercial location: the case of container ports   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A World that shrinks with progressive improvements in transportation and communications is a fact of 20th century life. The shrinking process can produce new patterns and perceptions of strategic location. In this paper we are looking specifically at nodes in transportaion system. In the ligth of transportation progress, we re-consider some of the time-worn ideas about centrality, accessibility, gateway locaations, junction, transit points, and the like. Do some of these notions become irrelevant in the modern transport age? Is it a questions f shifting geographical scale? Do we need more sophisticated concepts of strategic location? We suggest the answer 'yes' to all three questions. Our illustrations come from an examination of the world's top-ranked container ports. We give primary emphasis to the external geographical relationships of the ports, that is to situational aspects (not to say, however, that sitefeatures are inconsequetial). We are interested in the seaports users' —i.e., carriers and shippers—perceptions of strategic location. Readily available container throughput data provide and initial platform for empirical research but also give proof that some commercial interests find these ports strategically important to their system.  相似文献

Detailed Investigations of the Steady State Turning of Single Track Vehicles

In the paper the steady state turning of single track vehicles on a horizontal, even road is investigated, supposing the air to be at rest. The vehicle model used has six degrees of freedom: rolling, yawing, pitching and bouncing of the vehicle, rotation of the front wheel system (steering) relatively to the main frame and distortion of the rear wheel system due to limited stiffness of its linkage, and also takes into account wind drag and gyroscopic effects generated by wheels and other vehicle components. A special importance is given to the geometry of the vehicle

The results show a comparison of two types of motorcycles with different geometries and tires. To characterize the vehicle behaviour the roll, side slip and steering angle as functions of the normal acceleration are used. A more detailed study in respect to the steering torque is added.  相似文献

This paper derives several well-known spatial models in a framework based upon the laws of conditional probability analysis. In particular, it relates the structure of some existing models of trip distribution, elementary residential location and residential location with capacity constraints, to either the multinomial or hypergeometric probability distributions. The major changes from traditional methods for developing these models deal with the derivation and form of the objective function for each interaction model. This alternative analysis reaches a wider audience than that only familiar with entropy methods and leads to several improvements in generality. Further, when population constraints were imposed on residential location models, it was found that the model which developed naturally from the approach taken in the paper contained as a special case the model proposed by Dacey and Norcliffe and not the Wilson model.  相似文献

Dynamic Interaction of Railway Train and Bridges   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
An analytical method for obtaining the dymanic responses of a train of locomotives moving on bridges is presented. The ratio of dynamic response to maximum static response is called the amplification factor, and its maximum absolute value minus one is called the impact. Each four-axle locomotive is modelled as a rigid body with three degrees of freedom: bounce, pitch and roll, and with a suspension system consisting of springs mounted on wheels. The locomotives are assumed to be connected by frictionless joints to form the train. The bridge is modelled as a three dimensional structure, with the masses lumped at the truss joints. All joints, including the floor beam connections, are assumed to be rigid, except those for the bracing members, which are assumed to be hinged. Vertical displacements are considered as the only dynamic degree of freedom. The mathematical formulation is described briefly, and a numerical example is given. Locomotive and truss member properties, together with stresses in some typical members, are given in the tables. The amplification factors of the responses in some typical bridge members are shown in the figures.  相似文献

The dense overflow across the Denmark Strait is investigated with hydrographic and hydro-chemical data and the water mass composition of the Denmark Strait Overflow Water (DSOW) is determined by multivariate analysis. Hydrographical properties, the transient tracers CFC-11 and CFC-12, oxygen and nutrients are utilized for the water mass definitions. Distribution and characteristics of water masses north of Denmark Strait are described, the important water masses at the sill and the variability on weekly time-scales are discussed, and the entrainment and mixing of water into the overflow plume in the northern Irminger Basin is calculated. The analysis indicates that water masses both from the Nordic Seas and the Arctic Ocean are important for the formation of DSOW. It is found that water masses transported with the East Greenland Current make up about 75% of the overflow at the sill. The overflow at, and shortly south of, the sill is inhomogeneous with a low-salinity component dominated by Polar Intermediate Water. The high-salinity component of the overflow is mainly of Arctic origin. The water mass composition, and the short-term variability for 7 repeats of sections close to the sill are described, and these illustrate that the overflow is in fact a composite of a number of water masses with different formation and transport histories. This indicate that the overflow is a robust feature, but that it responds to variations in the circulation or atmospheric forcing that influences the formation of intermediate and deep water masses within the Arctic Mediterranean and the North Atlantic. At a section about 400 km south of the sill the overflow is well mixed and modified by entrainment of, mainly, Iceland–Scotland Overflow Water and Labrador Sea Water, together constituting 30% of the overflow plume. The entrainment of Middle Irminger Water dominates shortly downstream of the sill, before the overflow plume reaches too deep but the entrainment seems to be intermittent in time.  相似文献
