We have evaluated the impact of assimilating chlorophyll, nitrate, phosphate, silicate and ammonium into a coupled 1D hydrodynamic ecosystem model (GOTM-ERSEM) in an upwelling influenced estuary. The assimilation method chosen is the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF), which has been demonstrated to improve field estimates of key variables (chlorophyll, nutrients) for bulk algal bloom prediction. The 1D model has been set up for a central station inside the Ría de Vigo (Spain). Data from bi-weekly surveys are used to constrain the model. Temperature and salinity profiles are used to ensure the correct representation of the water structure through a relaxation scheme. Chlorophyll extracts and nutrients at three depths are assimilated sequentially during 1 year simulation (1991). The assimilation period includes episodes of active upwelling and downwelling. All five assimilated variables are successfully constrained and represent a large improvement on the reference simulation (without assimilation). Small divergences can be related to poorly resolved physical processes in the model. The assimilation was further evaluated by comparing observed biomass partitioning with model results. Diatoms accounted for the largest biomass update and the largest improvement in terms of percentage of variance explained (R2). This is particularly significant as they represent the 46% of the yearly integrated observed biomass of the planktonic autotrophs. Nonetheless the R2 value was low for all phytoplankton groups. Bacteria and nanoflagellates showed an improvement with respect to their yearly Root Mean Square (RMS), while the other functional groups worsen or remained unaffected. Chlorophyll assimilation was responsible for most of the impact on the phytoplankton biomass with small contributions from the silicate. It had minor impact on the updates of nutrients which in turn corrected the state variables related to the detrital pool. In this current setting, combined assimilation of chlorophyll and nutrients is not sufficient to produce a skillful simulation of the phytoplankton succession.  相似文献

This is the first contribution to the copepod production in Venezuelan tropical savannas. Total abundance, biomass, production and mean P/B ratio of nauplii, copepodids and adults were determined in interdaily samples from a flooded, embanked savanna during February and March (end of dry season), and May (beginning of rainy season). Highest values of biomass and total production were recorded during dry season (61.5 mg m−3, 153.8 mg m−3 day−1, respectively), compared to the rainy season (5.6 mg m−3, 45.9 mg m−3 day−1). The last values are related to a low population density found during rainy season. Highest production were observed in copepodids at the end of the dry season. Significant differences of production between nauplii and copepodid stages, as well as between nauplii and adults, were also found.  相似文献

The evolution of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a non-axenic batch culture of the marine diatom Thalassiosira tumida was studied by hydrophobic fractionation during a three month experiment. DOM was fractionated with XAD-2 resin into hydrophobic (acid and neutral, “humic”) and hydrophilic fractions. The combined amino acid contents of unfractionated filtered seawater, XAD-fractions and particulate material were determined during the growth, stationary and degradation phases of the culture, and variations related to changes in dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in XAD-fractions, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, algal and bacterial biomass. XAD-fractionation enabled the discrimination of simultaneously ocurring release and uptake of organic nitrogenous compounds: During the diatom growth there was a net increase of tolal DON concentrations, which was mostly accounted for by the hydrophilic fraction. A concurrent heterotrophic uptake of combined amino acids and other non-amino acid organic nitrogen was discernible by the decrease of their concentrations in the hydrophobic fractions. In the stationary phase, during the prevailing net consumption of total DON, the production of algal exudates could be detected in the hydrophobic fractions, while uptake mainly involved non-amino acid organic nitrogen from the hydrophilic fraction. During the degradation phase, after two months part of the particulate amino acid pool was transformed into hydrophilic DON, which in contrast to the stationary phase, was not adequate for supporting sustained bacterial growth. This suggests that the generation of recalcitrant substances may begin in the hydrophilic fraction of DOM. A slight increase of the hydrophobic acid fraction was indicative of the incipient formation of humic substances. XAD-2 was able to adsorb substances from fast changing DOM pools and thus should be a useful tool in studies concerned with phytoplankton and bacterial dynamics.  相似文献

