Controllable dampers using electrorheological (ER) fluids have attracted considerable interest in recent years. They are proposed for use in semi-active suspensions for ground vehicles. The main advantages of ER fluid dampers are their fast response, ease of control, simple construction and low power requirements. This paper describes the development and testing of a high-voltage supply unit for modulating the damping force of an ER fluid damper. Experimental results on the vibration isolation characteristics of an ER fluid damper with different control strategies, obtained using a quarter-car model test rig, are also presented. 相似文献

Synergies between Adjacent Beach-Nourishing Communities in a Morpho-Economic Coupled Coastline Model
Beach “nourishment” consists of placing sand on an eroding beach. The widened beach provides increased storm protection to adjacent structures and improved recreational benefits, but is most often transient, requiring on-going, repeated nourishment episodes. Numerical models of beach nourishment typically address such questions as how long a widened beach will last; economic models compare the benefits and costs of preserving a stretch of beach without regard to its geomorphic evolution. Neither have addressed the physical nor economic interactions between adjacent nourishing communities. Here, we couple a numerical model of coastline evolution and a cost-benefit model of beach nourishment, allowing adjacent communities to make dynamic nourishment decisions. Beach nourishment benefits adjacent communities both “updrift” and “downdrift.” The total amount of money spent on nourishment activities can decrease by as much as 25% when adjacent communities both conduct on-going nourishment projects, as opposed to the case where each community nourishes in isolation. 相似文献

For a long time, a maritime education meant the education of a mariner where technical knowledge of seafaring was taught.
However, shipping has evolved into a global and sophisticated business where two kinds of managers are required: one that
deals with the operation of the vessel and the other that deals with the shore-side business. The education landscape for
shipping has also evolved with time. A mariner’s education has evolved from apprenticeship on a ship to a professional certificate
from maritime academies. The shore-side business is traditionally staffed by master mariners that made the career transition
from sea to shore but the current staffing trend is to employ graduates schooled in business and/or management. It has been
long recognised that shore-side business personnel should ideally be also knowledgeable in vessel operations. Under this scenario,
several maritime degree programmes have cropped up around the world to bridge the knowledge gap of shore-side business personnel.
This paper provides an overview of the evolution of maritime education and selected maritime degree programmes around the
world and proposes a conceptual framework for comparing the programmes. The conceptual framework serves as a guide for evaluating
maritime education and an aid to curriculum design where choices of courses need to be made to fit into a 3-year or 4-year

In this article we use a multi-scale, multi-method historical reconstruction of post– World War II social-ecological interactions within fisheries in Newfoundland and Labrador to explore the dynamics of intensification, expansion, and resource degradation in managed fisheries. Our case study draws on landings statistics, other archival information, and the Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) of fish harvesters to explore these linked dynamics at the macro, meso, and micro levels. By some measures we found large scale trends toward intensification of effort leading to over-harvesting at macro (province wide) levels. At the same time, at the local level (micro-scale) and across sectors and regions (the meso-scale), we found highly fluid fishing practices and a complex suite of stated motivations for change. As a basis for effective governance, an understanding of the dynamics of interactive restructuring in social ecological systems will require multi-scale analyses that are sensitive to this complexity. 相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of misdeclaring container weights, which causes accidents on land and sea, with serious consequences. It reviews the current international law, and the verification of container weight mandated in the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention, and relates them to New Zealand law and practice as an example. It concludes that the SOLAS plan, simply written into local law, is unlikely to be enough by itself to fix the problem. It considers the points in the supply chain where responsibility could be placed for weighing and proposes a “chain of responsibility” approach with initial weighing by the shipper and check weighing later, especially at ports, with misdeclared containers being reportable as incidents. The effect of interactions between individual fronds in a bed of the large intertidal seaweed Durvillaea antarctica, when forced by breaking waves, is studied using a computational model. The model simulates the response of a seaweed bed using a sequence of connected oscillators which are excited by a propagating forcing function representing a breaking ocean wave. Two new facets of the interplay between seaweeds and hydrodynamics are considered: (i) wave forcing due to breaking waves is often not sinusoidal in the rocky intertidal zone and (ii) a frond interaction term is included. The addition of frond interaction reduces the maximum loading on individuals within the bed by around 30% using estimated biomechanical parameters. The rate of change of the loading on the holdfast (equivalent to the “jerk”) is affected in a similar or greater fashion. 相似文献
