Seafarer health and well-being has long been a concern in the shipping industry because of the unique characteristics of working at sea. This paper aims to identify the role of burnout in seafarer health and well-being and its effect on safety. In particular, we differentiated seafarer burnout into personal and work-related burnout to reflect the ambiguous distinction between rest and work in seafarers’ job environment. We also investigate the effectiveness of emotion regulation for seafarers to reduce burnout. This study proposes a conceptual framework to identify the causal relationship between occupational stress, sleepiness, emotion regulation, burnout, and incidents at sea. To verify the proposed framework, scales were adapted from established scales in the literature; a cross-sectional survey was also conducted to collect empirical data for analysis with path and simultaneous equation models. The analysis results revealed that personal and work-related burnout in seafarers are mutually affected; however, only work-related burnout exerts a direct effect on incidents. Reappraisal is an effective emotion regulation strategy in seafarers to reduce personal burnout, but not work-related burnout. Occupational stress and sleepiness exert positive effects on both personal and work-related burnout; yet, their effect on incidents is mediated by work-related burnout.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Incidents are a major source of traffic congestion and can lead to long and unpredictable delays, deteriorating traffic operations and adverse environmental impacts. The emergence of connected vehicles and communication technologies has enabled travelers to use real-time traffic information. The ability to exchange traffic information among vehicles has tremendous potential impacts on network performance especially in the case of non-recurrent congestion. To this end, this paper utilizes a microscopic simulation model of traffic in El Paso, Texas to investigate the impacts of incidents on traffic operation and fuel consumption at different market penetration rates (MPR) of connected vehicles. Several scenarios are implemented and tested to determine the impacts of incidents on network performance in an urban area. The scenarios are defined by changing the duration of incidents and the number of lanes closed. This study also shows how communication technology affects network performance in response to congestion. The results of the study demonstrate the potential effectiveness of connected vehicle technology in improving network performance. For an incident with a duration of 900?s and MPR of 80%, total fuel consumption and total travel time decreased by approximately 20%; 26% was observed in network-wide travel time and fuel consumption at 100% MPR.  相似文献

为了及时发现隧道内交通安全隐患,尽量减少交通事故的发生,针对现有隧道交通事件预测方法在实际应用中的不足,引入时间序列法,建立了隧道交通事件时间序列预测模型,该模型可以快捷地得出事故影响因素的预测值,预测出道路交通事件总体发展趋势。实验证明,模型能很好地适应于道路交通事故预测,同时具备了资料较少,建模简单,计算快捷等优点。  相似文献

This study aims to develop a maximum likelihood regression tree-based model to predict subway incident delays, which are major negative impacts caused by subway incidents from the commuter’s perspective. Using the Hong Kong subway incident data from 2005 and 2009, a tree comprising 10 terminal nodes is selected to predict subway incident delays in a case study. An accelerated failure time (AFT) analysis is conducted separately for each terminal node. The goodness-of-fit results show that our developed model outperforms the traditional AFT models with fixed and random effects because it can overcome the heterogeneity problem and over-fitting effects. The developed model is beneficial for subway engineers looking to propose effective strategies for reducing subway incident delays, especially in super-large-sized cities with huge public travel demand.  相似文献

This paper develops an efficient probabilistic model for estimating route travel time variability, incorporating factors of time‐of‐day, inclement weather, and traffic incidents. Estimating the route travel time distribution from historical link travel time data is challenging owing to the interactions among upstream and downstream links. Upon creating conditional probability function for each link travel time, we applied Monte Carlo simulation to estimate the total travel time from origin to destination. A numerical example of three alternative routes in the City of Buffalo shows several implications. The study found that weather conditions, except for snow, incur minor impact on off‐peak and weekend travel time, whereas peak travel times suffer great variations under different weather conditions. On top of that, inclement weather exacerbates route travel time reliability, even when mean travel time increases moderately. The computation time of the proposed model is linearly correlated to the number of links in a route. Therefore, this model can be used to obtain all the origin to destination travel time distributions in an urban region. Further, this study also validates the well‐known near‐linear relation between the standard deviation of travel time per unit distance and the corresponding mean value under different weather conditions. Freeway service patrols, an increasingly popular choice in combating the effects of traffic incidents on freeway operations, have been known to reduce incident response and clearance time. This reduction can help alleviate the delay due to non-recurrent, incident related congestion, as well as lower the chance of secondary crashes. While much work has been done in the direction of identifying the benefits stemming from the delay savings by freeway patrols, little has been done to identify the potential savings from lowering the likelihood of secondary crash occurrence. Using a 5-year incident data base from the Borman Expressway, we develop logistic regression models to examine what primary crash characteristics are likely to influence the likelihood of a secondary crash. The findings suggest that clearance time, season, type of vehicle involved, and lateral location of the primary crash significantly influence the likelihood of secondary crash occurrence. Further, the 1995 potential benefit from secondary crash reduction was $568,080 exceeding the 1995 Hoosier Helper freeway service patrol program costs by a factor of 1.38. Given a better understanding of what contributes to secondary crash occurrence, various components of incident management can be operated at a higher level of cost-effectiveness.  相似文献
