This paper moves beyond traditional models of car ownership in that we propose a framework for modeling household-level decisions
to acquire specific types and numbers of mobility tools to fulfill the mobility needs of household members. The framework
is applied to a data set collected during the winter and spring of 2000/2001 in the German city Karlsruhe via an interactive
web-based stated response survey in which respondents could optimize their household mobility tool sets through on-line feedback
concerning the estimated costs of the sets. In our analysis, bivariate ordered probit models are estimated for three combinations
of mobility tools: season tickets (i.e., transit passes) and cars, season tickets and small cars and season tickets and large
cars. In all instances, strong substitution effects are found – that is, as the number of season tickets increases, the number
of cars decreases. This finding underscores the need to move beyond simple models of car ownership to comprehensive models
of mobility tool ownership. As demonstrated by our research, failure to do so is likely to lead to biased results. 相似文献

In this paper, we develop an approach for modeling the daily number of non-work, out-of-home activity episodes for household heads that incorporates in its framework both interactions between such members and activity setting (i.e. independent and joint activities). Trivariate ordered probit models are estimated for the heads of three household types – couple, non-worker; couple, one-worker; and couple, two-worker households – using data from a trip diary survey that was conducted in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) during 1987. Significant interactions between household heads are found. Moreover, the nature of these interactions is shown to vary by household type implying that decision-making structures and, more generally, household dynamics also vary by household type. In terms of predictive ability, the models incorporating interactions are found to predict more accurately than models excluding interactions. The empirical findings emphasize the importance of incorporating interactions between household members in activity-based forecasting models. 相似文献

The increasing popularity of global positioning systems (GPSs) has prompted transportation researchers to develop methods that can automatically extract and classify episodes from GPS data. This paper presents a transferable and efficient method of extracting and classifying activity episodes from GPS data, without additional information. The proposed method, developed using Python®, introduces the use of the multinomial logit (MNL) model in classifying extracted episodes into different types: stop, car, walk, bus, and other (travel) episodes. The proposed method is demonstrated using a GPS dataset from the Space-Time Activity Research project in Halifax, Canada. The GPS data consisted of 5127 person-days (about 47 million points). With input requirements directly derived from GPS data and the efficiency provided by the MNL model, the proposed method looks promising as a transferable and efficient method of extracting activity and travel episodes from GPS data. 相似文献

Examining the relationship between active travel, weather, and the built environment: a multilevel approach using a GPS-enhanced dataset 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study examines how the built environment and weather conditions influence the use of walking as a mode of transport. The Halifax Regional Municipality in Nova Scotia, Canada is the study area for this work. Data are derived from three sources: a socio-demographic questionnaire and a GPS-enhanced prompted recall time-use diary collected between April 2007 and May 2008 as part of the Halifax Space-Time Activity Research project, a daily meteorological summary from Environment Canada, and a comprehensive GIS dataset from the regional municipality. Two binary logit multilevel models are estimated to examine how the propensity to use walking is influenced by the built environment and weather while controlling for socio-demographic characteristics. The built environment is measured via five attributes in one model and a walkability index (derived from the five attributes) in the other. Weather conditions are shown to affect walking use in both models. Although the walkability index is significant, the results demonstrate that this significance is driven by specific attributes of the built environment—in the case of this study, population density and to a lesser extent, pedestrian infrastructure. 相似文献
