Using smartphones as a very low-cost tool for road inventories

Road inventories are a key component in the planning of road networks as they allow for efficient management and a better return on the investment. Current techniques for carrying out road inventories are expensive and entail long planning processes and data postprocessing. Furthermore, these inventories are only useful to those parties interested in designing and building road networks. This study presents a new method for create road inventories based on the use of the latest generation cellular phones, also called smartphones. This paper describes the use of several mobile apps developed for this project that were implemented during the different stages of road inventory process. The results indicate that the data processing speed, its low cost, and the ease of implementation from any type of vehicle validate the proposed procedure as an invaluable tool (1) to do inventories of all types of road networks that are not accessible to cars; (2) to manage the routine maintenance of small road networks; and (3) as a basis for future research projects on road design and outline.     

Closed-loop Inventory Routing Problem for returnable transport items

Increasing concerns on supply chain sustainability have given birth to the concept of closed-loop supply chain. Closed-loop supply chains include the return processes besides forward flows to recover the value from the customers or end-users. Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) systems ensure collaborative relationships between a vendor and a set of customers. In such systems, the vendor takes on the responsibility of product deliveries and inventory management at customers. Product deliveries also include reverse flows of returnable transport items. The execution of the VMI policy requires vendor to deal with a Closed-loop Inventory Routing Problem (CIRP) consisting of its own forward and backward routing decisions, and inventory decisions of customers. In CIRP literature, traditional assumptions of disregarding reverse logistic operations, knowing beforehand distribution costs between nodes and customers demand, and managing single product restrict the usage of the proposed models in current food logistics systems. From this point of view, the aim of this research is to enhance the traditional models for the CIRP to make them more useful for the decision makers in closed-loop supply chains. Therefore, we propose a probabilistic mixed-integer linear programming model for the CIRP that accounts for forward and reverse logistics operations, explicit fuel consumption, demand uncertainty and multiple products. A case study on the distribution operations of a soft drink company shows the applicability of the model to a real-life problem. The results suggest that the proposed model can achieve significant savings in total cost and thus offers better support to decision makers.

User perceptions about marine wilderness on Australia's Great Barrier Reef

Wilderness traditionally has been a terrestrial resource designation. This study examined user perceptions related to the existence of wilderness in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP), and raises questions about the efficacy of the GIS based Australian National Wilderness Inventory (ANWI) as a method of inventorying and analyzing wilderness settings in the absence of such perceptions. Three hundred eighty‐three users of the GBRMP were surveyed. Results indicated that over 80% of the respondents believed that wilderness existed in the park, and that it existed both above and below the surface of the water. Characteristics of wilderness related to human presence, natural features, and remoteness were found to be important to marine wilderness. Responses revealed that remoteness (physical distance) from human development may warrant less weight in the designation of marine wilderness than implied as necessary by the ANWI. We discuss implications for selecting areas as wilderness and using the wilderness designation in marine settings.     

Effectiveness of roadside crash countermeasures

In this article, an "intelligent" airline seat inventory control system is developed. Applications of the system are considered for both nonstop flights and flights with stopovers. The system developed is able to recognize a situation characterized by the number of reservations made by individual passenger classes and the number of canceled reservations at a certain moment in time before departure. The system can also make the appropriate decision without knowing the functional relationships in effect between individual variables. As in other intelligent systems, the "intelligent" airline seat inventory control system proposed here is able to generalize, adapt and learn based on new knowledge and new information. The "intelligent" airline seat inventory control system is based on fuzzy logic. The system makes on-line decisions as to whether to accept or reject any passenger request using established fuzzy rules. The "intelligent" system's results are compared with those of the EMSR model for nonstop flights. The results for flights with stopovers are compared with those obtained using integer programming. The final conclusions are very promising.     

基于供应链管理的库存优化分析

对供应链管理库存控制多级问题进行分析,研究了两种多级库存策略,基于成本优化的多级库存策略,基于时间优化的多级库存策略。两种策略反映了库存管理的一般思想,即库存控制的最优化目标不仅是供应链环节中某一个或几个节点企业的库存最优化,而是整个供应链环节有机、协调地一体化库存的最优化。在此基础上提出了基于时间的多级库存成本优化思路。