Growth in container liner traffic has been high for several decades and current growth rates are expected to continue, putting pressure on ports and liner companies to increase investment. Several factors are pushing up the capacity of new buildings, and bigger, rather than more, ships alleviate pressure on ports. But ship operating cost benefits will be eroded unless cargo handling performance can be upgraded. Because of physical inhibitions in existing facilities the recent pace at which lines have increased the size of the biggest ships operating seems likely to plateau in the next few years.  相似文献

This paper investigates the transportation network reliability based on the information provided by detectors installed on some links. A traffic flow simulator (TFS) model is formulated for assessing the network reliability (in terms of travel time reliability), in which the variation of perceived travel time error and the fluctuations of origin-destination (OD) demand are explicitly considered. On the basis of prior OD demand and partial updated detector data, the TFS can estimate the link flows for the whole network together with link/path travel times, and their variance and covariance. The travel time reliability by OD pair can also be assessed and the OD matrix can be updated simultaneously. A Monte Carlo based algorithm is developed to solve the TFS model. The application of the proposed TFS model is illustrated by a numerical example.  相似文献

The road profile is usually considered to be a random process x ( d ), where x is the road height and d is the distance along the road. As the vehicle travels along the road with velocity v , the random process x ( d ) is converted to a random process x ( t ) which is input to the vehicle suspension via the tyre. The random process x ( d ) is usually described in terms of its power spectral density as a function of frequency in either radians or cycles per unit distance. However, there are several different ways of defining power spectral density, and this makes it difficult to compare published data without knowing how the power spectral density has been defined. Processes involved in erosion, transport and deposition of cohesive materials are studied in a transect from shallow (16 m) to deep (47 m) water of the SW Baltic Sea. The wave- and current-induced energy input to the seabed in shallow water is high with strong variability and suspended matter concentrations may double within a few hours. Primary settling fluxes (from sedimentation traps) are less than 10 g m−2 day−1, whereas resuspension fluxes (evaluated from sedimentation flux gradients) are 15–20 times higher and the residence time for suspended matter in the water column is 1–2 days. Settling velocities of aggregates are on average six times higher than for individual particles resulting in an enhanced downward transport of organic matter. Wave-induced resuspension (four to six times per month) takes place with higher shear stresses on the bottom than current-induced resuspension (three to five times per month). The short residence time in the water column and the frequent resuspension events provide a fast operating benthic–pelagic coupling. Due to the high-energy input, the shallow water areas are nondepositional on time scales longer than 1–2 weeks. The sediment is sand partly covered by a thin fluff layer during low-energy periods. The presence of the fluff layer keeps the resuspension threshold very low (<0.023 N m−2) throughout the year. Evaluated from 3-D sediment transport modeling, transport from shallow to deep water is episodic. The net main directions are towards the Arkona Basin (5.5×105 t per year) and the Bornholm Basin (3.7×105 t per year). Energy input to the bottom in deep water is low and takes place much less frequently. Wave-induced resuspension occurs on average once per month. Residence time of particles (based on radioactive isotopes) in the water column is half a year and the sediment accumulation rate is 2.2 mm year−1 in the Arkona Basin.  相似文献

The distribution of mesopelagic copepods between 250 and 1000 m depth was studied along a transect off the coast of Villefranche-sur-Mer in June 1991 by means of a BIONESS multiple-net sampler. Among the most abundant species at all stations were Pleuromamma gracilis, Paraeuchaeta acuta and overwintering Calanus helgolandicus CV copepodites, each species inhabiting different depth layers with maximum abundances in the 250–350 m, 450–550 m and the 700–850 m layer, respectively. Cluster analysis of the vertical distribution of all species caught revealed three distinct strata (‘TOP', ‘INTERMEDIATE', ‘BOTTOM') consisting of characteristic species that occurred in the same stratum at all stations. Differences in total abundances of the species assemblage occupying each layer are discussed with regard to predation pressure by mesopelagic macroplanktonic crustaceans and fish. We show that each stratum is characterized by distinct trophic interactions and life strategies, which play an important role in the structuring of mesopelagic zooplankton communities.  相似文献
