The Straits of Malacca and Singapore are an important trade route linking the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea and Pacific Ocean. They are also rich in resources and support a range of activities that benefit the economies of the littoral states (Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore). This important shipping route is a very congested waterway and the authorities are keen to improve navigation facilities to promote ship safety and reduce the risk of groundings, collisions and accidents. This will also help to protect the marine environment from the effects of pollution and hence reduce its damaging impact on activities related to the Straits, e.g. fisheries and tourism. The Marine Electronic Highway (MEH) is an attempt to bring together maritime safety technologies and environmental management systems. The paper examines the costs of providing such a highway and considers some of the benefits which could accrue from its implementation. The analysis, conducted in the form of a cost-benefit study, clearly shows the economic viability of the scheme. 相似文献

The shipping industry in Nigeria since the early 1990s has been experiencing a continuous disastrous downturn. Nigerian shipping companies' participation in international shipping has continued to be very limited. Their presence and impact is hardly felt in the world's shipping industry. Both the national carriers (that is shipping companies with national carrier status) and other indigenous private shipping companies have vessel as well as management problems. These problems have led to the poor performance of the Nigerian shipping industry for over a decade now. The carriers in the industry are not attaining for the country the gains that are supposed to emanate from shipping. Traditional liner carriers, operating in the highly competitive commercial environment of the last few years, have attempted to lower the marginal cost of each box carried. Technological improvements in both construction and propulsion systems have led to a steady growth in carrying capacity. Ships of 600+ TEUs are now in service and, as a result of this trend, have displaced 'smaller' ships from the major east-west trades. The more competitive environment of these trades has in turn led to a redeployment of ships in the 2500+ TEU range to the north-south trades. The result has been a rapid increase in north-south capacity, including feeder services and falling freight rates. Despite the current excess supply in shipping and historically low freight rates, significant developments in technology have created opportunities for new fast containerships. The paper analyses the key economic factors in the differentiation of the new fast ship technology from the traditionally designed containerships and demonstrates the potential financial viability to owners of these new 'greyhounds'. 相似文献

A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is a vehicle that combines a conventional propulsion system with an on-board rechargeable
energy storage system to achieve better fuel economy than a conventional vehicle HEVs do not have limited ranges like battery
electric vehicles, which use batteries charged by an external source. The different propulsion power systems may have common
subsystems or components. The objective of this study is to compare the fuel economies of a conventional step van, a series
hybrid electric step van (HESV), and a parallel HESV by calculating the fuel consumption using the ADVISOR software by NREL.
We also showed the results of the vehicles in different driving cycles including the Central Business District bus cycles,

The concept design phase is a critical step in auto-body design, as it has a great effect on later design work. This paper
describes the implementation of an auto-body structure design in the early stages of a new auto-body developing program. In
order to reduce the long design period and analysis error that plagues traditional auto-body concept design, an intelligent
CAE system has been successfully developed and implemented based on the UGS NX/API opening platform. This system, the so-called
ACD-ICAE (Auto-body concept design-intelligent computer aided engineering) System that means concept design-intelligent computer
aided engineering system, employs a fully parametrized template method to build the conceptual auto-body geometry model and
FEM model quickly and easily. It also integrates auto-body modeling, analysis and optimization on only one CAD platform via
a parametric variables database. Moreover, all parametric variables are shared and updated in different phases of the ACD-ICAE
System. A wizard User Interface (UI) based on knowledge of auto-body engineering was developed and used in this system. The
procedures implementing the functional diagram of the ACD-ICAE system are also provided. A typical example of a car body concept

During the last decade research has been conducted on the dvnamics of the tvre considered as a vehiclecomponent. Asurvey is given of these developments where tyre mass plays an important role. The underlying theoretical considerations concerning the massless tyre have been discussed as well. Two groups of tyre response have been distinguished: the lateral (out-of-plane) response and the vertical/longitudinal (in-plane) response to motions of the wheel. In both categories tyre compliance, slip and inertia have influence. The dynamic properties of the rolling tyre have been presented in the form of transfer functions and/or differential equations. A modified thermostatic control strategy is applied to the powertrain control of a parallel mild hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) to improve fuel economy. This strategy can improve the fuel economy of a parallel mild HEV by operating internal combustion engine (ICE) in a high-efficiency region. Thus, in this study, experiments of a parallel mild HEV were conducted to analyze the characteristics of the hybrid electric powertrain and a numerical model is developed for the vehicle. Based on the results, the thermostatic control strategy was modified and applied to the vehicle model. Also, battery protection logic by using electrochemical battery model is applied because the active usage of battery by thermostatic control strategy can damage the battery. The simulation results of the vehicle under urban driving conditions show that the thermostatic control strategy can improve the vehicle’s fuel economy by 3.7 % compared with that of the conventional strategy. The results also suggest that the trade-off between the fuel economy improvement by efficient ICE operation and the battery life reduction by active battery usage should be carefully investigated when a thermostatic control strategy is applied to a parallel mild HEV. 相似文献
