Identification of communities in urban mobility networks using multi-layer graphs of network traffic
This paper proposes a novel approach to identify the pockets of activity or the community structure in a city network using multi-layer graphs that represent the movement of disparate entities (i.e. private cars, buses and passengers) in the network. First, we process the trip data corresponding to each entity through a Voronoi segmentation procedure which provides a natural null model to compare multiple layers in a real world network. Second, given nodes that represent Voronoi cells and link weights that define the strength of connection between them, we apply a community detection algorithm and partition the network into smaller areas independently at each layer. The partitioning algorithm returns geographically well connected regions in all layers and reveal significant characteristics underlying the spatial structure of our city. Third, we test an algorithm that reveals the unified community structure of multi-layer networks, which are combinations of single-layer networks coupled through links between each node in one network layer to itself in other layers. This approach allows us to directly compare the resulting communities in multiple layers where connection types are categorically different. 相似文献

Automated vehicles represent a technology that promises to increase mobility for many groups, including the senior population (those over age 65) but also for non-drivers and people with medical conditions. This paper estimates bounds on the potential increases in travel in a fully automated vehicle environment due to an increase in mobility from the non-driving and senior populations and people with travel-restrictive medical conditions. In addition, these bounding estimates indicate which of these demographics could have the greatest increases in annual vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and highlight those age groups and genders within these populations that could contribute the most to the VMT increases. The data source is the 2009 National Household Transportation Survey (NHTS), which provides information on travel characteristics of the U.S. population. The changes to light-duty VMT are estimated by creating and examining three possible travel demand wedges. In demand wedge one, non-drivers are assumed to travel as much as the drivers within each age group and gender. Demand wedge two assumes that the driving elderly (those over age 65) without medical conditions will travel as much as a younger population within each gender. Demand wedge three makes the assumption that working age adult drivers (19–64) with medical conditions will travel as much as working age adults without medical conditions within each gender, while the driving elderly with medical any travel-restrictive conditions will travel as much as a younger demographic within each gender in a fully automated vehicle environment. The combination of the results from all three demand wedges represents an upper bound of 295 billion miles or a 14% increase in annual light-duty VMT for the US population 19 and older. Since traveling has other costs besides driving effort, these estimates serve to bound the potential increase from these populations to inform the scope of the challenges, rather than forecast specific VMT scenarios. 相似文献

Using a variety of data sources, decentralisation of population and employment in four Dutch urban areas (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht) over the last 20 years, is analysed. It is found that suburbanisation, plus an ever growing car share, has increased the number of external journeys related to the metropolitan cities enormously. With the use of the 1982 National Travel Survey, current travel patterns in and around the metropolitan cities are studied: the importance of external trips for urban transport planning shows clearly. They account for about half the number of city related car trips, and for nearly three quarters of the total vehicle kilometres of travel within the city.(requests for reprints) 相似文献

This study explores the relationships between adoption and consideration of three travel-related strategy bundles (travel
maintaining/increasing, travel reducing, and major location/lifestyle change), linking them to a variety of explanatory variables.
The data for this study are the responses to a fourteen-page survey returned by nearly 1,300 commuting workers living in three
distinct San Francisco Bay area neighborhoods in May 1998. We first identified patterns of adoption and consideration among
the bundles, using pairwise correlation tests. The test results indicate that those who have adopted coping strategies continue
to seek for improvements across the spectrum of generalized cost, but perhaps most often repeating the consideration of a
previously-adopted bundle. Furthermore, we developed a multivariate probit model for individuals’ simultaneous consideration
of the three bundles. It is found that in addition to the previous adoption of the bundles, qualitative and quantitative Mobility-related
variables, Travel Attitudes, Personality, Lifestyle, Travel Liking, and Sociodemographics significantly affect individual
consideration of the strategy bundles. Overall, the results of this study give policy makers and planners insight into understanding
the dynamic nature of individuals’ responses to travel-related strategies, as well as differences between the responses to
congestion that are assumed by policy makers and those that are actually adopted by individuals.

ABSTRACTThis study undertakes one of the first empirical attempts to investigate and contribute a set of innovative findings to investor herding behavior and herding spillover effects in globally listed shipping company stock returns. Distinguishing between OECD and Non-OECD markets, herding behavior is tested on a diversified set of shipping companies traded in international equity markets, over different business cycle phases, financial crises, and external shocks. A set of dynamic models, well established in the relevant behavioral finance literature, is implemented. Empirical evidence indicates investor herding behavior in shipping stock returns and herding spillover effects between different shipping sectors, albeit not robust in all cases. These challenging findings can have a material impact on efficient investment and financing decisions of shipping market players. 相似文献

AbstractIn transportation, informal transport refers mainly to the use of paratransit services in the developing world. In this paper we argue that informal travel may include, in addition to mode and users, also other travel pattern elements, such as trip planning, structure, purpose, and destination. Each of these can be placed along an axis ranging from formal manifestations to informal ones, thus creating a ‘formality scale’. Moreover, these elements may be combined in numerous ways, creating a multitude of travel patterns that may be placed all along the formality scale. After providing a definition of formal, semi-formal, and informal travel and characterizing travel patterns according to the formality scale we identify population groups which exemplify semi-formal and informal travel patterns. Next, we analyze the 2009 US National Household Travel Survey, which suggests informal travel may be growing. This leads to a discussion on various factors that might affect travel formality. Most notably, the growing use of information and communication technologies may be shifting travel toward the informal end of the axis. In turn, this might affect trip symmetry, which may result in further effects on the transportation system. 相似文献
